Evil People
Erin Patterson was recently convicted of murdering three relatives and nearly killing another through the use of poison mushrooms in a carefully prepared meal. The jury found her guilty for the evidence against her was damning. The case gained international attention. Dr Chris Webster who met her in hospital concluded, “She was evil and very smart to have planned it all and carried it out.” We do call such people evil for their murderous actions are calculated to achieve their selfish and hateful ends. However, when some people gain political power, their self-interested and evil intentions can result in not just a few but thousands of people suffering and dying as a direct result of their political decisions.
As already indicated, individual evil people act out of selfish and malicious motives. Usually, they have had very negative experiences earlier in life and then come to inflict suffering and death on others. Political extremists once in power are able to use their position to impose their views in political decisions that negatively impact thousands and even millions of people. While Adolf Hitler is the worst example, currently in President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and President Donald Trump we have three leaders whose actions let me suggest are evil.
Vladimir Putin was a KBG agent prior to the changes that came to Russia ending the Soviet Union. Now entrenched in power as President, Putin desires to see the expansion of Russia and increase its territory and influence. Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014 to give it a sea port. He supported his ally President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war, with the aim of obtaining naval bases in the Eastern Mediterranean. He launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for war crimes. Current estimates are that there have been well over a million casualties in the war so far with as many as 250,000 Russians killed and up to 90,000 Ukrainians.
Under Putin’s rule, the Russian political system has been transformed into an authoritarian dictatorship with a personality cult. Elections are far from free and fair. His rule has been marked by endemic corruption and widespread human rights violations. He has imprisoned and suppressed political opponents, notably Alexei Navalny who was poisoned and later died in a remote Russian prison. Intimidation and censorship of independent media in Russia has been characteristic.
Benjamin Netanyahu has been the longest serving Prime Minister of Israel. In order to stay in power, he has readily appealed to the hard right of Israeli politics. He has moved away from democratic practices towards authoritarianism. Israelis have mistreated Palestinians for decades and increasingly taken over their land. The 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas triggered the Gaza war. Netanyahu has been reluctant to end the war and gain the return of the remaining Israeli hostages for he desires to take over Gaza.
In October 2024, he ordered an invasion of Lebanon with the stated goal of destroying the military capabilities of Hezbollah, a key ally of Hamas that helped them since the 7 October attack. After the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Netanyahu directed an invasion of Syria against the current Syrian government. He also presided over the 2025 Israeli strikes on Iran, which escalated into the Iran–Israel war.
An estimated 75,000 Palestinians have been killed and there is another over 8,500 nonviolent deaths, due to starvation, disease, and the collapse of healthcare systems, bringing the combined toll of the war to nearly 84,000 lives lost. Israel has used its military power to devastate Gaza. It has repeatedly bombed hospitals, schools and places of refuge under the pretext of wanting to kill Hamas fighters. Israel has blocked humanitarian aid and used starvation tactics against the Palestinians. In setting up its own aid distribution, Israeli troops have killed hundreds of people simply seeking to get some aid supplies.
Netanyahu’s government has been accused of genocide in Gaza, culminating in the South Africa v. Israel case before the International Court of Justice in December 2023. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant in November 2024 for Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity as part of the ICC investigation in Palestine.
Donald Trump has not directly involved the USA in wars, other than ordering air strikes on Iran along with Israel. However, he has fully supported Israel’s waring activities. His 90% reduction of USAID which funded much needed support for refugees and other people in dire straits will have a huge impact. Recently Tim Costello, formerly CEO of World Vision Australia, visited refugee camps on the border of Myanmar. They are dependent on aid for the people to live who have nowhere to go. He estimates that the massive reduction in US international aid will result over ten million deaths in the coming few years. Trump made this decision on the basis of his “USA first” policy.
His “big, beautiful bill” combines deep tax cuts, immigration crackdowns, military expansions, and sweeping reductions to social welfare programs. It reduces taxes for the rich. $350 billion will go to immigration and border security increasing the capacity of the government to catch and deport illegal immigrants. An estimated 11.8 million Americans will be left without health coverage under Medicaid. Defence spending will increase by $150 billion despite already being massive. Universities will face new taxes on their endowments. Trump has become like a king or autocrat with all his executive orders and lording it over the political scene. He loves all the attention. The Supreme Court is dominated by his supporters. Republican politicians are supine. The USA democracy has been undermined. His self-interested and narrow concerns negatively impact people around the world.
As a Christian, these leaders are the opposite of what I hold to be good leadership which is based on serving all people, not just one’s own group, especially those most in need. It is leadership based on compassion, justice, peace and wanting all people and the planet to flourish.

기독교인으로서 이러한 지도자들은 제가 생각하는 좋은 리더십과는 정반대입니다. 좋은 리더십이란 자신의 집단, 특히 가장 도움이 필요한 사람들뿐 아니라 모든 사람을 섬기는 것입니다. 그것은 연민, 정의, 평화, 그리고 모든 사람과 지구 전체의 번영을 바라는 리더십입니다.
