Christianity and Climate Change
While Christian faith has sometimes been accused of justifying human domination of nature, what it really intends is that we do God’s will which is for the benefit of all creatures and the earth not only humans. Humans have been given a special place in creation by God which calls for living in response to God’s purposes for all creation.
For Christians the opening chapters of Genesis are very important. First is creation itself which came to be understood as creation out of nothing by God, creation ‘ex nihilo’. There are in fact two different creation stories in Genesis which are to be read metaphorically not literally. Then there is the story of the first humans, ‘Adam and Eve’, and what came to be known as the Fall. Because of their disobedience they were cast out of paradise, the garden of Eden, and required to live a much harder life. This story is a symbolic, not literal one. There never was a garden of Eden. The story depicts what humans have typically done, namely not trusted God and turned from God’s will. Instead, they have asserted themselves to their detriment.
In the New Testament God is recognised as the Creator. John’s gospel deliberately echoes Genesis in speaking about God creating all things through God’s Word which is affirmed to have become incarnate in Jesus Christ (John 1:1-3, 14). Paul in Colossians says that all things have been created through him and for him (Colossians 1:16). God is the Creator and Lord who creates and redeems through Jesus Christ who lived among us, was crucified, and raised to be one with God. God continues to be present in the world by God’s Spirit. God’s desire is the reconciliation and renewal of all creation.
The scientific account of the universe is that it started over 13.5 billion years ago, and the Earth was formed some 4.5 billion years ago. Science cannot talk about absolute beginning but only project back to the beginning of the universe. Christian faith affirms God as the Creator who created not just a random creation but a creation which was called ‘good’ that is according to God’s purposes.
Scientific investigations have helped us to understand the development of the earth and life on earth. We now know something of the geological changes that have taken place over long periods of time divided into eons, eras, epochs and ages, including ice ages. We are aware of continental tectonic plates that have moved and continue to do so. The emergence of life led progressively to higher forms of life up to us, Homo Sapiens. Humans first evolved in East Africa about 2.5 million years ago. They then moved to North Africa, Europe, and Asia. Humans evolved into Neanderthals in Europe and western Asia. Interestingly modern Homo Sapiens in the Middle East and Europe have traces of Neanderthal DNA of up to 4%. For modern Melanesians and Aboriginal Australians there is up to 6% Denisovian DNA, another human species. There was clearly some interbreeding between Homo Sapiens and other human species prior to their dying out.
Homo sapiens has become the dominant species on planet Earth especially in the last two hundred years. The world population has grown from 1.6 billion in 1900 to 3 billion in 1960 to 8 billion by the end of 2022. The last 50 years have seen massive technological developments and exploitation of the environment and increasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This has resulted in global warming leading to human influenced climate change. Scientist have recognised this for some time, but it has become increasingly evident with recent extreme weather events – droughts, heat waves, floods, and powerful storms. Humans are the main cause of this rapid change. Humans have taken over the habitats of other creatures and cut down the trees for their purposes, domesticated a few animals and exploited them, caused many extinctions, and are in danger of making the world a much less hospitable place.
Those with power and influence are now recognising the need for change. Many people, including school children, are calling for action. Christian and other religious leaders, with Pope Francis notably involved with his environmental encyclical, are speaking out. We need to rapidly phase out fossil fuels and foster renewable energy alternatives.
A new epoch has been postulated, the Anthropocene, recognising that humans themselves are the main driver of climate change. It is humans who have dominated the earth, cleared the land, polluted the oceans, and have sent carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in unprecedented ways. It is up to us to make personal and political changes. All of us can live more simply and responsibly towards the environment and other creatures. Political parties and businesses can make decisions to move towards a sustainable future. This is not optional but essential if we are to have a world that we can continue to enjoy and live in.
