시드니 하늘을 가르는 아찔한 고공 줄타기!

김대균 명인, ‘맨리 콜소’(4월 1일)와 ‘달링하버’(4월 2일)에서 줄타기 공연

유네스코(UNESCO, 유엔 교육과학문화기구)가 지정한 인류무형문화유산인 한국 전통 ‘줄타기’ 공연이 호주 시드니에서 펼쳐진다. 주시드니한국문화원(원장 안신영, 이하 ‘한국문화원’)은 4월 1일(금) 맨리(Manly) 콜소(The Corso)와 4월 2일(토) 달링하버(Darling Harbour) 내 텀발롱 파크(Tumbalong Park)에서 열리는 ‘시드니한민족축제’(Sydney Korean Festival)에 한국줄타기보존회와 김대균 줄타기 명인을 초청하여 한국 전통 마당놀이의 꽃 ‘줄타기’ 공연을 선보일 예정이라고 밝혔다. 올해 시드니한민족축제를 찾는 방문객들은 1,300여년 간 긴 세월의 맥을 이어온 한국의 전통 줄타기 공연을 통해 한국의 고유하고 특색 있는 문화를 만날 수 있다.

한국의 ‘줄타기’는 전 세계에 다양한 형태로 존재하는 단순한 곡예 수준의 줄타기가 아니라, 줄광대, 어릿광대, 삼현육각이 펼치는 춤과 노래, 재담이 어우러진 종합예술로서, 지난 1976년 중요무형문화재 제58호로 지정됐다. 옛 민초들의 삶의 애환을 달래주던 ‘줄타기’는 해학과 풍자가 넘칠 뿐만 아니라 관객과도 호흡하는 매력을 지니고 있다. 유네스코는 한국 전통 ‘줄타기’의 이러한 문화적 가치를 인정하여 지난 2011년에 줄타기를 유네스코 인류무형문화유산에 등재했고, 이제 한국의 ‘줄타기’는 인류가 함께 지켜나가야 할 자랑스러운 문화유산이 되었다. 김대균 명인은 1976년에 줄타기에 입문해 40년 세월을 줄 위에서 보낸 전문가로서, 2000년 한국인 최연소 줄타기 인간문화재로 인정된 한국 최고의 명인이다.

한국문화원은 이번 줄타기 공연을 통해 호주 현지인들이 한국 전통문화의 새로운 측면과 매력을 경험할 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔다. 또한 한국문화원은 전통 줄타기의 최고 전문가인 김대균 명인의 공연을 통해 교민들도 옛 추억과 향수를 느낄 수 있을 것이라고 언급했다.

김대균 명인의 ‘줄타기’ 공연은 맨리 콜소에서 4월 1일 오후 3시와 달링하버 텀발롱 파크에서 4월 2일 오전 11시 30분과 오후 3시에 총 2회 진행되며, 코리안 페스티발을 찾는 모두가 입장료 없이 관람할 수 있다.

‘Jultagi: Tight-rope performance’ leaps into Sydney

A Korean traditional performance recognised by UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural) as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity will have two special showings for Sydney siders at the start of April.

Jultagi, the exhilarating Korean tight-rope walking performance will be presented at The Corso, Manly on April 1st at 3:00pm and Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour in April 2nd at 11:30am and 3:00pm

Presented by the Korean Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Committee for the Preservation of Tight-rope Walking, the performance will feature the living Korean tight-rope legend Kim, Dae Gyun as he makes his way down-under to stun both Australians and Koreans alike. The master spent 40 years on the tightrope until being accredited as the leading skill holder in Korea being registered as Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No.58 in the year 2000. He then went on to becoming the top contributor in registering the performance as a UNESCO heritage in 2011. The performance on the 1st and 2nd of April will show case 46 different tight rope techniques from them aster himself.

Jultagi is differentiated from popular Australian extreme sport, slacklining, which has similar jumping and walking skills. Jultagi is South Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 58 and has been passed down over 1,300 years. It is a distinctive form of tightrope walking that is accompanied by music and witty dialogue between the tightrope walker and an earthbound jester. The tightrope walker executes a variety of acrobatic feats along with jokes, mimicry, songs and dance, while the jester engages the tightrope walker and the audience in humorous banter to create a dynamic mood of the performance. During the performance musicians play traditional Korean instruments to accompany the jester and the walker which makes Jultagi, an all-encompassing cultural experience which engages audiences through acrobatic feats, humorous story-telling and exhilarating music performances.

Ever since he first stepped onto the tightrope at the age of eight, Kim, Dae Gyun has dedicated himself to mastering song, acrobatic and mimicry until he was finally accredited as the best skill holder of Jultagi in Korea. He currently passes down this skill to many pupils who look forward to carrying on the cultural heritage for future generations.

The ‘Jultagi’ demonstration will be a rare opportunity and will be a performance for all backgrounds and nationalities to enjoy. English translation will be offered, and is a free performance open to all ages.
