2020 나이독 주간 (NAIDOC Week) 11월 8∼15일 열려
주제는 “Always Was, Always Will Be”, 코로나19로 7월서 11월로 연기해 열어
해마다 7월에 열리는 나이독 주간 (NAIDOC Week) 행사를 올해는 코로나19로 인해 11월로 연기해 11월 8일부터 15일까지 열린다. NAIDOC은 National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee의 약칭이다.
NAIDOC Week는 호주 원주민과 토레스 해협 섬 주민들의 역사, 문화 및 업적을 기념하기 위해 매년 7월마다 ‘NAIDOC 주간’으로 열렸으나 올해는 안전을 고려해 11월에 열었다.
올해는 “Always Was, Always Will Be”를 주제로 호주 원주민과 토레스 해협 섬 주민들의 역사, 문화적 유구함을 기념했다.
매년 시상식은 각 영역별(Lifetime Achievement Award, Person of the Year, Female Elder of the Year, Male Elder of the Year, Caring for Country Award, Youth of the Year, Artist of the Year, Scholar of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Sports person of the Year)로 10명에게 특별한 상이 수여됐으나 올해는 여러 제약으로 인해 2021년도에 함께 시상할 계획이다.
2019년도에는 Person of the Year – Dean Duncan / Lifetime Achievement Award – David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu, AM / Female Elder of the Year – Thelma Weston / Male Elder of the Year – Greg Little / Caring for Country – Littlewell Working Group / Youth of the Year – Mi-kaisha Masella / Artist of the Year – Elma Gada Kris / Scholar of the Year – Professor Michael McDaniel / Apprentice of the Year – Ganur Maynard / Sportsperson of the Year – Shantelle Thompson이 수상한 바 있다.
NAIDOC 위원회는 한때 NAIDOC 주간에 전국에서 벌어지는 행사들을 담당했다. NAIDOC Week의 역사는 1920년대부터 시작되었다. 사실 1920년대 이전에는 원주민들이 국가로부터 제대로 대우를 받지 못했기 때문에 호주 원주민 인권단체들은 1월 26일인 호주의 날에 불매운동을 했다. 원주민들의 존재와 적합한 대우의 필요성을 알리기 위해 NAIDOC이 생겨났다고 한다.
매년 7월 초에 NAIDOC Week가 열리며 이 주간의 끝에는 국가적인 NAIDOC Awards 시상식이 있다. 매년 다른 도시에서 시상식이 열리는데, 호주 원주민이 더 나은 삶을 살 수 있도록 기여하고 원주민에 대한 주요이슈를 사회에 널린 알린 사람에게 주어진다.
NAIDOC Week에는 원주민 공동체뿐만 아니라 정부기관, 지역사회단체, 지역협의회, 직장, 학교 및 스포츠 단체 등의 수가 계속 증가하고 있다. NAIDOC Week에 대한 자세한 정보는 www.naidoc.org.au에서 확인할 수 있다.

Regardless of when it is celebrated NAIDOC Week is an event of national importance for all Australians.
A week borne from a day of protest, NAIDOC Week each year reminds us of the ongoing aspirations of our communities as they continue the movement towards justice and equality.
Importantly, NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to come together to celebrate not only Indigenous achievement but the history, rich culture, and survival of the oldest continuing living culture on the planet.
Woven into the fabric of NAIDOC celebrations are the achievements of leaders and trailblazers of the past. While many NAIDOC Award ceremonies have been cancelled – including the National NAIDOC Awards – we commit to honouring and celebrating a new generation of inspirational achievers in 2021.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge the voluntary work and dedication of the many local and regional NAIDOC Committees, the individuals and organisations across Australia who each year are the driving force behind NAIDOC.
While NAIDOC Week each year celebrates and acknowledges our past and our present it also looks with hope towards the future. The sheer numbers of events and activities held every year emphasises the growing success and importance of NAIDOC Week.
Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
We want all Australians to celebrate that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.
That this county has the world’s oldest oral stories, the world’s first maps, and the earliest paintings of ceremony.
We are excited by the sheer number and diversity of celebrations and activities that are taking place across the country accommodating social gathering restrictions and social distancing measures because of COVID19.
We invite all Australians to take the time to learn, share and participate in these unique celebrations.
