○ 생애 및 활동

오리아나 팔라치는 1929년 6월 29일 이탈리아 피렌체에서 태어났다.

피렌체의 가구공인 오리아나 팔라치의 아버지 에도아르도 팔라치는 이탈리아 파시스트의 지도자 베니토 무솔리니의 독재를 끝내려 노력했던 정치운동가였다.

제2차세계대전동안, 팔라치는 어린데도 이탈리아 반파시스트 레지스탕스 운동 레시스텐차의 일부인 주스티치아 에 리베르타에 참여했다.

나중에 오리아나 팔라치는 이탈리아 군대에게서 용감하다는 증서를 받았다.

어린 시절 부모를 따라 무솔리니의 파시스트 독재정권에 항거하는 레지스탕스 운동에 참여했고, 이를 통해 깨달은 인간의 자유와 존엄성의 가치를 평생의 신념으로 삼았다.

팔라치는 열여섯 살에 돈을 벌기 위해 피렌체 지역 신문사의 문을 두드렸다.

기자라는 직업을 선택한 데에는 언론인이었던 브루노 삼촌의 영향이 컸다.

그는 삼촌의 권유로 종군기자에 지원했고, 이탈리아의 권위 있는 주간지 「레우로페오」 특파원으로 1967년 베트남 전쟁에 갔다.

이후 멕시코 반정부 시위, 중동 전쟁, 아프가니스탄 내전, 방글라데시 전쟁, 걸프전 등에서 종군기자로 활약했다.

전쟁의 참상을 폭로하며 인간의 잔인함과 어리석음을 증언한 기사는 세계인의 많은 공감을 얻었다.

‘팔라치 스타일’이라는 말이 있을 정도로 유명한 인터뷰 기자로서의 경력은 1954년 피렌체를 떠나 로마로 향하면서 시작됐다.

팔라치는 로마와 밀라노, 뉴욕에 머물며 할리우드 스타들과 영화계 인사들을 취재했으며, 상대의 본질을 꿰뚫는 듯한 능숙한 인터뷰 역량을 드러냈다.

이후 그의 인터뷰 상대는 달라이 라마, 야세르 아라파트, 헨리 키신저, 덩샤오핑, 아야톨라 호메이니 등 20세기의 가장 영향력 있는 인물들로 확대되었고 거기서 나온 여러 에피소드는 큰 화제가 되었다.

팔라치는 작가로서도 세계적인 성공을 거두었다.

취재 경험에서 나온 르포르타주와 자전적인 내용의 소설을 주로 썼다.
