기술을 무엇보다 신봉하는 현대 문명에 대해 의문을 던지는 많은 글을 냈다.

베리는 미국의 시골인 켄터키 중에서도 시골에서 태어나 켄터키대학교에서 영문학을 공부하고 몇 대학에서 영어를 가르치기도 했지만, 1965년부터 농사를 지으며 수많은 시와 소설, 수필을 썼다. 그의 글은 모두 자신의 작업은 자신이 사는 곳에 뿌리를 두고 그곳에 대한 반응으로 나온다는 신념에 근거해 자신이 사는 시골의 모습과 그곳의 삶을 그대로 보여주기에 감동이다. 그의 글은 그의 삶이다. 책상 위에서 컴퓨터로 찍어낸 글이 아니라 농토 위에서 농사꾼의 흙 묻은 손으로 땅을 갈듯 쓴 글이다. 대단한 권위라도 있는 듯 보이는 남의 나라 책이나 보고 옮긴 남의 글이 아니라, 자신의 땀방울과 숨길로 한마디 한마디를 엮은 글이어서 농사란 흙에 대한 헌신과 상상력에 의존하는 실용예술이라고 하는 그의 믿음을 확신시켜준다.

- 완전 자급자족의 ‘마지막 농부’
그가 30대 초반부터 살아온 산골짜기 고향, 미국의 마지막 시골 같은 동네 주민은 100명이 조금 넘어 우리 동네와 비슷하지만, 미국의 시골이 다 그렇듯이 그 동네 넓이는 우리네의 작은 군 정도이고 이웃집이 눈에 가물거릴 정도이니 비교하기 어렵다. 그래도 그곳 사람들은 서로를 잘 알고 각자의 집에서 키우는 말과 노새와 젖소와 개들까지도 다 안다. 우리 식으로 말하자면 숟가락 밥그릇 숫자까지 다 아는 셈이다. 그곳에는 상점이 하나뿐이지만 교회는 둘이다. 베리는 침례교회에 다니지만, 기독교가 환경과 평화의 파괴에 도전하지 않는 점을 줄곧 비판했다. 또 1960년대 말부터 베트남전쟁 반대를 비롯하여 원자력발전소나 화력발전소 건설에 반대하는 비폭력 불복종운동, 정부의 농정이나 사형제도 등을 비판하는 활동을 줄기차게 해왔지만 어떤 조직에도 관여하지는 않았다.
동네 사람들 중에는 오랫동안 정착한 사람들이 아니라 뜨내기가 많아 문제인 점은 우리와 비슷하지만, 우리네 뜨내기는 대부분 농사를 짓지 않는 도시생활족인 점에서 다르다. 베리는 우리가 책임감을 가지고 살려고 하면 동네의 하천이 어디에서 흘러오고 쓰레기가 어디로 가는지에 대해 금세 답할 수 있어야 한다고 말하는데 우리 시골에는 그런 사람들이 거의 없다. 대대로 살아온 노인들도 잘 모른다. 도시인들은 두말할 필요도 없다. 베리 식으로 말하면 우리는 모두 자기가 사는 땅에 대한 책임감이 없다. 땅값을 최대한 올리려는 점에서 책임을 진다고 할 수 있을까? 그밖에는 땅에 대한 관심이 없다. 사실 땅 위에 세운 집도 거의 없다. 도시는 물론 시골까지 점령한 아파트는 땅의 집이 아니다. 땅 위에서 걷는 사람도 거의 없다. 차로 움직일 뿐이다. 몇 걸음 걸어도 아스팔트나 시멘트 위에서다.
베리는 자신을 소농이라고 하며 소농을 옹호하는 책을 쓰지만 그가 말하는 소농은 15만평 농장으로, 우리의 소농과는 규모가 다르다. 한국에서 소농이란 그 100분의 1 미만의 땅을 경작하는 농가로 전체 농가의 3분의 1 정도다. 반면 미국에서 소농이란 연간수입이 25만달러 이하인 가족농을 말하는데 이는 우리 돈으로 3억원 정도이고, 월수입으로는 2500만원 정도다. 수입으로 따져도 한국의 소농과는 큰 차이가 있다. 베리가 소농을 민주주의의 기본이라고 함은 그런 미국의 소농 전통에 근거한 것이다. 게다가 미국의 식량자급률은 100%를 훨씬 넘는 반면 우리는 50%도 안 된다.
베리가 가족의 먹거리를 모두 직접 생산하고 그것으로 음식을 만들어 먹는 점도 우리와 다르다면 다르다. 곡물과 채소는 물론 돼지와 닭, 소와 양을 키워 먹거리를 완전히 자급자족하는 점에서 우리와 다르다. 나무로 만든 그의 집은 그가 숲에서 주워 온 나무로 난방을 하는 점도 다르다. 집에는 전기가 들어오지만 전력을 이용한 난방시설은 없다. 컴퓨터는 없고 시디(CD)플레이어만 있다. 전력산업에 대항해 60년이나 된 타자기를 사용해 낮에만 글을 쓴다. 그의 생활은 우리네 시골생활과 많이 다르다.
미국의 농촌에서도 그처럼 사는 사람들은 흔하지 않다. 그래서 나는 그를 미국의 마지막 농부라고 부른다. 그 자신 ‘미친 농부’라고 하고 자신의 삶을 ‘해방 전선’이라고 한다. 그가 해방하려고 하는 것은 도시의 물질, 이익, 소비, 광고, 허위, 무엇보다도 그 모든 것을 낳는 자본과 권력이다. 그래서 그는 도시를 떠나 시골에 산다. 그곳에서 대가 없이 일하고, 가난해지고, 사랑받을 자격이 없는 누군가를 사랑하라고 한다. 그러나 나에게 울림이 가장 큰 그의 말은 책임에 대한 것이다. 그는 우리가 책임있게 먹어야 하는 이유는 자유롭게 살기 위해서라고 한다. 나는 그 말을 내가 키운 채소를 처음 먹었을 때 비로소 이해했다. 내가 굳은 땅을 파서 씨앗을 심고 잡초를 캐내면서 땀 흘려 키운 채소를 처음 먹었을 때 만끽한 것은 자유였다. 그러나 그 자유마저도 이제는 문제다. 베리의 외침은 미국에서도 외로운 것이지만 이 땅에서는 더욱 외롭다. 사실 미국은 식량주권의 문제는 없고 대량 기계식 생산이나 유전자 조작 농법 등이 문제이지만, 그것도 우리와 비교하면 문제가 안 될 정도다. 코로나19 이후 귀농하는 사람이 많아질 것으로 예상했지만 며칠 전에 수도권 인구가 비수도권 인구를 능가했다는 슬픈 소식만 들린다.

