Who is watching us?
The Australian government has become aware that Chinese cameras installed in government buildings could be used for spying purposes by the Chinese government. Hence, they will be replaced – over 900 cameras. The world is now a place with cameras everywhere. We are being watched by CCTV cameras, by internet giants such as Google and Facebook who gain information about us for advertising purposes, by hackers seeking access to our credit cards and bank accounts. What do we make of all this surveillance? There are positives but also negatives about being watched.
The positive side is that surveillance cameras can be used to deter or detect criminal activity. When I watch murder mystery series on television, a standard practice is for the police to obtain CCTV footage to find people. We now also have the possibility of having face recognition cameras which police would be glad to have installed and have access to. Our medical records are now computerised and having that information about our health record readily available could be helpful if we have a medical emergency. Personal details are required by the government, banks and businesses and are stored for their use. They are used to confirm who we are especially in relation to financial matters.
The negative side is also apparent. My local swimming pool has to have a sign to tell people not to take photos in the change rooms. With smart phones also being excellent cameras, there is the danger of not only filming people against their wishes but also posting the photos on social media. Last year I foolishly got taken in by a scam. My computer had a problem and I thought it was Microsoft I had contacted but instead it was a sophisticated fraud scam. As I did what the person suggested, they could see what I was doing. Fortunately, I did not lose much money which my bank was later able to reimburse. I now have much greater awareness of how scammers work and have much more protection on my computer and in relation to my banking.
On a larger scale we had hackers gaining access to people’s personal information from large organisations such Medicare, Woolworths and Telstra and posting some of the information. Governments have to be aware of spying which is now less a matter of people being agents in other nations than hackers getting into governmental computers and finding confidential information.
We all do like to be both noticed and have our privacy. We want other people to acknowledge us but also to be able to withdraw when we need to do so. Apparently, a big development in the social media space was when the “like” capacity was developed for Facebook. Suddenly not only could people post comments and pictures but could see how many people “liked” what they posted.
Privacy is another matter. While there are now intercoms at the entrance to high rise home units, privacy as indicated above is less than ever. Often, we do not even realise who has information about us. When I bought a pair of shoes online from a particular brand, advertising for that brand started coming up on my computer when I checked the weather report! If I go to pay something online by credit card, the company may have my number already. Recently there was a transaction on my credit card that could not be explained as it was a purchase from a furniture company in the USA. I contacted the bank which resulted in stopping my credit card and being issued with a new one. The bank reimbursed me for the amount. It did mean having to do without a credit card until the new one arrived.
The problem with being watched has to do with the trustworthiness of those people who are watching us. Sometimes we can be assured people will do the right thing but there are others who want to take advantage of us as they seek to gain access to our information. Internet fraud is now a huge concern. How much information we want government and organisations to have about us is an issue.
The Bible speaks of God watching over us. The psalmist says,
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me, You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away….
Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle in the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand will lead me and your right hand shall hold me fast” (Psalm 139:1-2, 7-10).
Note that God is not like some authoritarian ruler who watches us in order to control us. Rather God is like a loving parent who is concerned for us and wants to know how we are going and offers guidance when needed.
Jesus trusted God fully confident in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. Jesus tells us not to worry about our life, about food and drink or clothing for example. In the Sermon on the Mount, he points out how God cares for birds and lilies. He says, “For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these (material) things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:32-33).
It is a matter of priority. Jesus tells us to be concerned first of all about God’s reign of love and justice and to live righteously. Material concerns are of secondary importance. Yet so often they come to dominate. It is God we are to serve not money or our own self-interest. God is looking on for God cares for our well-being. We can trust God who wants the best for us and watches over us.

프라이버시는 또 다른 문제입니다. 현재 고층 주택 입구에 인터콤이 있지만 위에 표시된 대로 프라이버시는 그 어느 때보다 적습니다. 종종 우리는 누가 우리에 대한 정보를 가지고 있는지조차 깨닫지 못합니다. 특정 브랜드에서 온라인으로 신발 한 켤레를 구입했을 때, 날씨 예보를 확인했을 때 해당 브랜드에 대한 광고가 내 컴퓨터에 나타나기 시작했습니다! 온라인에서 신용카드로 결제하려고 하면 회사에서 이미 내 번호를 가지고 있을 수 있습니다. 최근 미국에 있는 가구 회사에서 구매했기 때문에 설명할 수 없는 내 신용 카드 거래가 있었습니다. 은행에 연락했더니 신용카드가 정지되고 새 카드가 발급되었습니다. 은행에서 그 금액을 갚았습니다. 새 카드가 도착할 때까지 신용 카드 없이 지내야 한다는 의미였습니다.
감시당하는 것의 문제는 우리를 감시하는 사람들의 신뢰성과 관련이 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 사람들이 옳은 일을 할 것이라고 확신할 수 있지만 우리 정보에 액세스하려고 할 때 우리를 이용하려는 다른 사람들이 있습니다. 인터넷 사기는 이제 큰 관심사입니다. 정부와 조직이 우리에 대해 얼마나 많은 정보를 얻기를 원하는지가 문제입니다.
성경은 하나님께서 우리를 지켜보신다고 말합니다. 시편 기자는 말합니다.
“여호와여 주께서 나를 살피사 아셨으니 내가 앉고 일어섬을 아시며 멀리서도 내 생각을 분별하시나이다.
당신의 영에서 내가 어디로 갈 수 있습니까? 내가 주의 앞에서 어디로 피하리이까? 내가 하늘에 올라갈지라도 거기 계시며 스올에 내 자리를 펴도 거기 계시니이다. 내가 새벽 날개를 치며 바다 끝에 가서 거할지라도 거기서도 주의 손이 나를 인도하시며 주의 오른손이 나를 붙드시리이다”(시 139:1-2, 7-10).
하나님은 우리를 통제하기 위해 우리를 감시하는 어떤 권위적인 통치자와 같지 않다는 점에 유의해야 합니다. 오히려 하나님은 우리를 염려하고 우리가 어떻게 가고 있는지 알고 싶어하며 필요할 때 지침을 제공하는 사랑 많은 부모와 같습니다.
예수님은 하나님의 변함없는 사랑과 신실하심을 온전히 확신하며 하나님을 신뢰하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리의 생명을 위하여 예를 들면 먹고 마시는 것과 의복을 위하여 염려하지 말라고 말씀하십니다. 산상 수훈에서 그는 하나님께서 어떻게 새와 백합을 돌보시는지 지적합니다. “이 모든 (물질적인) 것을 구하는 것은 이방인들이니 참으로 너희 천부께서 이 모든 것이 너희에게 있어야 할 줄을 아시느니라. 오직 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 위하여 힘쓰라”(마 6:32-33).
우선 순위의 문제입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 사랑과 정의의 통치를 먼저 생각하고 의롭게 살라고 말씀하십니다. 물질적 문제는 이차적으로 중요합니다. 그러나 너무나 자주 그들 (물질적인 것)은 지배하기 위해 옵니다. 우리가 섬겨야 할 대상은 돈이나 우리 자신의 이익이 아니라 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 우리의 안녕을 돌보십니다. 우리는 우리에게 가장 좋은 것을 원하시고 우리를 지켜보시는 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
