스티브 딧코 (Steve Ditko, 1927년 11월 2일 ~ 2018년 6월 29일)는 미국의 만화가로, 스탠 리와 함께 스파이더맨 등을 만들어냈다. 닥터 스트레인지도 만들었다. 또한 그는 아이언맨을 디자인 하는데 빨간색과 노란색을 활용하여 중요한 디자인적 역할을 하였다.

슬로바키아어를 사용하는 구 오스트리아-헝가리 제국 출신의 비잔틴 가톨릭 이민자의 자녀였으며 그의 아버지 스티븐은 제철소의 예술적 재능을 갖춘 목수였으며 그의 어머니 안나는 가정주부였다.

노동 계급 가정에서 두 번째로 큰 아이인 그는 누나 안나 마리와 엘리자베스 자매, 패트릭 형이 그 뒤를 이었다.

신문 만화에 대한 아버지의 사랑에서 영감을 받아 특히 Hal Foster의 Prince Valiant인 스티브 딧코는 1939년 히어로 배트맨의 등장과 일요일 신문에 타블렛 크기의 만화책 삽입물에 실린 Will Eisner의 The Spirit으로 만화에 대한 관심이 높아졌고 만화가로 되었다.

딧코는 마블 창시자인 스탠 리와 1962년 ‘스파이더맨’을 선보이고 이듬해 또 다른 캐릭터인 ‘닥터 스트레인지’를 창작한 ‘슈퍼 히어로의 아버지’다. ‘스파이더맨’은 2002년 영화로 처음 개봉된 이후 할리우드 블록버스터급 시리즈로 자리 잡았으며 ‘닥터 스트레인지’도 2016년 영화로 만들어져 큰 인기를 끌었다.

당시 미국 뉴욕 경찰은 딧코가 2018년 6월 29일, 맨해튼 소재 아파트에서 숨진 채 발견됐다고 발표했다. 구체적 사인은 알려지지 않았지만 노환으로 사망한 것으로 알려졌다.

딧코는 1990년 ‘잭 커비 명예의 전당’에 이름을 올렸고 1994년에는 만화계 아카데미상으로 불리는 ‘윌아이스너 어워드’를 받았다.

○ 만든 캐릭터

• 스파이더맨

1962년 8월에 발간된 어메이징 판타지 15호로 처음 세상에 나온 캐릭터이며, 스탠 리와 함께 창작한 캐릭터이다. 스티브 딧코는 캐릭터 디자인을 맡았다. 본명은 피터 벤자민 파커이며 갈색머리와 살구색 피부를 가진 유대계 청년 남성이다.
본래 잭 커비가 캐릭터 작화를 맡을 예정이였으나, 스탠 리가 생각한 스파이더맨의 모습과는 달랐고, 그래서 스티브 딧코가 대신 작화를 맡을 수 있었다.
스티브 딧코의 스파이더맨 작업물은 당시 코믹스 작화 중 눈에 띌 정도로 스파이더맨의 민첩하고 자유로운 움직임을 잘 살리는 연출을 했다는 평을 받는다고 한다. 딧코는 이후의 모든 스파이더맨 코믹스 작화가들의 모범이 되고 있다. 국내 출간된 ‘피터 파커 스파이더맨 : 백 인 블랙’의 부록을 참고하길 추천한다.

1963년 7월에 발간된 스트레인지 테일즈 #110 에서 처음 등장한 캐릭터이며 스티브 딧코가 만든 캐릭터이다.
스파이더맨과 함께 스티브 딧코가 창조한 캐릭터로 유명하다.
본명은 스티븐 빈센트 스트레인지 이며 마블 코믹스의 등장인물로 DC 코믹스의 닥터 페이트의 영향을 받아 탄생한 캐릭터이다.

샘 레이미 감독, 토비 맥과이어 주연의 스파이더맨 실사영화 스파이더맨 트릴로지의 2편인 스파이더맨 2부터 등장하는, 피터에게 월세를 독촉하는 집주인 ‘딧코비치 씨’ (Mr. Ditkovtch)는 스티브 딧코의 이름을 참고한 배역이다.

본래 스티브 딧코 본인을 카메오로 출연시키려 했으나 스탠 리와 달리 스티브 딧코 본인은 영화 출연을 거부하여 대신 그의 이름에서 따온 예의 인물을 출연시킨 것이다.

딧코는 작가보다는 작품이 독자들에게 더 기억이 되어야 한다는 주의였어서 공식 자료들에 본인의 이름을 남기지 않는 일도 있었다고 한다.

그러나 스파이더맨의 창조자가 언급될 때는 항상 스탠 리와 마찰을 겪었다.

스탠은 캐릭터의 모든 기초 아이디어를 제시한 본인의 지분이 크다고 여겼고 딧코는 캐릭터에 생명을 불어넣은 디자인을 만든 본인의 지분이 크다고 여겼다.

스탠의 말에 따르면 스탠은 서로 공동 창작자로 인정하자고 타협안을 제시했지만 딧코는 늘 본인만이 창작자라고 생각했다고 한다.

In 1987, Ditko was presented a Comic-Con International Inkpot Award in absentia, accepted on his behalf by Renegade Press publisher Deni Loubert, who had published Ditko’s World the previous year. Ditko refused the award, and returned it to Loubert after having phoned her to say, “Awards bleed the artist and make us compete against each other. They are the most horrible things in the world. How dare you accept this on my behalf”. At his behest, Loubert returned the award to the convention organizers.

Ditko was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994.
