로드니 윌리암 스타크 (Rodney William Stark)는 1934년 7월 8일, 미국 노스다코타 제임스타운에서 출생했다.
본래 언론학을 전공하고 기자로 활동하였으나, 진로를 바꾸어 캘리포니아 대학교 (University of California, Berkeley)에서 사회학 전공으로 석사학위(M.A.)와 박사학위(Ph.D.)를 취득했다.
이후 워싱턴 대학교(University of Washington)에서 32년 동안 사회학 및 비교종교학 분야 교수로서 활동하였다.
2004년 이래로 베일러대학 (Baylor University)의 사회과학 교수로 있었다.
종교사회학에 적용시킨 종교사회학 분야의 유명한 학자였다.
종교사회학 및 종교사에 관해 수십 권의 책을 저술했다.
