사라 밀리지 넬슨 (Sarah Milledge Nelson, 1931년 11월 29일, 미국 Florida에서 출생했다.
1953년 웰즐리 대학교에서 성서역사학을 전공 (학사)하였으며, 1968년 38세의 늦은 나이에 고고학 공부를 시작했다.
1973년 미시간 대학교에서 박사 학위를 취득한 후, 한국과 중국 고고학을 연구하였다.
1996년 하와이 세계동아시아고고학대회에서 한국고고학이 처음으로 독립 분과가 되게 하는데 기여하였으며, 강원도 양양군 오산리 신석기 유적을 소재로 한 소설 《영혼의 새》(Spirit Bird Journey)를 집필하기도 하였다.

○ 서울 암사동 유적과 넬슨 교수
‘서울 암사동 유적’은 1925년 (을축년) 대홍수가 일어나 땅속에 묻혀있던 토기와 석기 등이 노출되면서 세상에 알려졌다. 당시로는 일본 식민지 시대였으므로 별로 주목받지 못했다. 그 뒤 1968년 장충고등학교 야구장을 이곳에 건립하려고 터를 닦으면서 알려지기 시작했다. 이곳 한강 지역이 지금으로부터 6400년에서 3500년 전의 신석기 시대의 주거지임이 밝혀졌다. 그 뒤 추가 발굴 작업을 거쳐 1979년 사적 제267호로 지정되고 준비과정을 거쳐 1988년 8월 30일에야 비로소 일반인에게 처음 공개되었다.
넬슨 박사는 1970년 미군 군의관이던 남편을 따라 한국에 왔다. 늦게 고고학을 공부하면서 한국 선사 세대에 깊은 관심을 가졌고 미시건대 대학원에서 ‘한강 유역 신석기시대 빗살무늬 토기 연구’로 박사학위를 받았다. 1996년 하와이 세계 동아시아 고고학대회에서 한국 고고학이 처음으로 중국이나 일본에 종속되지 않은 독립 분과가 되게 하는데 기여하였다. 나아가 강원도 양양군 오산리 신석기 유적을 소재로 한 소설 ‘영혼의 새’ (Spirit Bird Journey)를 집필하기도 했다. 이 소설은 한국 출신으로 미국에 입양된 여성 고고학도 ‘클라라’가 한국에 유학 와 오산리 유적 발굴에 참가하며 출생의 뿌리와 인류의 선사시대 문화를 찾아가는 과정을 그렸다. 넬슨 박사는 이토록 한국을 사랑하였다.
넬슨 교수는 “그동안 한국 고고학이 국제적 관심 덜 받는 이유로 거대한 피라미드가 있는 것도 아니고 아메리카처럼 고대 도시유적이 있는 것도 아니었기 때문”이라면서 “이제는 문화를 그렇게만 보는 시대는 아니다.” 고 단언했다. 서울 암사 유적의 움집과 빗살무늬토기처럼 선사시대에 우리의 조상들이 “식량은 어떻게 저장했으며, 겨울에 움집 속에서 어떻게 잘 살 수 있었을까, 등이 앞으로 우리가 연구해야할 문제”라고 지적했다. 그리고 암사동 유적지는 한국의 주거양식을 알려주는 소중한 유적으로서 더 깊이 연구해야 한다며 그 가치를 인정했다.
넬슨 박사는‘서울 암사동 유적’에 대해 ‘훌륭하고 (wonderful) 매우 인상 깊다 (very impressive)라고 말하며 “유적이 중요하다고 그대로 두면 누가 아느냐? 중요한 점을 앞세워 널리 얘기해줘야 일반 사람도 이해할 것”이라고 현실적인 말을 했다.
