Our Context and Jesus
As we head towards Christmas 2022, what is the significance of the coming of Jesus at this time? The major concerns the world faces at present are the war in Ukraine and climate change. We have also had the Word Cup football to interest us. What is the relationship between these and Jesus?
The coming of Jesus at the first Christmas meant God becoming involved in the world in a new way. God not only sent prophets to speak God’s word but now became incarnate in Jesus, God’s Son. God identified with humanity and the world so much that God chose to enter human existence as a baby on that first Christmas. Jesus grew to become more than a prophet. He announced the coming of God’s kingdom, God’s righteous reign among us. It was already breaking into the present through Jesus’ activity and would come in its fullness in the future.
In Jesus’ time the major reality was the domination of Israel and other nations by the Roman Empire. It was a crisis time for the people of Israel many of whom wanted to rebel against Rome. Jesus came proposing an alternative approach to the way of violent rebellion and to the way of the Roman Empire. Jesus continues to do so for us if we would but listen and follow his way, the way of God’s reign which is characterised by love, justice and peace.
Russia’s war in Ukraine is the typical way of domination and empire. Putin holds that Ukrainian territory is Russia’s and so initiated this war to gain that territory. Now that the war is not going as he intended and Ukrainian fighters are pushing Russian troops back, Putin has reacted in retaliation by sending missiles. These are not aimed at military targets but at Ukrainian infrastructure to make life hard for the people especially with the onset of winter. The war has been condemned by most nations for the death, suffering and destruction it has caused. The ramifications affect not only the Ukrainian people but the world due to the disruption to trade as Ukraine is a major wheat producer. Russian trade with the West has also been implicated.
The war is the opposite to what God’s reign would have. God is above all rulers and presidents and desires that all people are treated with justice and compassion. God’s way is the way of peace and respectful negotiation seeking the common good. God affirms diversity and the fulfilled reign of God will be multicultural in which people from all nations, tribes and languages will offer praise to God (Revelation 7:9-12).
We saw at COP27 something like what God wants from the nations of the world. While more needs to be done, the nations of the world were willing to come together to talk, to come to agreement, to work on the common issue of global warming and climate change. A new global climate pact – the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan – was agreed at the summit. It included a historic commitment by richer nations to give money to developing nations to help them recover from the damage and economic losses wreaked from ongoing climate change impacts. This comes after a year of devastating climate change-related disasters, from severe floods in Pakistan and here in Australia to ongoing drought in East Africa, and record temperatures over the northern summer.
The challenge to limit global warming and to move away from fossil fuels is clear. But there was also disappointment expressed by some world leaders that there was no agreement to reduce fossil fuel usage. There was only limited progress on the ambition to reduce emissions. Nations, especially richer nations, need to act for the common long-term good and not in their own short-term advantage. This will not easily be achieved given the way politics usually functions which is on the immediate future and winning elections.
The way of Jesus is to consider the least and the most in need, rather than give preferential treatment to the rich and powerful. In God’s reign nations will be judged as to how they care for the least. In our current context of climate change that means giving particular consideration to people most affected by severe weather events and those nations, the poorer smaller nations, such as in the Pacific who are already feeling the effects of rising ocean levels and more powerful storms.
We have also had the World Cup football to interest us. The advertisements asserted that ‘football unites the world’. That may be an exaggeration, but football really is the world game with nearly every nation having football, soccer, as you need only minimum equipment to play. People from all nations, rich or poor, can kick a ball and some can develop remarkable skills in doing so. The World Cup competition is even bigger than the Olympic Games in terms of followers. Nations compete against nations in games that have passionate supporters. The scenes from the live coverage showed colourful and loud supporters and those watching screens in other places were equally passionate. National pride was evident especially when upsets occurred, such as Japan defeating Germany, Korea beating Portugal and Morocco winning over Spain then Portugal.
