Truth and Civil Society
I am concerned that truth is no longer valued as it should be and this is a danger for the functioning of civil society. We have seen this especially with Donald Trump in the USA and in regard to the Referendum for a Voice to Parliament in Australia. Misinformation, unfortunately, is listened to especially when loudly and repeatedly asserted. The use of social media comes into this. I will outline my thoughts on this.
While misinformation and raising doubt has been going on for some time, such as in relation to human caused climate change on the part of fossil fuel companies, the rise of Donal Trump has exacerbated it. What I am especially concerned about is that in the USA, a democratic civil society that claims to be a world leader, truth is not the priority for much of the news reporting. Gaining attention, opinion and entertainment are more important. Trump has benefitted from reality television for that is how he operates. It is a matter of gaining attention, using misleading tactics and appealing to ill-informed people to get them to support him.
The lack of accountability on the part of people such as Donald Trump is worrying. Donald Trump’s rejection of the result of the last US election which he said it was stolen, led to the storming of the capitol in Washington DC on 6 January 2021. The key leaders have been sentenced but Donal Trump himself has not been called to account despite inciting the riotous events of that day. He has been found guilty of greatly overestimating his wealth for the sake of gaining loans to increase his wealth. Truth is not important to him, just his own self-interest. Yet he continues to have considerable support among conservative Americans many of whom still believe him about the last election being stolen. He is the Republican party’s most likely candidate. He asserts popular slogans and the Republicans are so desirous of getting into power again they are likely to endorse him. There are various legal charges being made against him but the US system is such that it is unlikely he will face anything serious. If there are any matters that do against him, he can appeal to the Supreme Court as he has previously appointed people so that the majority are conservatives who will support him. The publicity is to his political advantage as he can claim to be victimised. He can asset that Democratic Biden supporters are using their positions to try to undermine him.
The level of political debate is appalling. Truth does not matter. Carefully developed policies do not matter. Self-assertion, superficial claims and personal attacks prevail. Influential conservative news outlets such as those of Rupert Murdoch supported Trump in 2016 and under Murdoch’s son Lachlan, who has recently taken over leadership of the media empire, are likely to do so again.
Australia has just had a referendum, the first since 1999, on a voice to parliament for First Nations people. It seemed straightforward to me. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived in Australia for over 60,000 years. They are the oldest living culture. That surely means something, especially given how badly they have been treated since colonisation. The referendum was about recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and setting up a committee to give advice to Parliament. The voice was to be advisory concerning matters to do with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people such as health, education and housing. Yet the No campaign clearly succeeded. It used misinformation and fear to achieve its negative ends. Yes23 campaign director Dean Parkin singled out what he called the No camp’s “largest misinformation campaign that this country has ever seen”.
The No campaign deliberately politicised the debate. Instead of just focusing on the wording of the Referendum, it raised other matters to discredit the Yes campaign. It claimed that giving a voice to First Nations people would divide the nation on the basis of race. It held that to give a voice in parliament to aboriginal people would give undue power to those involved. It falsely suggested that people’s properties and public property would be at risk of being taken over. It implied that financial claims were sure to be made. There was the goal, it seems to me, to gain attention for the most prominent nay sayers and for the Liberal Party which would like to be back in power. I doubt that defeating the Referendum will transfer into more votes for the Liberal-National Coalition at the next election. Social media as well as conventional media were used extensively to promote misleading information in the hope that if doubt is sown, then people will vote No. All this succeeded especially in multicultural suburbs and regional areas.
This lack of focusing on the truth and fair debate are not desirable for the functioning of civil society. My desire is for a more compassionate, just and peaceful society for all. That requires listening to the experts and carefully evaluating recommendations and policies. Those most closely affected should be especially listened to as their experience is important to finding the best way forward. This does not mean a lack of vigorous debate. People can disagree but the focus should be on sound reasoning, not misinformation and misleading statements. People can agree to disagree while still showing respect to others.
As a Christian such an approach is incumbent upon us. The prophets of ancient Israel called for justice and compassion, especially for the poor and marginalised. Jesus expected people to be honest and sincere. He said, “Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No.’” We are to be clear about what we affirm or disagree with but not embellish our words (Matthew 5:37). Paul encouraged people to focus on “whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable” (Philippians 4:8). Civil society will benefit from those who adhere to this approach.

진실에 초점을 맞추지 않고 토론하는 것은 시민사회의 기능에 바람직하지 않습니다. 나의 소망은 모두를 위해 더욱 자비롭고 정의롭고 평화로운 사회를 만드는 것입니다. 이를 위해서는 전문가의 의견을 경청하고 권장 사항과 정책을 신중하게 평가해야 합니다. 가장 밀접하게 영향을 받은 사람들의 경험은 앞으로 최선의 방법을 찾는 데 중요하므로 특히 경청해야 합니다. 그렇다고 해서 활발한 토론이 부족하다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 사람들은 동의하지 않을 수 있지만 잘못된 정보나 오해의 소지가 있는 진술이 아니라 건전한 추론에 초점을 맞춰야 합니다. 사람들은 다른 사람들을 존중하면서도 동의하지 않는다는 데 동의할 수 있습니다.
그리스도인으로서 그러한 접근 방식은 우리의 의무입니다. 고대 이스라엘의 선지자들은 특히 가난하고 소외된 사람들을 위해 정의와 동정심을 요구했습니다. 예수께서는 사람들이 정직하고 진실하기를 기대하셨습니다. 그분은 “너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 우리가 긍정하는 것과 반대하는 것을 분명히 해야 하지만 우리의 말을 꾸며서는 안 됩니다(마태복음 5:37). 바울은 사람들에게 “무엇에든지 참되며 무엇에든지 경건하며 무엇에든지 옳으며 무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 기쁘며 무엇에든지 칭찬할 만한 것”(빌 4:8)에 집중하라고 권면했습니다. 시민사회는 이러한 접근법을 고수하는 사람들로부터 이익을 얻을 것입니다.
