The historic summits including the inter-Korean Summit and the Singapore Summit are opening a window of opportunity for peace on the Korean peninsula and the Northeast Asia region.
There are many fruitful outcomes from both summits including the Panmunjom Declaration that commits to bring about peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula and the Joint Statement at the Singapore Summit that pledges the complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. Both the Panmunjom Declaration and the Joint Statement at the Singapore Summit will play a critical role in defusing tensions by bringing an end to hostile activities and promoting reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula. These historic summits will become a turning point of history for the Korean peninsula and international community.
Korea is Australia’s 4th largest trading partner and there are lots of commonalities and ways in which Korea and Australia complement each other, to the extent that Korea and Australia can regard themselves as ‘perfectly matching partners’. Such bilateral complementarity provides solid grounds for upgrading Korea-Australia diplomatic relations to ‘strategic partnership’.

Ambassador Lee Baeksoon was appointed the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia in February 2018. Prior to his appointment, he was a Special Advisor to the Speaker of National Assembly in 2016-18, and served as the Ambassador of Korea to Myanmar in 2013-16. He also served as the Director-General for North American Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2012-13. He joined the Korean Foreign Ministry in 1985.