If the reign of God is multicultural then the World Cup football gave some indication of this. Nations were engaged in competition but mostly in friendly ways, evidenced by players helping others to get up and embracing after the end of the game. Like the Olympic Games the World Cup football brings athletes together for competition that can be interesting and exciting for those involved and those watching.
As we come to another Christmas, let us celebrate the birth of Jesus God’s Son, who would lead us into God’s realm and calls us to live by the values of the reign of God now. The world is often far from God’s will, but there are also indications of what could be when the way of Jesus, of God’s reign, is followed.

2022년 성탄절을 향해 나아가는 이 시점에 예수 재림의 의미는 무엇인가? 현재 세계가 직면한 주요 관심사는 우크라이나 전쟁과 기후 변화이다. 우리는 또한 우리의 관심을 끌만한 월드 컵 축구가 있다. 이들과 예수의 관계는 무엇인가?
첫 번째 성탄절에 예수님이 오셨다는 것은 하나님이 새로운 방식으로 세상에 관여하신다는 것을 의미한다. 하나님은 하나님의 말씀을 전하기 위해 선지자들을 보내셨을 뿐만 아니라 이제 하나님의 아들 예수 안에서 성육신하셨다. 하나님은 인류와 세상과 너무도 동일시하셨기 때문에 그 첫 번째 성탄절에 아기로 인간 존재에 들어오시기로 선택하셨다. 예수님은 자라서 선지자 이상이 되셨다. 그분은 하나님 나라의 도래, 우리 가운데 하나님의 의로운 통치를 선포하셨다. 그것은 이미 예수의 활동을 통해 현재에 침투하고 있었고 미래에 충만하게 올 것이다.
예수 시대의 주요 현실은 로마 제국이 이스라엘과 다른 나라들을 지배하는 것이었다. 당시는 로마에 대항하여 반란을 일으키고자 했던 많은 이스라엘 백성에게 위기의 시기였다. 예수님은 폭력적인 반역의 방식과 로마제국의 방식에 대한 대안적 접근을 제안하러 오셨다. 사랑, 정의, 평화로 특징지어지는 하나님의 통치의 길인 그분의 길을 듣고 따르기만 한다면 예수님은 우리를 위해 계속 그렇게 하신다.
러시아의 우크라이나 전쟁은 지배와 제국의 전형적인 방식이다. 푸틴은 우크라이나 영토가 러시아 영토라고 주장하고 그 영토를 차지하기 위해 전쟁을 일으켰다. 전쟁이 의도한 대로 진행되지 않고 우크라이나 전사들이 러시아군을 밀어내고 있는 지금, 푸틴은 미사일을 보내 보복으로 대응했다. 이들은 군사적 목표를 겨냥한 것이 아니라 특히 겨울이 시작되면서 사람들의 삶을 어렵게 만드는 우크라이나 기반 시설을 겨냥한 것이다. 전쟁은 그로 인한 죽음, 고통, 파괴로 인해 대부분의 국가에서 비난을 받았다. 우크라이나가 주요 밀 생산국이기 때문에 무역 중단으로 인해 그 결과는 우크라이나 국민뿐만 아니라 세계에 영향을 미친다. 서방과의 러시아 무역도 연루되어 있다.
전쟁은 하나님의 통치와 정반대이다. 하나님은 모든 통치자와 대통령 위에 계시며 모든 사람이 공의와 연민으로 대우받기를 원하신다. 하나님의 길은 공동선을 추구하는 평화와 정중한 협상의 길이다. 하나님은 다양성을 확언하시고 성취된 하나님의 통치는 모든 나라와 족속과 언어에서 온 사람들이 하나님께 찬양을 드리는 다문화적 통치가 될 것이다 (요한계시록 7:9-12).
