2015년 4월 20일, 오스트리아 태생 미국의 소설가로 ‘황태자의 마지막 키스’의 저자 프레더릭 모턴 (Frederic Morton, 1924 ~ 2015) 별세
프레더릭 모턴 (Frederic Morton, 1924년 10월 5일 ~ 2015년 4월 20일)은 1924년 오스트리아 비엔나에서 유대인으로 태어났다.
15살 때 영국 런던의 소호 지구에서 빵집 도제(徒弟)가 되었다. 16살 때인 1940년, 나치 독일을 피해 부모님을 따라 미국 뉴욕으로 이주해 제빵사로 일하면서 글쓰기를 공부했다.
1947년에 『The Hound』를 출간하면서 작가로 등단했고, 「The Reporter」와 「The Village Voice」 등의 매체에 글을 기고하는 칼럼니스트로 활동하였다.
그는 1963년에 『The Rothschilds(250년 금융재벌 로스차일드 가문)』으로, 1980년에는 『A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888/1889(황태자의 마지막 키스)』로 미국 국립도서대상에 노미네이트될 정도로 유명한 작가이다.
그 외의 작품으로는 『The Forever Street: A Novel』,『Runaway Waltz: A Memoir from Vienna to New York』등이 있다.
프레더릭 모턴은 역사, 특히 오스트리아의 역사를 소설의 형식을 빌려 쉽고 재미있게 풀어내는 작가로 명성이 있다.
그의 작품은 두 번이나 뮤지컬로 공연되는 영광을 누리기도 했다.
그의 책 『The Rothschilds』는 1970년 브로드웨이 뮤지컬로 공연되었고, 『A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888/1889』는 「Rudolf」란 이름의 뮤지컬로 각색되어 현재 세계 여러 나라에서 공연되고 있다.
노년을 미국 뉴욕시에서 보냈으며, 노년에도 불구하고 왕성한 창작 활동을 하다 2015년 4월 20일 별세했다.
