천문학적 용어인 ‘가스 행성 (Gas Giant)’이라는 단어를 최초로 만든 인물로도 잘 알려져 있다.

제임스 블리시 (James Benjamin Blish, 1921년 5월 23일 ~ 1975년 7월 30일)는 1921년 5월 23일, 미국 뉴저지 이스트오렌지에서 출생했다.
1942년 microbiology에서 학사를 받았다.
세계 2차 대전이 터지자 블리시는 졸업 후 참전하여 1944년까지 medical technician으로 종군하였다.
전쟁 후 콜롬비아 대학에서 2년 있었는데, 이 시기에 Futurians에 가입했다.
그의 아내이자 에이전트인 Virginia Kidd도 Futurian의 멤버였었다.
학업을 끝낸 뒤 블리시는 문학계에 뛰어들었으나 시간이 나면 언제든지 SF의 나래를 펼쳤다고 한다.
블리시는 1968년 영국으로 이주했으며, 스타트랙 11 서문에 그의 주소를 영국으로 쓰기 시작했다.
말년에 그는 스타트렉 사가의 각본과 단편 모두에 있어서 중심 작가였었다.
그의 다른 취미는 고양이, 음악 콘서트, 아마추어 연극, 비행이었다.
1975년 7월 30일, 영국 헨리온템스에서 별세했다.