우리는 COP27에서 하나님이 세계 열방에게 원하시는 것과 같은 것을 보았다. 더 많은 일이 필요하지만, 세계의 국가들은 지구 온난화와 기후 변화라는 공통 문제에 대해 이야기하고, 합의하고, 작업하기 위해 기꺼이 함께 모였다. 새로운 지구 기후 협약인 샤름 엘 셰이크 실행 계획이 정상 회담에서 합의되었다. 여기에는 진행 중인 기후 변화 영향으로 인한 피해와 경제적 손실로부터 개발도상국이 복구할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 부유한 국가들이 자금을 제공하겠다는 역사적인 약속이 포함되었다. 이는 파키스탄과 여기 호주의 심각한 홍수부터 동아프리카의 지속적인 가뭄, 북부 여름의 기록적인 기온에 이르기까지 1년 동안 엄청난 기후 변화 관련 재해가 발생한다.
지구 온난화를 제한하고 화석 연료에서 벗어나야 하는 과제는 분명하다. 그러나 일부 세계 지도자들은 화석 연료 사용을 줄이기 위한 합의가 이루어지지 않은 데 대해 실망감을 표시하기도 했다. 배출 감소 목표에 대한 진전은 제한적이었다. 국가, 특히 부유한 국가는 자신의 단기적 이익이 아니라 장기적 공동선을 위해 행동해야 한다. 이것은 가까운 미래에 있고 선거에서 승리하는 정치가 일반적으로 기능하는 방식을 고려할 때 쉽게 달성되지 않을 것이다.
예수의 길은 부자와 권세있는 자에게 우대하기보다 가장 필요한 자를 배려하는 것이다. 하나님의 통치에서 나라들은 가장 작은 자를 어떻게 돌보느냐에 따라 심판을 받을 것이다. 현재의 기후 변화 상황에서 이는 심각한 기상 현상의 영향을 가장 많이 받는 사람들과 해당 국가, 태평양과 같이 이미 해수면 상승과 더 강력한 폭풍의 영향을 느끼고 있는 더 가난한 작은 국가를 특별히 고려하는 것을 의미한다.
우리는 또한 우리를 흥미롭게 하는 월드컵 축구를 있다. 광고는 ‘축구가 세계를 하나로 묶는다’고 주장했다. 그것은 과장일 수 있지만 축구는 최소한의 장비만 있으면 되기 때문에 거의 모든 국가에서 축구를 하는 세계의 경기이다. 부유하든 가난하든 모든 국가의 사람들이 공을 찰 수 있으며 일부는 그렇게 함으로써 놀라운 기술을 개발할 수 있다. 월드컵 대회는 추종자 측면에서 올림픽보다 훨씬 크다. 국가는 열렬한 지지자가 있는 게임에서 국가와 경쟁한다. 생중계 장면에는 화려하고 큰 응원단의 모습이 담겼고, 다른 곳에서 스크린을 지켜보는 이들의 열기도 뜨겁다. 특히 일본이 독일을 꺾고, 한국이 포르투갈을 꺾고, 모로코가 스페인을 이긴 뒤 포르투갈을 꺾는 등 이변이 일어났을 때 국가적 자부심이 분명했다.
하나님의 통치가 다문화적인 것이라면 월드컵 축구는 이를 어느 정도 보여주었다. 국가들은 경쟁에 참여했지만 대부분 우호적인 방식으로 진행되었으며, 게임이 끝난 후 플레이어가 다른 플레이어가 일어나도록 돕고 포옹하는 모습을 보였다. 올림픽 게임과 마찬가지로 월드컵 축구는 관련자와 관중 모두에게 흥미롭고 신나는 경쟁을 위해 선수들을 한데 모은다.
또 다른 성탄절을 맞이하여 우리를 하나님의 영역으로 인도하시고 지금 하나님의 통치의 가치로 살도록 부르실 하나님의 아들 예수의 탄생을 축하하자. 세상은 종종 하나님의 뜻에서 멀리 떨어져 있지만, 하나님의 통치인 예수의 길을 따를 때 어떤 일이 일어날 수 있는지에 대한 징후도 있다.
