Why God?
I heard an ABC program with an English philosopher. He spoke about the big questions that philosophy and religion deal with such as: what is the meaning of life, what kind of person do I want to be, what do I want to do with my life? These are basic questions for us as humans. From my Christian perspective God is central to the responses. I will explain why.
I will put it in the negative. Without God no-one is watching and no-one is waiting. We are on our own and when life ends that is it. We cease to exist. There is no life beyond death. There is no God who cares for us and how we live. There is no God who will receive us when we die with the hope of future life in God’s realm with others who have gone before us.
What is the meaning of life? Life gains meaning by being involved in meaningful relationships and activities. Meaningful relationships are ones in which we are loved and in turn we love others. Primary are family relationships but also friendships and relationships with colleagues and others we have connections with. While we live in an individualistic culture, most people continue to place family at the centre of their values. Friends and other people are also important to our sense that life is meaningful. Work provides not only money to live on but also purpose. Recreational activities are significant for many people.
For Christians, we hold that God is the most important relationship to have. God is our Creator who cares for us. While family may let us down, God never does. While friends can come and go, God is always faithful. Work and recreational activities can be less than fulfilling or come to an end. Seeking to serve God’s reign always has value and never ends, though what we do changes as we age. God is central because God loves us and wants the best for and from us. God readily forgives us when we fail, and renews us so we can move forward again without guilt.
As Christians we know this of God because of the revelation given to us in Jesus Christ. As God’s Son, Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God. Jesus, as the Son of God, knows God like none other. As we look to him and learn from him, we see how we are meant to live. We are to live loving God wholeheartedly and loving our neighbours as ourselves. That is how Jesus lived and died and that is how we best live also. Life is given meaning as we follow the way of Jesus and serve God’s reign like he did. That does not necessarily mean a successful life in worldly terms. Jesus was not successful in the sense of gaining wealth and living a long life. He died an excruciating death out of commitment to God’s reign and out of love for us. The power of sin and death in this life are strong. We only have to look at oppressive regimes, greedy corporations and unjust systems to realise this. Death, however, was not the end for Jesus. God raised him from death and he is now at the right hand of God to use symbolic language.
Following Jesus is the best way to live for it does give meaning to our lives. It calls on us to use our life not only for our own benefit but also for the common good. That common good is not restricted to people like us, such as people of the same nation or ethnicity, but is for the good of all people. Christians hold that all are made in the image of God, all have intrinsic value, and are to be given opportunities to make the most of their lives. This applies particularly to the least, such as the poor, those with disabilities, those who are treated unfairly by the current social system. The God Jesus portrayed had a particular concern for the least and those who suffered. Jesus wanted all to experience wholeness and to participate in society in meaningful ways, knowing God’s love.
Jesus calls us to be people of integrity who live by faith, hope and love. He wants us to know God and live out of relationship with God. Jesus taught us to pray, recognising God is like a loving Father who is to be honoured. We are to seek God’s kingdom on earth as in heaven, in God’s fulfilled reign. We can pray for our daily needs, and appreciate that if we are to be forgiven our sins then we should be ready to forgive others their sins also. Trails and evil are a reality in this life. We can pray to get through trials and be delivered from evil from without and evil we can become complicit with. As we do so we recognise that we are not alone in life, facing its changes and challenges. God is with us. Jesus can guide us. God’s Spirit can assist us.
This trinitarian understanding of God is helpful and important to appreciate. God is not only our Creator who watches over us and cares for us. God sent his Son Jesus to be with us and to experience our life. Hence, we can be confident that God does know what we are going through for God’s Son has experienced the highs and lows of life, even to the point of death on a cross. We do not only have our own strength to rely on or the help of others, we also have the enabling of the Holy Spirit to strengthen us. The Spirit would provide comfort in times of sorrow, guidance when we are uncertain, and enabling when we feel unable to go on.
Why God? Because God, Father, Son and Spirit, provides meaning, purpose and assurance to us wanting us to mature in life, serving God and others.

부정적으로 말씀드리겠습니다. 하나님이 없다면 아무도 지켜보지 않고 기다리지 않습니다. 우리는 혼자이며 인생이 끝나면 끝입니다. 우리는 존재하지 않습니다. 죽음 너머의 삶은 없습니다. 우리와 우리가 사는 방식을 돌보시는 신은 없습니다. 우리보다 먼저 간 다른 사람들과 함께 신의 영역에서 미래의 삶을 희망하며 죽을 때 우리를 받아줄 신은 없습니다.
