내부의 것이 더 위험하다.
Things on the inside are more dangerous.
노틀담의꼽추는 20세기의 가장 유명한 소설 중의 하나다. 19세기 프랑스 낭만파주의의 시인이자 소설가이며 극작가인 빅터 위고가 썼다. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of the most famous novels in 20th century. It was written by Victor Hugh, a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement in 19th century.
그는 또한 “93”이라는 이야기를 쓰기도 했다He also wrote a story called “Ninety-Three.” 망망대해의 위험한 폭풍에 휘말린 배에 관한 이야기다The story is about a ship caught in a dangerous storm on the open seas. 겁에 질린 선원들에게 갑판 밑에서 부딪히는 소리를 들려왔다. The frightened sailors heard a crashing noise below the deck. 소리는 그 배의 화물의 일부인 대포에서 들려왔다. The noise came from a cannon, part of the ship’s cargo. 묶인 줄에서 풀려난 것이다. It had broken loose.
그 대포가 배의 흔들림으로 인해 전후로 움직이면서 The canon was moving back and forth with the swaying of the ship, 배의 측면에 충돌하고 있었다. crashing into the side of the ship. 이것으로 배가 침몰할 수도 있다. It could cause the ship to sink. 그래서 모든 선원들은 갑판 아래로 내려가서 풀려진 대포를 다시 묶도록 명령 받았다. So all the sailors were ordered to get down below the deck and retie the loose cannon, 부선장들과 요리사들 까지도 including the vise-captains and cooks. 배 안의 풀려진 대포가 바깥의 사나운 폭풍보다 훨씬 더 위험할 수 있기 때문이다. Because the loose cannon inside could be far more dangerous than the furious storm outside.
그것은 우리의 삶과도 같다That is like our life. 삶의 폭풍들이 우리 주위를 공격할 수도 있다Storms of life may blow around us, 이를 테면, 사랑하는 이들의 죽음such as the deaths of our loves ones, 직장을 잃는 것 the loss of jobs, 건강이나 가족 문제들, 등등과 같은 것이다 health or family issues, etc. 하지만 이러한 외부의 폭풍들이 우리의 삶에 가장 무거운 위험을 야기시키는 것은 아니다 But it is not these exterior storms that really pose the heaviest danger to our lives.
우리의 인생을 통째로 전복시킬 수 있는 것은 우리 안에 있는 끔찍한 부패다 It is the terrible corruption inside us, that can completely overturn our life. 몇 가지 예를 들면Take a few examples, 증오, 시기, 열등감, 불신, 의심 같은 것이다such as hatred, envy, inferiority, distrust, doubt, etc.
예수께서 우리 안의 것들이 더 위험하며 이를 잘 다스려야 한다고 말씀하셨던 것도 이러한 이유에서다. “사람 밖에서 몸 안으로 들어가 그를 더럽힐 수 있는 것은 하나도 없다. 오히려 사람에게서 나오는 것이 그를 더럽힌다 (막 7:15)” That is why Jesus stressed that things on the inside are more dangerous than things on the outside of our minds and bodies. “There is nothing that goes into you from the outside which can make you ritually unclean. Rather, it is what comes out of you that makes you unclean. (Mk 7:15)”
