조지프 러디어드 키플링 (Joseph Rudyard Kipling, 1865년 12월 30일 ~ 1936년 1월 18일)은 영국의 소설가이자 시인이다. 인도의 봄베이에서 태어났으며, 《정글북》 등의 동화작가로 알려져 있다.
키플링은 1865년 인도 봄베이에서 태어났다. 다종의 문화에 제국주의 서구의 문화가 조화롭게 어우러진 19세기 말 인도에서의 경험을 바탕으로 그는 일생 동안 시와 소설, 동화, 민요 모음집 등을 꾸준히 발표하여 400편에 가까운 단편소설과 시를 남겼다.
기자로 인도 전역을 다니며 원시적 장엄함이 살아 있는 드넓은 자연 풍경, 북인도 무슬림 다문화 사회 생활상 등을 관찰하여 글을 쓴 그는 불과 23세에 첫 단편집 『언덕으로부터의 평범한 이야기들』을 출간했다. 기존의 영국과 유럽 문학에서는 볼 수 없던 완전히 색다른 그의 작품은 평단의 관심을 받음과 동시에 대중적인 인기를 얻어 책을 잘 읽지 않는 군인들에게까지 큰 호응을 받는다. 또 아이들을 위한 이야기들을 모아 『정글북』, 『킴』을 출간하여 전 세계적으로 큰 사랑을 받은 그는 시인으로서도 탁월했다. 테니슨의 서거 후 그 뒤를 잇는 계관 시인으로 영국 왕실로부터 여러 번 제안받았으나 거절했다. 1차 세계대전을 거치며 아들을 잃은 키플링은 내면세계로 눈을 돌려 점점 과감한 생략과 함축적인 표현으로 초자연적이고 신비한 내용을 담은 작품들을 발표했다.
단어의 질감을 살린 풍성한 언어와 완벽한 은유로 문학에 ‘혁신’을 가져왔다는 평가와 함께 그는 전쟁, 사랑, 고통, 상실, 유령, 공상과학 등의 다양한 소재로 인간의 보편적인 모습을 심오하게 통찰했다. T. S. 엘리엇, 어니스트 헤밍웨이, 서머싯 몸, 조지 오웰, 헨리 제임스, 호르헤 루이스 보르헤스, 에드먼드 윌슨, 랜들 자렐, 킹즐리 에이미스 등 수많은 작가들은 키플링을 ‘20세기 영국의 가장 위대한 단편소설 작가’라고 찬사를 보냈다.

1907년 스웨덴 한림원은 “이 세계적으로 유명한 작가의 관찰력과 독창적인 상상력, 힘이 넘치는 아이디어, 이야기를 이끄는 뛰어난 재능을 높이 사” 키플링에게 영미권 최초로 노벨문학상을 수여한다.
당시 42세였던 키플링은 역대 최연소 수상자로, 1901년 노벨문학상이 제정된 이후 이 기록은 아직까지도 깨어지지 않고 있다.
○ 생애 및 활동
영국에서 노스데본의 유나이티드서비스 대학교를 마치고, 1880년 인도로 돌아와서, 1882~1889년 라호르의 의 편집원을 지냈다. 그는 인도의 영국 군인의 시와 이야기로 잘 기억되고 있고, 또한 어린 아이들을 위한 이야기들로도 유명하다. 그는 《정글북》뿐만 아니라 1902년 작 저스트 소 스토리스, 1901년 작 킴, 1888년 작 왕이 되려던 사나이를 포함한 많은 소설들과 1890년 작 <만달레이 : Mandalay>, 1890년 작 <군가 딘> 등의 시를 발표했다. 그 동안의 시집 <부문별 노래 : Departmental Dittles> (1886), 단편 소설집 <산중야화 : Plain Tales from the Hills> (1887) 등을 발표하고, 극동, 미국 등을 여행 (1887 ~ 1889)후에 1890년도에 영국으로 귀국하였다. 제재를 인도의 해양, 정글 야수 등에서 취하여, (1891)을 비롯한 많은 단편소설을 발표하였다. 한편 시인으로는 인도의 군대 생활을 그린 <병영의 노래> (1892)로 인해 그 용장함을 환영받았으며 <7대양 : The Seven Seas> (1896)이 당시 대영제국에 호응하였기 때문에 애국시인으로 추앙받기도 했다. 러디어드 키플의 시 중에 <만약에 : If>는 1910년 어느 날, 자신의 12살이 된 아들을 위해 아버지로서의 자신의 바람을 적은 것이다.
그는 미술의 짧은 스토리의 주요한 개척자로 여겨지고 있다. 그가 지은 아이들을 위한 책들은 아동 문학이라는 분야에서 알려지고 있고, 그의 명작들은 다재다능하고 빛나는 선물들로 전시되어 있다. 키플링은 잉글랜드에서 가장 유명한 작가들 중 한 명이었다. 운문과 산문, 두 분야에 있어서 인정을 받았다. 19세기 말과 20세기 초반, 헨리 제임스는 말했다. “키플링은 개인적으로 내가 알아온 사람들 중에서 가장 완벽한 천재의 모습으로 다가온다.” 이 표현은 그냥 똑똑한 것보다 더 독특함을 말하는 것이다. 1907년, 영어권 작가로는 처음으로 노벨 문학상을 수상했다. 지금까지도 그는 가장 어린 수상자로 남아있다.
하지만 시간이 갈수록 그의 명성은 변화를 겪었다. 그 당시의 정치적, 사회적 분위기에 따른 것이었는데, 그런 상황에서 대조적이게 된 그에 대한 사람들의 생각들은 20세기에 계속 이어져 왔다. 조지 오웰은 그를 “영국 제국주의의 선지자”라고 불렀다. 문학 비평가인 더글라스 커는 “그 [키플링]는 여전히 열성적인 반대를 감동시킬 수 있는 작가이고, 그의 문학적, 문화적 위치는 이미 정해져 있는 것과는 다르다. 하지만 유럽 제국들이 점차 사라지면서, 그는 다시 한 번 비교 불가한 작가라는 것으로 각인되고 있다. 그의 특별한 서술과 선물은 그 자신을 다시 인정받도록 하는데 에 기여하고 있다.” 라고 썼다.
○ 저작
키플링의 걸작『정글북 1』(1894년), 『정글북 2』(1895년)이 성공하고 이어 1901년 『킴』, 1902년 『바로 그런 이야기들』이 차례로 완성되었다.
그가 잇달아 집필한 단편들, 『피조물의 다양성』(1917), 『차변과 대변』(1926) 그리고 『한계와 재활』(1932)은 최근에야 그 우수성을 인정받게 되었다.
키플링은 계관 시인의 영예를 안는 것을 거절했지만, 1907년 노벨상을 수상한 최초의 영국인 작가가 되었다. 1936년 사망했고 자서전 격인 미완성 유고 『나에 관한 어떤 점』은 그다음 해에 출간되었다.
