Catherine Isabel Ritchie B.E.M, B.A., Dip. Ed. (b. 16 Aug, 1909; d.15 Feb, 2003)
Masan 1937-1941
Catherine Ritchie grew up on the family farm at Arawata near Korumburra. She attended the local primary school and continued her education in Korumburra and Leongatha, before entering the University of Melbourne where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Diploma of Education. She offered for service as a missionary educator and was appointed to Korea where she arrived on 17 March 1937. She spent some time in Tongnai with Margaret Davies, but then moved to Masan. After studying the language in Seoul, she became involved in youth work with the Youth Committee of the Presbytery, as well as having oversight of the two kindergartens and girls’ dormitory. She was withdrawn from Korea with the other missionaries just before Japan entered the war in 1941.
After a period of deputation for the Foreign Missions Committee, Miss Ritchie worked for two years with the Youth Department of the church. Then in 1944, she was appointed vice-principal of Rolland House. In July that year she and Miss Skinner were sent as a delegation from the PWMU to the Presbyterian Church of the New Hebrides. The delegation returned in October and recommended major changes in the mission work and the deployment of PWMU workers.
Miss Ritchie was appointed Principal of Rolland House, the Deaconess Training Institute, on 15 March 1945 and remained in that position till 1968. Her students found her to be a brilliant teacher and an understanding friend who kept in touch with her former students throughout her life. At the same time, she was extraordinarily humble and self-effacing.
She represented the Church at the Evanston, New Delhi and Uppsala General Assemblies of the World Council of Churches. She received the British Empire Medal for her services to the Church, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Theology for her contribution to theological education.
Miss Ritchie was a member of the Australian Presbyterian Board of Missions from 1952 till1968. She then joined the staff of the Board in 1968 as Overseas Secretary. She remained on the executive staff of the Board of Ecumenical Mission and Relations until 1977. She was a marvellous colleague – wise, theologically aware, articulate, and sensitive. Cath always had an eye and an ear for what was happening for other members of the office staff, and was always ready to both support them and to go into battle for them.
Cath retired to her family home at Arawata. But she remained a deaconess. In the last service which she led at the senior citizens’ retirement complex a few weeks before her death, Cath likened God to a parent eagle which builds its nest on the highest point it can find. When its fledglings are ready to learn to fly, the eagle pushes them out of the nest and swoops below them to provide a safety net in case they are unable to fly. The prime purpose of the parent eagle is to teach their young to fly, to soar and achieve their purpose in life. In many ways Cath modelled this image of God. She died at Korumburra on 15 February, 2003.