What we need to do is to move towards a new epoch, what some are calling the Ecocene, in which there is harmony and sustainability not only among humans but all creatures and the earth. In this era there will be an appreciation for the intrinsic value of nature and other creatures. Humans will see themselves not as above nature but as part of it. We will recognise our special place in the world and therefore our greater responsibility to ensure its well-being.
The Ecocene is like the reign of God that Jesus proclaimed. As Christians we are to pray and work towards God’s realm, the transformed world that God will finally bring in its fullness. We do so looking to Jesus who in contrast to the first ‘Adam’ fully trusted and lived by God’s loving, just and peaceable will. God’s Spirit is at work in the world, and we can seek to discern and cooperate with what God wants. We are to use our God given capacities to care for and appreciate the world and all who live here on Earth.

기독교 신앙은 때때로 인간이 자연을 지배하는 것을 정당화한다는 비난을 받기도 하지만, 그것이 진정으로 의도하는 것은 인간만이 아니라 모든 피조물과 지구를 위한 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 것이다. 인간은 모든 피조물에 대한 하나님의 목적에 대한 응답으로 살기를 요구하는 하나님에 의해 창조물에서 특별한 위치를 부여 받았다.
기독교인들에게 창세기의 시작 부분은 매우 중요하다. 첫째는 창조 자체가 하나님에 의해 무로부터의 창조, 즉 무 (ex nihilo)의 창조로 이해되게 된 것아다. 실제로 창세기에는 문자적으로가 아니라 은유적으로 읽어야 할 두 개의 다른 창조 이야기가 있다. 그 다음은 최초의 인간인 ‘아담과 이브’의 이야기와 타락으로 알려지게 된 이야기다. 불순종으로 인해 낙원인 에덴동산에서 쫓겨났고 훨씬 더 힘든 삶을 살아야 했다. 이 이야기는 문자적인 것이 아니라 상징적인 것이다. 에덴동산은 결코 없었다. 이 이야기는 인간이 일반적으로 행하는 일, 즉 하나님을 믿지 않고 하나님의 뜻에서 돌아섰던 일을 묘사한다. 오히려 그들은 손해를 입었다고 주장했다.
신약에서 하나님은 창조주로 인정된다. 요한복음은 예수 그리스도 안에서 성육신되었다고 확증된 하나님의 말씀을 통해 하나님이 만물을 창조하셨다는 이야기에서 의도적으로 창세기를 반향시킨다 (요 1:1-3, 14). 바울은 골로새서에서 만물이 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었다고 말한다 (골 1:16). 하나님은 우리 가운데 사시고 십자가에 못 박히시고 다시 살아나신 예수 그리스도를 통하여 창조하시고 구속하시는 창조주요 주님이시다. 하나님은 하나님의 영으로 이 세상에 계속 임재하십니다. 하나님의 갈망은 모든 피조물의 화해와 갱신이다.
우주에 대한 과학적 설명은 우주가 135억년 전에 시작되었고 지구는 약 45억년 전에 형성되었다는 것이다. 과학은 절대적인 시작에 대해 이야기할 수 없고 우주의 시작으로 거슬러 올라갈 뿐이다. 기독교 신앙은 하나님이 임의의 피조물이 아니라 하나님의 뜻에 따라 ‘선’이라 불리는 피조물을 창조하신 창조주임을 확언한다.
과학적 조사는 우리가 지구의 발달과 지구상의 생명체를 이해하는 데 도움이 되었다. 우리는 이제 빙하기를 포함하여 영겁, 시대, 시대 및 시대로 나누어진 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 일어난 지질학적 변화에 대해 어느 정도 알고 있다. 우리는 이동했고 계속 이동하고 있는 대륙 지각판을 알고 있다. 생명의 출현은 우리에게 호모 사피엔스라는 더 높은 형태의 생명을 점진적으로 이끌었다. 인간은 약 250만 년 전에 동아프리카에서 처음으로 진화했다. 그런 다음 그들은 북아프리카, 유럽 및 아시아로 이주했다. 인간은 유럽과 서아시아에서 네안데르탈인으로 진화했다. 흥미롭게도 중동과 유럽의 현대 호모 사피엔스는 최대 4%의 네안데르탈인 DNA의 흔적을 가지고 있다. 현대 멜라네시아인과 호주 원주민의 경우 다른 인간 종인 데니소비아인 DNA가 최대 6%까지 있다. 호모 사피엔스와 다른 인간 종들이 죽기 전에 분명히 약간의 이종 교배가 있었다.
