Dear friends of Korea,
The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sydney would like to present to you our 2020 National Day Video Address. Korean National Day (or Gae-cheon-jeol, meaning ‘Sky Opening Day’ in Korean) is celebrated on October 3rd every year. It refers to the moment 4353 years ago, when the mythical Dan-gun laid the foundations for the first Korean state.
2020 represents an important year in the bilateral relations between Korea and Australia in many ways. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War (which we have also made a video to commemorate and is provided in the link below) where Australians came to Korea’s side in the fight for freedom, serving as one of the main pillars of the Australia-Korea relationship. Next year will also mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Australia and will be an opportunity for us to further elevate our bilateral ties.
This year, unlike any other, has changed much of the rhythm of our day to day lives. Given the circumstances we find ourselves in, the Consulate General has endeavored to find alternate means to celebrate important events, and Gae-cheon-jeol is no exception.
Below is a link that will direct you to a special video message from Consul General Sangwoo Hong to bring the celebration of Gae-cheon-jeol to you during these difficult times. This special Korean National Day Video Address is a way for us at the Consulate General to connect with all of you in the absence of our annual tradition of hosting this event together.
We are also very pleased to have the NSW Premier, The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, MP, who has provided a short video message to join us in celebrating Korean National Day. We deeply appreciate her ongoing efforts in supporting the Korean community in NSW as well as her long running presence at Korean community events.
We hope that we might be able to celebrate in person next year, but for now, happy Gae-cheon-jeol!
