전설적인 백인 재즈 보컬리스트 중 하나인 페기 리를 발굴하여 데뷔시켰다.
특히 후에 전설적인 3대 재즈보컬이 될 빌리 홀리데이가 스타로 성장하는데 도움을 주었다.
○ 생애 및 활동
1909년 5월 30일 시카고에서 태어났다.
유대계 미국인 집안의 가난한 양복점 자제로 자란 그는 12세 시절이던 1921년에 클라리네티스트 데뷔하였다.
1927년에 벤 폴라크 악단을 시초로 많은 악단과 스튜디오 악단에서 일을 하였으며, 취입에도 활동이 많았다.
1934년에 스스로 악단을 결성하여 라디오 쇼의 레츠 댄스로 큰 반향을 부른 이래 그의 연주스타일은 미국 전역에 알려져 ‘스윙의 왕’이라고 불리기도 하였다. 그 후 스윙은 재즈 사상 큰 발전을 이룩하게 되었다.
한편, 그의 충실한 악단은 많은 스타 플레이어를 확보하고 그 뛰어난 픽업 멤버의 소편성 콤보도 고도한 연주로 호평을 받았다.
그의 비범한 재능은 고전적 분야에도 미쳐 많은 클라리넷 작품을 연주하였다.
이 밖에 영화에도 많이 출연하였으며, 그의 전기를 다룬 영화도 만들어졌다.
그러나, 그는 1950년대부터 이어지고 있는 새로운 재즈의 흐름에서 멀어지게 되었다.
그럼에도 베니 굿맨은 여러 연주자들과 흥겨운 스윙재즈를 해서 그런지 아주 장수한 연주자다.
또한 죽을 때까지 대중들에게 사랑을 받으며 1986년 6월 13일 별세한다.

1920년 베니 굿맨이 활동하던 시절은 미국의 금주령, 마피아의 활동, 미국 대공황 시대였다.
당연히 미국인 대부분이 가난하게 살고 있을 때 베니 굿맨은 사람들에게 즐거운 음악, 춤을 출수 있는 음악, 흥겨운 음악들을 작곡을 하였다.
1934년 스스로 악단을 결성을 하여 라디오쇼로 출연을 하며 스윙의 왕으로 불렸다.
그 이후 1938년에 미국 카네기 홀에서 자신의 음악으로 정점을 완성시키면서 백인의 재즈를 한다는 것에 틀을 깨준 사람이다.

Goodman’s star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Goodman was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
After winning polls as best jazz clarinetist, Goodman was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1957.
He was a member of the radio division of the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
His papers were donated to Yale University after his death.[6] He received honorary doctorates from Union College, the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Bard College, Brandeis University, Columbia University, Harvard University, and Yale University.
