미국의 SF작가이자 편집자인 가드너 도즈와는 1947년 7월 23일, 미국 매사추세츠주 세일럼에서 출생했다.
그는 1984년부터 2004년까지 Asimov’s Science Fiction의 편집자였다.
작가로서의 도즈와는 주로 단편소설을 써왔으며, 네뷸라상 단편소설부문을 2차례 (1983년의 The Peacemaker와 1984년의 Morning Child) 수상한 적이 있다.
장편소설은 적은 편인데, 1978년의 Strangers 이외에는 조지 앨릭 에핀저 (George Alec Effinger)와 공동으로 쓴 Nightmare Blue나, 얼음과 불의 노래로 유명한 조지 R. R. 마틴 (George R. R. Martin), 다니엘 아브라함 (Daniel Abraham)과 공동으로 쓴 Hunter’s Run 정도가 있다.
Asimov’s Science Fiction의 편집자가 된 후부터는 작품수가 줄어들었지만, 2000년대에 들어서는 다시금 창작에 전념하기 시작했다. 2006년에는 중편소설 Counterfactual이 사이드와이즈 상 (Sidewise Award)을 수상하기도 했다. 사실 도즈와는 편집자로서 더 유명한 인물이다. 1988년부터 편집자 일을 하기 시작했고, 은퇴한 2004년까지 거의 매년 휴고상의 최우수 편집자상을 수상하고 있었다. 또 SF의 서브장르 중 하나라고 지칭되는 사이버펑크라는 용어를 고안한 사람이기도 하다.
단편소설의 앤솔로지 편집으로도 잘 알려져 있다. Asimov’s Science Fiction을 그만둔 이후로도, 1984년부터 시작한 연간 베스트 SF앤솔로지의 편집일은 계속하고 있었다. 도즈와는 특히 모험SF나 스페이스 오페라를 좋아했으며, “center-core SF” 라고도 불리고 있다.
도즈와는 메사추세츠주의 세일럼 (Salem)에서 자랐지만, 너무 한적한 시골마을이라서 소설을 읽기 시작했다고 한다. 1966년부터 1969년까지 미국 육군에서 기자로 복무했으며, 병역을 마친 후부터는 SF커뮤니티에서 활동을 시작했다. 그는 2018년 5월 27일, 필라델피아에서 70세의 일기로 별세했다.
