응구기 와 시옹오 / 티옹오 (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, 1938년 1월 5일, 영국령 케냐 카미리투 ~ 2025년 5월 28일, 87세)는 탈식민주의 문학을 대표하는 케냐 작가로, 본명은 제임스 기두가 응구기 (James Githuka Ngugi)이다.
소수민족과 소수언어에 대한 관심을 문학으로 형상화해온 그는 소잉카, 고디머, 쿳시 등과 함께 아프리카 문학을 대표한다.

1938년 1월 5일 영국령 케냐 중부 리무루 인근 카미리두 (Kamirithu) 출생으로, 응구기가 이름이며 ‘와 시옹오’는 키쿠유어로 ‘시옹오의 아들’이라는 의미를 담고 있다고 한다.
부유한 키쿠유 가문 출신인 응구기는 캄팔라의 마케레레 대학에서 공부하다가 영국의 리즈 대학으로 유학하게 된다. 이후 영어로 울지마 아이야, 사이의 강, 한톨의 밀알 등의 소설을 발표하였다.
1963년 케냐가 독립한 이후로는 과거 제국주의 세력과 결탁한 기득권 세력의 부패와 부정을 다룬 비판적인 문학 활동을 전개하게 된다. 한톨의 밀알 이후로는 영어가 아닌 현지어인 키쿠유어로 작품을 발표한 것이 특징이다. 1977년에 발표한 정치 풍자 희곡 ‘나는 원할 때 결혼하겠다’가 당시 케냐 정권의 미움을 사게 되고 1년 뒤 케냐의 대통령이 되는 대니얼 아랍 모이의 명령으로 체포되어 수감생활을 하게 된다. 수감생활 중 그의 대표작이 되는 ‘피의 꽃잎들’을 집필하고, 약 5년의 수감생활 끝에 석방된 1982년에 미국으로 망명하여 작품 활동을 지속하였다.

응구기 와 시옹오는 1938년 1월 5일, 케냐 중부고원 지역 리무루의 카미리수에서 태어났다.
케냐 내 최대 민족 집단인 기쿠유 출신이며, 평범한 농부인 집안의 세 번째 부인의 자식 중 다섯 째다.
영국 식민지 시대 케냐의 일류 중등학교였던 얼라이언스를 졸업한 후 우간다의 마케레레 대학과 영국의 리즈 대학에서 수학했다.
케냐의 일간지 ‘네이션’의 기자로 일하다 1970년 나이로비대학교 문학과 교수로 임용된다.
케냐가 독립을 달성한 후 서구적 근대화를 주축으로 한 국가건설이 추진됨에 따라 또다른 내부의 사회모순이 드러나고, 은구기는 10년간의 침묵 속에서 토착어에 대한 문맹퇴치운동과 연극운동에 몰두한다.
이러한 활동이 1977년에 발표된 문제작 『피의 꽃잎』의 내용과 관련되면서 그의 연극은 상연금지되고 그는 1년간 투옥된다. 그후 1982년 미국으로 망명했다.
세계적인 항의운동으로 석방된 후 계속 키쿠유어·스와힐리어에 대한 창작에 몰두하고 있으며, 1974년에 제3세계 최고의 권위인 로터스상, 2001년에 노니노국제문학상, 2016년에는 박경리문학상을 수상했다.
그는 미국 어바인의 캘리포니아 대학에서 영문학과 비교문학 특훈교수 (Distinguished Professor)로 재직했다.
그 밖의 다른 작품으로는 『십자가 위의 악마』 (1980)와 『귀향―아프리카와 카리브해 지역의 문학·문화·정치에 관한 에쎄이』 등이 있다.

현대 아프리카 문학을 대표하는 작가이자, 탈식민주의 문학을 주도해온 거장이다.
1938년 영국 식민지배하의 케냐 출생으로, 1950년대에 수년간 지속된 마우마우 무장봉기에 가족들을 비롯한 많은 이들이 연루되어 고초를 겪는 모습을 지켜보며 자랐다.
식민지 케냐의 일류 고등학교인 얼라이언스를 거쳐 우간다 마케레레 대학에서 영문학을 전공하며 첫 희곡 「흑인 은둔자」를 집필, 상연한다.
이후 영국의 리즈 대학에 입학, 재학 중에 동아프리카 출신 작가가 쓴 첫 영문 소설인 『울지 마, 아이야』 를 발표하고, 『샛강』 『한톨의 밀알』을 잇달아 출간하며 세계적인 작가로 떠오른다.
1977년 작 『피의 꽃잎들』을 전후로 한층 더 사회주의적이고 탈식민주의적인 전환을 보여주는데, 이후 제임스 응구기라는 영어 이름도 버리고, 집필 활동 역시 영어 대신 기쿠유어와 스와힐리어로 이어간다.
같은 해, 신식민체제의 실상을 고발한 풍자극 「결혼은 내가 하고 싶을 때 한다」를 기쿠유어로 집필, 상연하지만, 당국에 의해 상연 중단되고 교도소에 투옥된다.
『십자가 위의 악마』는 수감 중에 화장지에 써내려간 작품으로 그의 첫 기쿠유어 소설이자, 최초의 기쿠유어 현대 소설로, 작가의 문학세계 및 아프리카 문학사에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
국제사면위원회의 도움으로 풀려난 뒤 미국으로 망명하여 예일 대학, 뉴욕 대학 등에서 강의를 했으며 현재 캘리포니아 대학에서 비교문학 교수로 재직 중이다.
로터스 문학상, 노니노 국제문학상, 전미도서비평가협회상, 니꼴라스기옌 문학상 등을 수상했으며, 2009년에는 맨부커상 최종후보에 올랐고, 매년 유력한 노벨 문학상 수상 후보로 꼽히고 있다.
