이탈리아의 여류 작곡가 이사벨라 레오나르다 (Isabella Leonarda, 1620 ~ 1704)의 Complete Trio Sonatas
이사벨라 레오나르다 (Isabella Leonarda, 1620년 9월 6일, 이탈리아 노바라 ~ 1704년 2월 25일, 이탈리아 노바라)는 1620년 9월 6일, 이탈리아 북부의 노바라에서 태어나 16살 때 그 지역의 수도원에 들어가 수녀가 되었다.
그녀의 집안은 유력 귀족 가문이었고 그녀가 속한 수도원을 재정적으로 후원했기 때문에 레오나르다는 배경을 등에 업고 수도원에서 좋아하는 음악에 더 자유롭게 몰두할 수 있었다.
그녀보다 600여 년 앞선 독일의 여성 작곡가 힐데가르트 폰 빙엔 역시 수녀로, 수녀라는 신분은 가정에 얽매여야 하는 여염집 여인과 달리 음악을 할 수 있게 만들었다.
레오나르다는 1704년에 84세로 숨질 때까지 평생 노바라의 수녀원에서 생활하면서 200곡에 가까운 곡들을 만든 것으로 알려졌지만, 오늘날 전해지는 것은 많지 않다.
그녀의 소나타 곡들은 4단계의 표준 형식을 벗어나 다양한 형식과 연주를 시도할 만큼 창의적이었다.
성 마리아를 기리는 등 대부분 종교적 색채가 짙었으며 재정적 후원을 받으려고 고위 성직자나 귀족, 왕에게 헌정됐다.
○ 생애 및 활동
이사벨라 레오나르다 (Isabella Leonarda)는 1620년 북부이태리에서 태어나 당대에 음악작품으로 존경받던, 여성의 지위가 낮고 외부활동을 제한받던 당시로서는 보기드문 여성 작곡가이다.
레오나르다는 16세에 카톨릭시설에 들어가 평생을 머물며 교육도 받았는데 그는 법률박사이자 지방정부 관리인, 귀족 바로 아래 기사 직위의 아버지아래 태어났다.
그녀는 아버지의 영향력으로 그 시설에 들어갔고 많은 경력을 쌓았는데 그녀의 뛰어난 재능으로 고향인근에는 그의 작품들이 널리 알려졌으나 다른 이태리지역에는 널리 전파되지 못하였다.
그녀는 60년간 작곡 등 음악활동을 했는데 모두 남아있지는 않지만 많은 작품이 전해진다.
기악곡과 소나타와 세속 칸타타같은 성악곡도 많이 작곡했는데 그의 작품들은 순결한 음악이란 평을 듣고 있습니다.
출신집안이 부유하여 어릴때부터 좋은 교육을 받았을것이고 그녀가 평생있었던 종교시설의 수녀들에게도 음악을 가르쳤을 것으로 생각된다.
그녀는 가수나 연주자로 명성은 높지않지만 종교곡분야에서는 작곡하지 않은 장르가 없을 정도이다.
특히 그녀는 이태리에서 기악곡쪽의 작품을 작곡한 여성 두명에 들어가는데 소나타분야에서 많은 작품들을 만들었다.
그녀는 다성음악 기초 하에 Harmony를 중요하게 처리했고 소나타작품에서는 다양한 변화를 보이는 구조의 작품들도 만들어 보여주고 있다.
레오나르다의 위치가 고위직이어서 생활을 위해 다른 수녀들이 써야하는 시간 대신에 행정적인 업무와 작곡에 많은 시간을 보낼수 있었을 것으로 생각한다.
그녀는 특히 성모마리아를 위한 곡들에 많은 노력을 기울인것 같다.
○ Leonarda: Complete Trio Sonatas
The only instrumental works by Isabella Leonarda are the twelve sonatas for 1, 2, 3 and 4 instruments belonging to Opus 16. The first eleven sonatas in this recording are written for two violins, violone and organ continuo, which makes them all trio sonatas in which the violone part dialogues on equal terms with the violins. These excellent works show that Leonarda belongs to the group of composers of the 1600s who significantly contributed to the development of the trio sonata, a genre later perfected by Arcangelo Corelli.

Born into a noble family, Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704) entered the Ursuline Convent in the Piedmontese city of Novara at the age of 16. Having taken holy orders she lived there for the rest of her life as a religious sister, later its director of music and Mother Superior. She evidently showed musical promise from an early age, as the first of her published collections of music dates from as early as 1640, when she was just 20 years old.
Following the Brilliant Classics portrait of Isabella Leonarda’s vocal output from Cappella Artemisia directed by Candace Smith (96626), the all-female ensemble of Giardino di Delizie presents a set of 11 Trio Sonatas which was published in 1683 as the composer’s Op.16. Isabella dedicated it to the Virgin Mary with a devotional preface: ‘If these pieces do not please the World, I shall be content if You like them, because You appreciate the heart above the intellect.’
In fact, Isabella’s music greatly pleased the rest of the world at the time: according to one French collector, ‘All the works of this illustrious and incomparable Isabella Leonarda are so beautiful, so charming, so brilliant, and at the same time so knowledgeable and so wise … that my great regret is not to have them all.’
While the Sonatas do not exhibit the bold contrasts or rich harmony of her contemporary Corelli, they nonetheless rise above many other contemporary examples of the genre, not least in the improvisatory freedom of their writing, especially in the slow movements. They are written for two violins, violone and organ continuo, which makes them all trio sonatas in which the the violins. violone parte dialogues on equal terms with the violins.
