Hannah Jean(Janie) Stuckey(née Wightman) (b. 31 January 1912- )
Chinju 1935-1941
Hannah Jean (Janie) Wightman was born in Ballarat, her father being a mining engineer, but the family moved to Melbourne when Janie was five. Her mother died of breast cancer shortly after. Janie was a student at Tintern Girls Grammar School when she met Jim, a handsome boarder at Scotch College. They were both attending a Sunday School picnic. Janie recalled that she was attracted by Jim’s good looks and nice sense of humour. Janie graduated the Kindergarten Training College in Kew. She married Jim Stuckey on 22 December, 1934, and the following year went with him to Chinju. Although Janie would have had little time for anything more than mothering their children-three of them (Edward, Margaret and Elizabeth) born in Chinju-she also took an active part in the life of the Mission, studying the language, carrying the responsibility of station secretary and in their final year also taking on responsibility for the kindergarten. But these years were not the most fulfilling of Janie’s life. Jim and Janie returned to Australia for furlough in September 1940, and were unable to return to Korea
Back in Victoria, Janie was an active member of the PWMU, and was convener for a time of its Aboriginal Mission Auxiliary.
It is said that the welcome mat was always out at the Stuckeys’ home, and the kettle was never far from the boil, whether in Chinju, or in any of the other places where the Stuckeys lived after returning to Australia. Janie remained in Melbourne for the seventeen months during which Jim worked in Korea in 1958-59. Indeed she had to spend many times without her husband throughout their married life, as Jim’s work often took him away from home, particularly during his years as General Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Missions.