- ‘과일 기계’ 늘어선 우리네 농촌
이십여년 전 나의 귀농은 참회였고 부활이었으며 재생이었다. 그러나 몇년 못 가 논밭을 아파트니 창고니 폐차장이니 쓰레기소각장이니 축사 따위가 덮어버려 다시 이사를 가려고 했지만 주변에 그렇게 변하지 않은 곳은 거의 없어 그대로 눌러앉았다. 그런 건물들 틈새에 논밭이 조금 남아 있어도 비닐로 덮여 흙 내음을 맡기 어렵다. 유기농이라는 것도 하늘을 막은 비닐 속에서 온갖 유기약품을 이용해 공장식으로 생산되고, 과일나무도 최대 생산을 목표로 변조된 과일 기계처럼 도열해 있다. 하루 종일 사람은 거의 못 보고 차들만 요란하다. 베리는 그런 농사는 농사가 아니라고 하지만 농사로 먹고살려면 그렇게 할 수밖에 없다고들 한다.
베리가 말하는 전통적인 방법 그대로 땅을 파고 씨앗을 뿌리며, 닭과 개와 함께 하루를 보내며 죽을 때까지 그렇게 살아야 한다고 매일 다짐하지만 귀농을 하려는 젊은이들에게 그렇게 권할 생각은 없다. 이십여년 농사로 남은 것은 자전거를 타기는커녕 한 발자국도 걷지 못할 정도로 아픈 다리뿐이기 때문이다. _ 글: 박홍규 “웬들 베리 (1934~)”