호모 사피엔스는 특히 지난 200년 동안 지구에서 지배적인 종이 되었다. 세계 인구는 1900년 16억에서 1960년 30억, 2022년 말에는 80억으로 증가했다. 지난 50년 동안 엄청난 기술 발전과 환경 착취, 대기 중으로의 이산화탄소 증가가 있었다. 이로 인해 지구 온난화로 인해 인간이 영향을 받은 기후 변화가 발생했다. 과학자들은 이것을 한동안 인식했지만 최근의 극심한 기상 현상 (가뭄, 폭염, 홍수 및 강력한 폭풍우)으로 인해 점점 더 분명해졌다. 이러한 급격한 변화의 주요 원인은 인간이다. 인간은 다른 생물의 서식지를 점령하고 목적을 위해 나무를 베어내고 소수의 동물을 가축화하고 착취했으며 많은 멸종을 초래했으며 세상을 훨씬 덜 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들 위험에 처해 있다.
권력과 영향력을 가진 사람들은 이제 변화의 필요성을 인식하고 있다. 초등학생을 포함한 많은 사람들이 행동을 촉구하고 있다. 특히 프란치스코 교황이 환경 회칙에 참여하는 등 기독교와 다른 종교 지도자들이 목소리를 높이고 있다. 우리는 화석 연료를 신속히 단계적으로 폐지하고 재생 가능한 에너지 대안을 육성해야 한다.
인간 자신이 기후 변화의 주요 동인임을 인식하는 새로운 시대인 인류세 (Anthropocene)가 가정되었다. 지구를 지배하고, 땅을 개간하고, 바다를 오염시키고, 전례 없는 방식으로 이산화탄소를 대기 중으로 보낸 것은 인간이다. 개인적이고 정치적인 변화를 만드는 것은 우리에게 달려 있다. 우리 모두는 환경과 다른 생물에 대해 더 단순하고 책임감 있게 살 수 있다. 정당과 기업은 지속 가능한 미래를 향한 결정을 내릴 수 있다. 이것은 선택 사항이 아니라 우리가 계속 즐기고 살 수 있는 세상을 만들기 위해 필수적이다.
우리가 해야 할 일은 인간뿐만 아니라 모든 생물과 지구 사이에 조화와 지속 가능성이 있는 새로운 시대, 즉 에코세 (Ecocene)라고 부르는 새로운 시대로 나아가는 것이다. 이 시대에는 자연과 다른 생물의 본질적인 가치에 대한 감사가 있을 것이다. 인간은 자신을 자연 위에 있는 것이 아니라 자연의 일부로 보게 될 것이다. 우리는 세계에서 우리의 특별한 위치와 그에 따른 웰빙을 보장하는 더 큰 책임을 인식할 것이다.
에코세는 예수님이 선포하신 하나님의 통치와 같다. 그리스도인으로서 우리는 하나님의 나라, 하나님께서 마침내 완성하실 변화된 세상을 향해 기도하고 일해야 한다. 우리는 첫 번째 ‘아담’과 대조적으로 하나님의 사랑스럽고 의롭고 평화로운 뜻을 온전히 신뢰하고 사셨던 예수님을 바라보고 있다. 하나님의 영은 이 세상에서 역사하고 있으며 우리는 하나님이 원하시는 것을 분별하고 협력하려고 노력할 수 있다. 우리는 세상과 이 땅에 사는 모든 사람들을 돌보고 감사하기 위해 하나님께서 주신 능력을 사용해야 한다.
