Ministry with Indigenous Peoples in a Post – Colonial Globalized World
In1788 Australia was not peacefully settled by Europeans but invaded. This was never acknowledged by treaty and the process of colonization that followed dispossessed the First Peoples of their land, language and culture, disempowering them as a people. Children were even removed from their families as part of a policy of assimilation so that they could be raised within European culture. In 1985 the Uniting Church realised the need ? and justice ? for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders to exercise direction over their own futures. It created the Uniting Aboriginal & Islander Christian Congress as an autonomous entity within the Uniting Church. The Congress became responsible for ministry to their own peoples, determining their own goals and objectives, deciding policies and priorities. In the last half of the 20thC Australia developed into a culturally and religiously diverse society with new expressions of faith. This has led to an increased interest in cross cultural ministry and exploring the ways in which differing cultural experiences may influence the way in which the Christian Gospel is interpreted. Sometimes the enthusiasm and imperative to proclaim the Gospel can lead to the assumption that models of evangelism that have worked elsewhere will also work in ministry with Indigenous peoples as well.
However, for many Indigenous Australians the Church is seen to be associated with the colonizing power that dispossessed them of their land, culture and language, even their children. They are often naturally suspicious of mission programs from visiting Christian groups if there is no consultation or involvement of them in the planning. Against this background it is critical that any mission programs with Indigenous Australians be undertaken with and not ‘at’ Indigenous people. If a mission project is being planned local Indigenous Christian groups in the area need to be approached and invited to help plan and participate in the program. Local indigenous Elders, whether or not Christian, should also be approached out of respect for their culture to ensure they are aware of what is planned. My paper will explore how non-Indigenous Christians can work in association with Indigenous Christians so that the Gospel of Jesus Christ can be shared in fresh life transforming ways that grow out of the heritage of Australia’s First Peoples, whilst aware of the painful past of which the church was at times, sometimes unwitting, a part. When considering ministry with Indigenous peoples in a post-colonial globalized world, the critical word becomes ‘with’.

1788년 호주에 정착한 유럽인들은 평화롭게 정착하기보단 침략으로 정착하게 되었다. 이것은 조약에 절대 인정받지 못했으며 원주민들의 땅, 언어 그리고 문화를 빼앗은 식민지화 과정은 그들의 국민으로써의 영향력을 빼앗았다. 동화정책의 일환으로 원주민 아이들을 유럽문화 안에서 양육 하기 위해, 그들의 가족들에게서 격리 시켰다. 1985년 연합교단은 원주민과 토레스 해협열도 주민들이 그들의 미래의 방향에 대한 권리행사의 필요성과 공정성을 인식했다. 연합교단 원주민과 열도 주민들의 기독교 의회가 연합교단 내에 자치단체로써 만들어졌다. 의회는 그들을 위한 사역과 자신들의 목적과 목표 결정 및 정책과 우선 순위 결정의 일들을 하고 있다. 지난 20세기 후반 동안 호주는 믿음의 새로운 표현들과 함께 문화적 그리고 종교적으로 다양한 사회로 발전했다. 이것은 상호 문화 사역과 다양한 문화 체험이 기독교 복음이 해석되는 방식에 영향을 줄 수 있는 길을 모색하는 관심의 증가로 이어졌다. 때로는 열정과 복음선포의 시급함이 다른 곳에서 적용되었던 전도모델이 원주민대상 사역에서도 잘될 것이라는 가정으로 이어질 수 있습니다.
그러나 많은 호주 원주민들에게 교회는 그들의 땅, 문화와 언어, 심지어 자신의 아이들을 탈취한 식민지배와 관련이 있는 것으로 보여진다. 그들은 종종 선교 프로그램 계획에 그들의 협의나 참여가 없는 경우 방문한 기독교 단체의 선교 프로그램을 자연스럽게 의심한다. 이러한 배경으로 호주 원주민 대상 미션 프로그램들은 원주민과 함께 수행되는 것이 중요합니다. 미션 프로젝트가 계획하는 경우, 그 지역의 현지 원주민 기독교 단체들에게 다가가서 그들의 도움과 프로그램 참여에 초대 할 필요가 있다. 또한, 기독교 여부와 상관없이 그들의 문화에 대한 존중하는 마음에서 그 지역의 원주민 장로들과 접촉하여 그들이 계획에 대해 알게 하는 것이 필요하다. 비 원주민 기독교인들이 어떻게 원주민 기독교인들과 함께 공조하여 한편으로는 시민지 시대 그 당시의 교회가 때때로 스스로 인식하지 못하고 공조했던 그들의 고통스러운 과거사를 인식하면서, 호주 최초 민족의 유산을 기반으로 해 발전한 예수 그리스도의 복음이 신선한 삶의 변환방법으로 공유 될 수 있는지를 모색할 것이다. 식민지 독립 이후 세계화된 세상에서의 원주민 사역을 고려할 때, 중요한 단어는 ‘함께’가 된다.
