Politicans, Prophets and Jesus
We have just had a federal election with some significant changes taking place. We need good politicians to provide leadership for our nation. We also need prophets, those people who point out where our policies and practices have to change if they are to be more in line with God’s will for a compassionate and just society. Above all we need Jesus who answers the deepest needs we have linking us to God and to God’s purposes for all creation. I will say more about each of these.
In Australia we are fortunate to live in a stable democracy. When a political party does not perform to the satisfaction of the people, they can be voted out at the next election. This takes place without violence or conflict. In the election just held the Coalition government had been in power for over nine years. At the last election three years ago, a change was predicted but the Coalition was able to win and retain office. This time there was a big swing against the Coalition, especially in WA which had been criticised by the Prime Minister for its protective approach to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also lost some previously safe seats to Independents. Even Labour lost a safe seat to an Independent for parachuting in someone from outside the local area. Labour’s primary vote was down but they won the election due to preferences. The big change was the extent of people voting for the Greens and the rise of Independents. This is likely to be a continuing factor in Australian political life to which the major parties need to adjust.
In my view it was time for a change. When any government is in power for a considerable time, they can lose touch with the people and assume they have the right to govern. A democratic form of government allows for the peaceful transition of power to other people. This has taken place and Labour now needs to prove its worth by making good on its promises. It has to show it can govern the country responsibly as well as introducing some progressive developments, such as in relation to aged care, child care and Medicare, as well as re-establishing better relationships with our Pacific partners.
While the major parties did not give much attention to the issue of climate change, this was a focus for the Greens and the Independents. It has even been called by some “the climate change election”. There is the expectation that climate change will be addressed with much stronger action than that taken by the previous government. Labour does have a better plan and the Greens and Independents will want the transition away from fossil fuels and to renewables to be a priority. It will be very unfortunate to have a change of government and still see new coal and gas mines opened. There are now people in the parliament itself who will push for climate action, not just in organizations such as Greenpeace and the Australian Conservation Foundation, who are outside the major parties. Australia has in fact the potential to benefit from the transition to renewable energy.
We also need prophetic figures who highlight injustices and call for a better, fairer future. Martin Luther King Jr did this in regard to race relations in the USA. He gave himself unstintingly to achieve a better future for black people and for an American society that was more like what God desired for the nation. Desmond Tutu consistently spoke out against apartheid and assisted the transition to a new era in South Africa under Nelson Mandela by heading up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
In our Australian context, the prophetic figures are not necessarily Christian figures, though there are those as well. Grace Tame has drawn attention to domestic and family violence. Indigenous leaders met in 2017 at Uluru and produced the “Uluru Statement from the Heart”. It calls for a First Nation’s Voice in the government and a Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making and truth-telling about our Australian history. The new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he will respond positively to the Uluru Statement and the new Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney has it as a top priority for her to work on. It was pleasing to see that the leaders of the various faith communities in Australia endorsed the Uluru Statement and urged the politicians to follow through on it. These included Catholic, Uniting and Anglican churches along with Australian Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus, nine faith groups in all. It was a great show of unity on this issue recognizing that Australia will not become the nation it could be without reconciliation with its indigenous people and acknowledgement of past injustices.
What about Jesus? When he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They answered, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets” (Mark 8:27-30). Note that all these people were regarded as prophets. Jesus, however, was more than a prophet. John’s gospel has John the Baptist refer to Jesus as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” He also calls Jesus the “Son of God”. Jesus proclaimed the coming kingdom of God and demonstrated it through his speaking and actions. He taught about the reign of God particularly through parables. His actions of healing and exorcism showed that God’s Spirit was at work in him bringing healing and wholeness to people’s lives. Like a prophet he challenged the leaders of his nation to accept his message and change. Instead, they had him crucified. The resurrection was God’s validation of Jesus.
Our deepest need is to have our sin, our selfish self-orientation, forgiven and find true life reconciled with God. We are to seek God’s purposes for the world which is that it might be renewed and transformed to be closer to God’s kingdom. We need politicians and prophets. Above all we need Jesus, our Saviour and Lord.

