판도라 상자의 희망 / Hope in the Pandora’s Box
비전이 없는 백성은 망한다고 성경은 말한다. 이것은 매우 뜻 깊은 교훈으로 이 세상의 모든 개인과 집단에 적용된다. 그리스도인이든 아니든 상관없다. 비전은 늘 우리에게 희망감을 가져다준다. ‘People without vision perish’, says the Bible. This is a very meaningful lesson that applies to every individual and group in this world, whether they are Christians or not. Vision always brings us a sense of hope.
아마 당신은 ‘판도라’라고 불리는 그리스 신화에 관해 들어보았을 것이다. 판도라는 최초의 인간 여성으로 그들의 전설에 의하면 인간 역사에서 가장 아름다운 독보적 여인이었다. 여러 신들이 완벽한 미의 선물과 함께 그녀를 창조하였던 것이다. You probably heard about a Greek mythology called ‘Pandora’. Pandora was the first human woman and was the single most beautiful female in human history according to their legends. Many gods created her with gifts of perfect beauty.
신들은 그녀에게 조그마한 상자를 준 후 와 그녀를 지구에 보냈다. 신들은 그녀에게 그녀가 한 가지만 제외하고는 모든 것을 마음대로 할 수 있다고 말했다. 신들은 그녀에게 절대로 상자를 열지 말라고 명령했다. 하지만 판도라는 단순한 호기심에서 상자를 열어보았다. 그러자 갑자기 온 갓 종류의 공포와 고통과 질병들이 상자로부터 도망쳐 나왔다. The gods gave her a little box and then sent her to earth. They told her that she could do anything and everything except one thing. They commanded her never to open the box. But Pandora opened the box out of simple curiosity. Then, all of a sudden, all sorts of terrors, pains and diseases escaped out of the box.
판도라는 급히 상자를 닫았지만 때는 이미 늦었다. 모든 것이 다 나와 버렸다. 오직 한 가지만 제외하고.. 그 한 가지가 ‘희망’이었다. Pandora hurried to close the box, but it was too late. Everything came out except only one thing. That one thing was HOPE.
이 세상에 아무리 많은 악함과 고난이 있다 하더라도, 심지어 우리가 완전한 암흑의 터널을 지나고 있다 할지라도, 우리는 결코 절망해서는 안 된다. 절대로 희망을 포기해서는 안 된다. 믿는 이들에게 믿음은 희망하는 것들의 본질이다(히 11:1). No matter how many evils or sufferings are around in the world, even though we are passing through a tunnel of total darkness, we must not give in at all. We should never give up on hope. For believers, ‘faith is the substance of things that they hope for’.(Hebrew 11:1)
그것이 기독인의 삶이 가능성과 비전들로 가득 차 있는 이유다. That’s why Christian life is full of possibilities and visions.
우리가 숨 쉬는 한, 언제나 희망은 존재한다. As long as we breathe, there is always hope.
