Living into the Vision
Christians are called to live into the vision Jesus portrayed of the reign of God. He said it was already breaking in through him though its fullness would be in the not yet future. He gave indications of the nature of God’s kingdom in parables and in his own symbolic actions. This vision was not without its precedents. Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 65:17-25 can also be taken as an indication of the vision we are to live into.
The background to the vision that Isaiah depicts in chapter 65 is as follows. When the Babylonians conquered the southern kingdom of Israel in 587 BCE the leaders and many people were taken into exile to Babylon. This was a devastating outcome. They lived there for the next 50 years until the Persian ruler Cyrus conquered Babylon in 539 BCE. Cyrus allowed Jews to return to their homeland in 538 BCE though many did not do so and others chose to migrate elsewhere. Conditions in their homeland were difficult. They did lay the foundations of a new temple though it was not very impressive. The walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt. Life was hard for those who returned.
In this context Isaiah 65 is a vision of God’s intention to bring about renewal, a new creation. It depicts the fullness of life lived in a new Jerusalem and a renewed Israel. The prophet calls on people to rejoice and be glad for what God will do. There will be no more weeping and distress in Jerusalem. Infants will live out their lives and not have them cut short. All people will live long lives. People will build houses and not have them taken over by others. They shall plant vineyards and enjoy the fruits that come. They shall not plant and someone else benefit. They shall not labour in vain and their children will not suffer sudden misfortune. The prophet even pictures the wolf and the lamb feeding together and the lion eating straw like an ox. They will not hurt or destroy says the Lord.
Isaiah sought to encourage his people with this vision and wanted them to trust in God who desires the best for his covenant people. Let me suggest that Isaiah’s vision has similarities to the fullness of the reign of God that Jesus proclaimed. In God’s kingdom love, justice and peace prevail. There is fullness of life and people can enjoy living with each other and God in a renewed creation. Like Isaiah, the book of Revelation in chapter 21 speaks of a new heaven, a new earth and a new Jerusalem. God will dwell among his people and there will be no more mourning, crying and pain.
In first-century Israel, Jesus knew that it was a critical time for the nation. He wanted people to respond to his message of the reign of God. If they did not, he was conscious of the consequences. He wept over Jerusalem for its lack of response. He warned his disciples about coming difficult times.
When some people commented on the impressiveness of the Jerusalem temple, Jesus predicted that it would be torn down. This was the temple that King Herod was responsible for rebuilding. It greatly expanded the old temple and was indeed a remarkable building in the ancient world. However, in the Jewish rebellion of 66-70 CE the Romans forcefully put down the uprising, devastated the city of Jerusalem and razed its temple. This had a crushing impact on the people who thought God would be on their side to defeat the Romans.
Jesus also pointed out that there will be wars, earthquakes, famines and plagues. There will be seeming signs of impending doom. The end, however, is not yet. Jesus did not know when the end would finally come. Only God the Father knows that. What Jesus did tell his followers was to remain faithful to him.
Isaiah looked to a time when there would be sustainable peace and prosperity not only between people but even between animals. In the realm of God, God rules and people live with compassion towards one another, practice justice and live peaceably.
Jesus calls us to live into the vision Isaiah gave and he provided in the kingdom of God. We are to work and pray towards a time when there shall be no more weeping as a result of war and violence, when infants will all have enough food and medical care, when old people will be able to live out their lives in dignity. People will have work and shelter and not be deprived of these or cheated by others. The environment will be sustainable and animals, both wild and domestic, will be able to live appropriately.
In the fulfilled reign of God compassion, justice and peace will prevail. War and poverty will be no more. Everyone will experience God’s love and will respond by loving God and their neighbour in return. People will be reconciled to one another and divisions will be overcome. Paul wrote, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28). That is, ethnic enmity will be overcome, social difference will not matter, gender issues will be resolved so that all live respecting one another and appreciating one another. This is what the new creation will be like.
This is not just a vision of heaven, of life beyond death, it is a vision we are to seek to live into now in the present. While it is always a matter of being on the way, we can strive to see something of the dream become more of a reality in this life, in our world. We are called to be people of peace seeking the common good. Jesus calls us to live as his disciples with the assistance of his Spirit and to pray for the kingdom to come on earth.

이사야는 이 비전으로 그의 백성을 격려하고 그의 언약 백성을 위해 최선을 원하시는 하나님을 신뢰하기를 원했다. 이사야의 환상이 예수님이 선포하신 하나님의 충만한 통치와 유사하다는 점을 말씀드리고 싶다. 하나님의 나라에는 사랑과 정의와 평화가 충만하다. 생명의 충만함이 있고 사람들은 새로워진 피조물 안에서 서로 그리고 하나님과 함께 사는 것을 즐길 수 있다. 이사야서처럼 요한계시록 21장도 새 하늘과 새 땅, 새 예루살렘에 대해 말한다. 하나님은 그의 백성들 가운데 거하실 것이며 더 이상 애통과 부르짖음과 고통이 없을 것이다.
1세기 이스라엘에서 예수께서는 지금이 그 나라의 위급한 때임을 아셨다. 그는 사람들이 하나님의 통치에 대한 그의 메시지에 반응하기를 원했다. 그렇지 않으면 그는 그 결과를 알고 있었다. 반응이 없는 예루살렘을 두고 우셨다. 그분은 제자들에게 다가오는 어려운 때에 대해 경고하셨다.

예수님은 이사야가 주었고 하나님의 왕국에서 제공한 비전으로 살도록 우리를 부르신다. 우리는 전쟁과 폭력의 결과로 더 이상 울지 않고, 유아들이 모두 충분한 음식과 의료 서비스를 받으며, 노인들이 존엄하게 삶을 영위할 수 있는 때를 향해 일하고 기도해야 한다. 사람들은 일자리와 거처를 갖게 될 것이며 이를 빼앗기거나 다른 사람에게 속지 않을 것이다. 환경은 지속 가능할 것이며 야생 동물과 가축 동물 모두 적절하게 살 수 있을 것이다.
하나님의 긍휼이 충만한 통치에서 정의와 평화가 승리할 것이다. 전쟁과 가난은 더 이상 없을 것이다. 모든 사람은 하나님의 사랑을 경험하고 하나님과 이웃을 사랑함으로 응답하게 될 것이다. 사람들이 서로 화해하고 분열이 극복될 것이다. 바울은 “이제 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 여러분은 모두 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나입니다” (갈 3:28). 즉, 민족적 적대감을 극복하고, 사회적 차이를 무시하며, 젠더 문제를 해결하여 모두가 서로를 존중하고 감사하며 살게 될 것이다. 이것이 바로 새로운 피조물이 될 것이다.
이것은 단지 천국, 죽음 너머의 삶에 대한 비전이 아니라 지금 현재에 살고자 추구하는 비전이다. 그것은 항상 진행 중이라는 문제이지만, 우리는 이생에서, 우리 세상에서 꿈의 무언가가 현실이 되는 것을 보려고 노력할 수 있다. 우리는 공동선을 추구하는 평화의 사람이 되도록 부름 받았다. 예수님은 성령의 도우심으로 제자로 살며 왕국이 이 땅에 임하도록 기도하라고 우리를 부르신다.
