Climate Change Action
The international climate summit, COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland is almost upon us. Hosted by the UK from 31 October to 12 November, 2021, it will be the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference. It particular it aims to bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It will be an extremely important meeting for the future of our planet and all its creatures, not only humans.
What is needed is to reduce our carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and to take serious steps toward this by 2030. Not to do so will result in global warming such that we will experience more extreme weather events, damaging storms and rising ocean levels. This is already happening but the projections for the future, if decisive action is not taken, are dire. There have been climate actions in Australia and around the world recently calling for bold action by 2030.
School students have called for action. Here is what Owen from School Strike 4 Climate Australia has written. They had actions on 15 October across Australia both in person and online.
My name is Owen, I’m a high school student living on stolen Gadigal and Bidjigal land in Warrang or so called Sydney. I’m raising my voice for climate action now becauseI care about the health and wellbeing of current and future generations, creating future-proof jobs in growing clean energy industries, a healthy natural world for people and animals, and protecting communities from extreme storms, fire and heatwaves.
I believe our leaders must switch from coal and gas to clean energy, power our communities and transport with clean energy, send our sunshine around the world with green hydrogen and manufacturing, cap political donations, including from coal and gas companies, improve transparency, and protect and restore nature to be the lungs that clean the air for wildlife and people.
I am involved in ARRCC (Australian Religious Response to Climate Change, a multi-faith network concerned about climate change). ARRCC linked up with an international network called GreenFaith International in global days of action on 17 and 18 October. The key organiser in Australia Tejopala Rawls had this to say, first about Sunday 17 and then about Monday 18 October.
What a day! All over the country people of faith have taken bold and decisive action for the climate. There were well over 120 faith communities involved across Australia today! There are more than 475 actions taking place around the world in no fewer than 43 countries!
What a huge day! This was the day when the Prime Minister told his party room that he plans to announce a target of net zero by 2050, but that he also plans not to change his target for 2030. This is one of the weakest 2030 targets in the world – 26 to 28% by 2030 compared with 2005 levels.
That’s why what you did today really mattered. While a target for 2050 is a good start, without a serious target for 2030 it is really just window dressing. Climate change is a race against time and it’s what we do by 2030 that really counts. And you were out there in force, showing that we need bold action by 2030 and that it really does need to start right now. Not way off in the future.
And, like yesterday, faith communities from across Australia have come together in action. The level of ambition we have been calling for is to be roughly on a par with the targets for 2030 set by our major trading partners and allies – the UK at 68% and the US and EU at 50%. That’s at least double what the Prime Minister plans.
You were out there at the offices of key MPs – in marginal electorates, in heartland electorates, outside the office of the Prime Minister and the Treasurer, and outside the office of the person holding things up the most right now – Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce.
People assembled at the Prime Minister’s office in Cronulla making their point about the need for greater action on climate change. A group also gathered in Tamworth at the Deputy Prime Minister’s office. This group included the Moderator of the NSW/ACT Synod of the Uniting Church. Our Prime Minister Scott Morrison has finally said he will attend the COP26 Glasgow meetings. He will go with Australia having a very poor record. Tim Flannery the Chief councillor of the Climate Council has written, “No other developed nation has performed as badly in terms of past emissions or commitments to cut them.”
What is needed is what was on the banners, “Bold climate action by 2030 starting now.” Nothing less will be satisfactory. The scientific community has been alerting people to the dangers of global warming for years. Few people continue to be climate change deniers. The extreme weather events around the world, from raging bush fires to devastating storms and floods, in the past few years have been clear evidence. Pacific island nations have experienced rising ocean levels and glaciers at the poles have been melting. If we want to limit the effects of global warming then serious action needs to take place immediately. Leaving it any longer will only make it harder to achieve the changes required. And that is just to halt the rising temperatures to 1.5 – 2.0 degrees. Any warmer would be catastrophic.
Why am I concerned about this as a Christian, a person of faith? I believe in a Creator God who continues to care for the creation and all its creatures. As I read the Biblical accounts of creation, what comes across to me is the special place of humans which calls for responsibility under God, not selfish exploitation and abuse of the natural world. We need to use our human capacities and freedom for the common good of the planet discerning how to do so in the coming years.
