당신은 기꺼이 그리스도를 위해 바보가 되겠는가?
Are you willing to be a fool for Christ?
“아무도 자신을 속이지 말라. 너희 중 누가 이 시대에서 지혜 있는 줄로 생각하거든 어리석은 자가 되어야 한다. 그리하여야 지혜로운 자가 되리라.” “Do not deceive yourself. If anyone of you thinks he is wise in this age, he must become foolish so that he can become wise.” (1 Cor. 3:18)
어느 날 20세기 위대한 캐나다인 설교자 해리 아이언사이드는 동료들과 함께 나룻배를 타고 여행을 가고 있었다. 그들은 찬양하며 은혜로운 시간들을 보내고 있었다. 그 나룻배에는 논크리스천들도 타고 있었지만 모두들 아이언사이드 그룹의 찬양을 즐기고 있었다. 그때 어떤 이가 시비조로 끼워들며 말했다. “당신네들은 누구요? 대체 이러한 공적인 곳에서 무엇을 하고 있는거요?” One day, the great Canadian preacher of the 20th Century, Harry Ironside was traveling with friends on a ferry. They were having a glorious time singing praises to the Lord. There were non-believers in the ferry but they, too, appear to be enjoying the singing from Ironside’s group. Then, someone critically interrupted them saying, Who are you people? What on earth are you doing at a public place like this?”
아이언 박사가 대답했다. “우리는 기독교인들로서 그냥 찬양하면서 좋은 시간을 갖고 있답니다.” 남자가 대답했다. “당신들 모두 멍청이들이군요.” 아이언사이드는 대답했다. “맞습니다. 우리는 모두 바보들이지요. 그러나 그리스도를 위한 바보들이랍니다. 그래서 너무 행복한 바보들입니다.” Dr. Ironside replied, “We’re just some Christians having a good time praising the Lord.” And the man replied, “You’re a bunch of fools!” Ironside said, “You’re right! We’re all fools but fools for Christ. That makes us so happy fools.”
타인들 보다 더 똑똑해 지고자 하는 이 사회에서 바보는 환영받지 못한다. 부모들은 자신들의 자녀를 다른 아이들보다 더 똑똑한 아이로 만들기 위해 엄청난 돈을 쓴다. 마치 전세계가 몇몇의 똑똑한 사람들에 의해 이끌려지고 있는 것 처럼 보이는 것과도 같다. Fools are never welcome in this society of ‘trying to be smarter than others’. Parents pay huge money to teach their children to be smarter than others. It’s like the whole world appears to be led by a small bunch of smart guys.
우리는 6살 때 부터 언행에 있어 똑똑하게 처신하도록 배워왔다. 많은 사람들이 이렇게 믿고 있다. ‘더 지혜롭고 똑똑해지면 타인들 보다 더 높이 올라간다.’ From the age of 6, we have been taught to be smart in words and actions. Many believe that ‘the wiser and smarter they become, the higher they rise above others’.
그러나 우리는 이 세상을 하나님의 자녀로 살고 있는 것이다. 진실된 그리스도인은 종종 세상의 눈에 비춰 바보일는지 모른다. 당신은 그리스도를 위해 스스로 바보가 되고자 하였던 때가 언제였는가? 한번 생각해 보자! However, we are living in this world as God’s children. Truthful Christians may be sometimes fools in the eyes of the world. When was the last time you intended to be a fool for the sake of Christ? Think about it!
