명곡감상
바로크 음악을 대표하는 일명 ‘음악의 어머니’ 게오르크 프리드리히 헨델 / 조지 프레드릭 핸델 (George Frideric Handel, 1685 ~ 1759)의 오라토리오 ‘에스더’ (Esther)
게오르크 프리드리히 헨델 / 조지 프레드릭 헨델 (George Frideric Handel, 독: Georg Friedrich Händel, 1685년 2월 23일 ~ 1759년 4월 14일)은 독일에서 태어나 영국에서 활동한 바로크 시대의 작곡가이다.
헨델은 46곡의 오페라와 우수한 오라토리오를 비롯하여 오케스트라, 바이올린, 쳄발로, 오르간 분야에 이르기까지 많은 작품을 남겼다. 그의 음악은 명쾌하고 호탕하며 신선하여 생생한 리듬에 성악적이라고 평가된다.
독실한 개신교 (루터교) 신자인 헨델의 대표적인 교회음악은 ‘메시아’ (Messiah)로서 당시 영어 번역 성경인 킹 제임스 성경의 구절에 곡을 붙인 오라토리오이다.

구약성경의 에스더서를 바탕으로 하고 있는 작품으로, 아하수에로의 아리아 ‘오 아리따운 왕비여 그대의 눈을 들라’는 아하수에로 왕이 아름다운 에스더에게 은혜를 베푸는 장면을 노래한 명곡이다.
에스더는 아하수에로의 오른팔이었던 신하 하만의 음모를 듣게 된다. 자신의 민족 이스라엘을 몰살시키려는 계획이었다.
에스더는 왕에게 말할 기회를 얻기 위해 왕 앞에 나간다.
하지만 당시 페르시아 왕궁의 법도에 의하면 왕비는 왕이 부르기 전에 먼저 왕 앞에 나갈 수가 없었다.
에스더는 자기 민족을 위해 용기를 냈고 아하수에로 왕은 에스더의 아름다움에 탄복하며 잔치를 열겠다는 에스더의 청을 들어준다.

Produced in collaboration with Bach Society Houston as part of the 2018 Houston Early Music Festival, this program comprises two concise music dramas from opposite ends of the 18th century: G. F. Handel’s Esther (1718) and Samuel Felsted’s Jonah (1775). With gorgeous arias and stirring choruses, Handel’s first English-language oratorio celebrates an Old Testament heroine’s ultimate victory over the forces of evil. Such works provided valuable models for Samuel Felsted, a composer born to an English family in Jamaica in the early 1740s. His concise setting of the story of Jonah and the whale is the first American oratorio.