정치가, 선지자 그리고 예수

호주에서 우리는 운 좋게도 안정적인 민주주의 국가에서 살고 있다. 정당이 국민이 만족할 만한 성과를 내지 못하면 다음 선거에서 표결될 수 있다. 이것은 폭력이나 갈등 없이 진행된다. 방금 열린 선거에서 연립정부는 9년 넘게 집권했다. 3년 전 지난 총선에서 변화가 예고됐지만 연립정부가 승리해 집권을 유지할 수 있었다. 이번에는 COVID-19 대유행에 대한 보호적 접근에 대해 총리가 비판한 WA에서 큰 움직임이 있었다. 그들은 또한 무소속에게 이전에 안전한 자리를 잃었다. 노동당조차도 지역 외부에서 누군가를 낙하산으로 몰아 무소속에게 안전한 자리를 잃었다. 노동당의 예비 투표는 떨어졌지만 선호도 덕분에 선거에서 승리했다. 가장 큰 변화는 녹색당에 투표하는 사람들의 범위와 무소속의 부상이었다. 이는 주요 정당이 적응해야 하는 호주 정치 생활의 지속적인 요인이 될 가능성이 높다.
제 생각에는 변화가 필요한 때다. 어떤 정부든 상당한 시간 동안 집권하면 국민과 연락이 끊기고 자신이 통치할 권리가 있다고 생각할 수 있다. 민주적 형태의 정부는 권력을 다른 사람들에게 평화롭게 넘길 수 있다. 이것은 이루어졌고 노동당은 이제 약속을 지킴으로써 그 가치를 증명해야 한다. 국가를 책임감 있게 통치할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 노인 돌봄, 보육 및 메디케어와 같은 일부 진보적인 발전을 도입하고 태평양 파트너와 더 나은 관계를 다시 구축할 수 있음을 보여주어야 한다.

Grace Tame은 가정 폭력과 가정 폭력에 주목했다. 2017년 울루루에서 원주민 지도자들이 만나 “마음에서 우러나오는 울루루 성명서”를 제작했다. 그것은 정부의 First Nation’s Voice와 호주 역사에 대한 합의 형성 및 진실 말하기 과정을 감독할 위원회를 요구한다. Anthony Albanese 신임 총리는 울룰루 성명에 긍정적으로 대응할 것이라고 밝혔으며, 린다 버니 신임 원주민 장관은 이를 최우선 과제로 삼고 있다. 호주의 다양한 신앙 공동체의 지도자들이 울룰루 선언문을 지지하고 정치인들이 이를 따를 것을 촉구하는 모습은 기뻤다. 여기에는 오스트레일리아 시크교도, 불교도, 힌두교도와 함께 가톨릭, 연합, 성공회 교회가 포함되어 있으며 모두 9개의 종교 단체다. 호주가 원주민과의 화해와 과거의 불의에 대한 인식 없이는 국가가 될 수 없다는 점을 인식한 이 문제에 대한 훌륭한 단합의 표시였다.
예수님은 어떻습니까? 제자들에게 “사람들이 나를 누구라 하느냐?”고 물으셨을 때 그들이 대답했다. “세례 요한; 그리고 다른 사람들, 엘리야; 더러는 선지자 중의 하나라”(막 8:27-30). 이 모든 사람들이 선지자로 간주되었음을 주목하자. 그러나 예수님은 선지자 그 이상이었다. 요한복음에는 세례 요한이 예수님을 가리켜 “세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린양”이라고 했다. 그는 또한 예수님을 “하느님의 아들”이라고 부른다. 예수님은 임할 하나님의 나라를 선포하시고 말씀과 행동으로 그 나라를 보여 주셨다. 그는 특히 비유를 통해 하나님의 통치에 대해 가르쳤다. 그의 치유와 퇴마 행위는 하나님의 영이 사람들의 삶에 치유와 온전함을 가져다주는 그 안에서 역사하고 있음을 보여주었다. 그는 선지자처럼 자신의 메시지와 변화를 받아들이도록 조국의 지도자들에게 도전했다. 오히려 그들은 그를 십자가에 못 박았다. 부활은 예수님에 대한 하나님의 검증이었다.
우리의 가장 깊은 필요는 우리의 죄, 우리의 이기적인 자기 지향을 용서받고 하나님과 화목한 참된 삶을 찾는 것이다. 우리는 세상을 새롭게 하고 변화시켜 하나님의 나라에 더 가까이 가게 하려는 하나님의 목적을 구해야 한다. 정치인과 선지자가 필요하다. 무엇보다도 우리의 구주이시며 주님이신 예수님이 필요하다.
