Miss Elsbeth Trudinger(Elsie) Edgar RN(b. 1 Sep, 1905; d. 10 Nov 1985)
Tong Yung 1932-3; Chinju 1933-1941)
Born in China to missionary parents, Elsie Edgar grew up in China and attended the China Inland Mission School at Chefoo. After nursing training in Adelaide, Miss Edgar studied at the Deaconess Training Institute in Melbourne for one year. In 1929 she was appointed by the Australian Inland Mission to the hospital at Innaminka. It was drought time. There was no feed for animals and only brackish well water. Difficulties were compounded by a massive outbreak of typhoid fever. Rooms, passages and verandahs were crowded with patients. An extra sister and doctor were brought in to assist.
In early 1930, the PWMU approached her to ask if she would be willing to go to Korea. She replied positively but said that she would not be available till1931, when she had fulfilled her obligations to the Australian Inland Mission. She arrived in Melbourne on 3 October 1930, and arrangements were made for her to go immediately to the Training Institute. Miss Edgar departed for Korea on August 1, 1931.
Like other missionary children, who wanted to follow their parents, she probably took it for granted that she would go to China. But when the strong request to go to Korea was presented to her, she saw this as a call from God. She arrived in Korea on 7 September, 1931. Elsie Edgar’s great contribution to the Mission and Korea over the next decade was as matron of the Paton Memorial Hospital in Chinju where her work included not only all categories of nursing, but also administration and the training of nurses and male orderlies. As well, she had charge of the infant welfare programme. Elsie Edgar was a warm, capable and hard-working person who simply got on with the work at hand. Her work and life always provoked the question, why do you come so far and at such inconvenience and do all this for us?
She returned to Adelaide when most of the missionaries were withdrawn from Korea in 1941. She nursed in Adelaide until she was asked to go to the Paton Memorial Hospital in Port Vila as matron, in 1947. She remained in the New Hebrides until 1972. Her great passion was the training of nurses. In her retirement she served also in two Aboriginal Missions for short periods at the request of the Board of Mission.
Elsie Edgar was a hard-working, totally dependable worker, whose life was dedicated to the service of people in the spirit of Christ.
