Why Trinity?
The Christian doctrine of the Trinity is often perceived as a problem. Many people do not understand or appreciate its relevance while others such as Muslim people reject it. Yet it is an important doctrine so I will seek to offer some thoughts that I hope will be helpful.
The first thing to note is that when speaking about God there is always mystery. God is always beyond our human capacity to understand. It is appropriate to acknowledge this and admit that there is mystery surrounding God. In the Old Testament God is awesome and above human comprehension. The Israelite people were told not to depict God in any way for this could lead to false worship. They were to acknowledge God and not mistakenly worship anything but the Lord their God who brought them out of bondage in Egypt and gave them the ten commandments through Moses.
Though God is mysterious, God chose to be in a special relationship with the Israelite people. To them he sent his Word via prophets and his Spirit was evident in particular people as well as in all creation. The transcendent God, the God above us, was also the immanent God, coming to people and in the world through God’s Word and Spirit. Already in the Old Testament we have a threefold relationship of God with people and the world. God is the awesome God above us and God is present in creation and in people through God’s Word and Spirit.
God is not just to be acknowledged as the Creator and Lord of all. God wants people to live well and so sent prophets to speak God’s Word, often of judgment for not living according to the commandments and not showing God’s justice and compassion to people. God provided commandments and prophetic people to show God’s will for how to live in particular situations. God’s Spirit is at work in the world and in certain people. The prophets were conscious of not speaking in their own right but speaking God’s Word for God’s Spirit was upon them.
When we come to the New Testament, John’s gospel declares that “the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). The other gospels speak of Jesus being full of the Spirit. Because of this Jesus spoke and acted for God in definitive ways. Through the Spirit he healed people and brought them wholeness of body and mind. His ministry of proclaiming the kingdom of God was led by the Spirit.
Following Jesus’ death and resurrection, the first followers of Jesus came to speak of Jesus as Lord in the same way that they spoke of God, for he was held to be “at the right hand of the Father.” This led to intense debates among leading thinkers as to how best to understand the relationship between God the Father and Jesus the Son. The outcome was the Nicene Council and Creed which declared Jesus to be one with God, God from God, Light from Light. This was not easily arrived at. Nevertheless, it represents an important truth namely that in Jesus we see God. This does not take away the mystery of God but if we want best to understand God then we are to look to Jesus. In Jesus the Son we see God the Father. God is of course above gender.
In terms of how we are to live, Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount gives challenging teaching. (Matthew 5-7). The Lord’s Prayer is our model prayer. He gave us a summary of the commandments saying we are to love God wholeheartedly and love our neighbour as ourselves. Jesus called people to seek the kingdom of God and live by it. In his life and parables, we get an idea of the nature of the reign of God.
If Jesus was one with God, how do we understand the Spirit? Is the Spirit less than God just as some earlier had said that Jesus was less than God? The clear implication was that the Spirit was God’s Spirit and therefore one with God also. Leading thinkers in the early church grappled with how to express this. Augustine in the West and the Cappadocian thinkers in the East came to use language that was accepted and led to understanding God as triune. God was not a simple unity but an organic unity of Father, Son and Spirit. Some recent theologians have emphasized the unity of God coming to us in different modes while others have stressed that God is like a community. God is still one but we need to hold to the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son and the divinity of God’s Spirit. Hence, we need to expand our understanding of the mystery of God and affirm the Trinity.
As mentioned earlier God is not just to be acknowledged as the Creator and Ruler of all. God wants to be in relation with people and to have them live well. While humans have repeatedly gone against God’s ways, God desires to bring about reconciliation and renewal, not just for humans but for all creation. Jesus came to reconcile us to God and show us the way of God’s reign. The Spirit can bring renewal and guidance. God, the mysterious God above us, came among us in Jesus and continues to be with us through the Spirit. If we look to Jesus and are open to the Spirit, we can experience reconciliation and renewal in our lives.
In the life of the Christian Church, we baptise people “in the name of the Father, and of Son and of Holy Spirit.” We typically bless people using trinitarian words such as, “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” The Christian faith is trinitarian.
