1928년 시카고에서 태어나 캘리포니아에서 일생을 보냈다.

태어날 때 미숙아였고, 쌍둥이 누이는 갓난아이일 때 사망하였다.

불안한 유년 시절을 보낸 그는 성인이 된 후에도 안전강박증에 시달렸고, 마약에 중독되고 결혼과 이혼을 다섯 번이나 경험하는 등 불안한 삶을 살았다.

1952년에 전업 작가로서의 삶을 시작하여 36편의 장편소설과 100편 이상의 단편소설을 발표했다. 하지만 딕은 평생을 생활고에 시달렸고, 죽기 몇 년 전에야 제대로 평가받기 시작했다.

1982년 『안드로이드는 전기양의 꿈을 꾸는가?』가 리들리 스콧 감독에 의해 <블레이드 러너>로 영화화되었으나 완성을 보지 못하고 뇌졸중으로 쓰러졌고, 결국 그해 심장마비로 세상을 떠났다.

표면적으로는 외계인의 침략이라든지 초능력 따위의 통속적인 B급 SF의 소도구들을 구사해서 구축되는 그의 작품 세계의 이면에는 정체성의 혼란, 가상현실, 시뮬라크르, 약물에 의한 의식의 변용, 기억의 혼란, 불안감, 편집증, 음모론, 거대 기업, 전체주의가 횡행하는 20세기 특유의 디스토피아가 자리잡고 있다.

영웅이라기보다는 소시민에 가까운 딕의 주인공들은 존재론적인 고뇌에 빠져 현실의 다중화를 경험하며, 이런 경험은 곧잘 현실 자체의 붕괴로 이어진다.

디키언 (dickian) 이라고 형용되는 이런 작풍은 현대 SF 문학과 영화에서 하나의 큰 소재적 흐름으로 자리 잡았다.
