A thought-provoking history of the Scottish-Australian missionary James Noble Mackenzie’s ministry in Korea. Mackenzie served the most marginalized, needy people for 28 years during the Japanese occupation from 1910-1945 … he served the rural poor who were the main target of exploitation by the invaders, and he established churches in various areas…. He also ministered to lepers who were the poorest people. Surprisingly, Mackenzie was friendly to the Japanese imperialists who caused the nation great suffering and who opposed the spread of Christian faith…. Mackenzie advocated that missionaries compromise on the issue, thus violating the second commandment, and this made him the subject of conflict for a long time in the Australian mission in Korea. Despite his dedicated service to marginalized people his compromise created difficulty in evaluating him as an evangelist.