삶의 의미는 무엇인가? 삶은 의미 있는 관계와 활동에 참여함으로써 의미를 얻습니다. 의미 있는 관계는 우리가 사랑받고 그에 따라 다른 사람을 사랑하는 관계입니다. 가장 중요한 것은 가족 관계이지만 동료 및 우리가 연결되어 있는 다른 사람들과의 우정과 관계도 있습니다. 우리는 개인주의 문화에 살고 있지만, 대부분의 사람들은 여전히 가족을 가치관의 중심에 두고 있습니다. 친구와 다른 사람들도 우리의 삶에 의미 있는 감각에 중요합니다. 일은 생활비를 제공할 뿐만 아니라 목적을 제공합니다. 많은 사람들에게 여가 활동은 중요합니다.
그리스도인에게 있어서 우리는 하나님이 가장 중요한 관계라고 생각합니다. 하나님은 우리를 돌보시는 창조주이십니다. 가족은 우리를 실망시킬 수 있지만, 하나님은 결코 실망시키지 않습니다. 친구는 오고 갈 수 있지만, 하나님은 항상 신실하십니다. 일과 여가 활동은 만족스럽지 않거나 끝날 수 있습니다. 하나님의 통치를 섬기고자 하는 것은 항상 가치가 있으며 결코 끝나지 않습니다. 하지만 나이가 들면서 우리가 하는 일은 바뀝니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시고 우리에게서 최선을 원하시기 때문에 하나님이 중심에 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 실패할 때 기꺼이 용서하시고, 죄책감 없이 다시 나아갈 수 있도록 우리를 새롭게 하십니다.
그리스도인으로서 우리는 예수 그리스도 안에서 우리에게 주어진 계시 때문에 하나님에 대해 이것을 압니다. 하나님의 아들로서 예수님은 보이지 않는 하나님의 보이는 형상입니다. 하나님의 아들로서 예수님은 다른 누구와도 비교할 수 없이 하나님을 아십니다. 우리가 그를 바라보고 그에게서 배우면서 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는지 알게 됩니다. 우리는 온 마음을 다해 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 우리 자신처럼 사랑하며 살아야 합니다. 그것이 바로 예수께서 살고 죽으신 방식이고 우리가 가장 잘 사는 방식이기도 합니다. 우리가 예수님의 길을 따르고 그가 한 것처럼 하나님의 통치를 섬길 때 삶에 의미가 주어집니다. 그것은 반드시 세상적인 관점에서 성공적인 삶을 의미하지는 않습니다. 예수께서는 부를 얻고 오래 사는 의미에서 성공하지 않으셨습니다. 그는 하나님의 통치에 대한 헌신과 우리에 대한 사랑으로 인해 고통스러운 죽음을 맞으셨습니다. 이 세상에서 죄와 죽음의 권세는 강력합니다. 우리는 압제적인 정권, 탐욕스러운 기업, 불의한 제도를 보면 이것을 깨닫습니다. 그러나 죽음은 예수님에게 끝이 아니었습니다. 하나님께서는 그를 죽음에서 살리셨고 그는 상징적인 언어를 사용하여 지금 하나님의 오른편에 계십니다.
예수님을 따르는 것은 우리 삶에 의미를 부여하기 때문에 가장 좋은 삶의 방식입니다. 그것은 우리에게 우리 자신의 이익뿐만 아니라 공동의 이익을 위해 우리의 삶을 사용하도록 요구합니다. 그 공동선은 우리와 같은 사람들, 즉 같은 국가나 민족에 속한 사람들에게만 국한되지 않고 모든 사람의 선을 위한 것입니다. 그리스도인들은 모든 사람이 하나님의 형상으로 만들어졌으며, 모든 사람이 고유한 가치를 가지고 있으며, 삶을 최대한 활용할 수 있는 기회를 제공받아야 한다고 생각합니다. 이는 특히 가난한 사람, 장애인, 현 사회 시스템에서 부당한 대우를 받는 사람과 같이 가장 작은 사람들에게 적용됩니다. 예수께서 묘사하신 하나님은 가장 작은 사람들과 고통받는 사람들에게 특별한 관심을 가지고 계셨습니다. 예수께서는 모든 사람이 온전함을 경험하고 의미 있는 방식으로 사회에 참여하며 하나님의 사랑을 알기를 원하셨습니다.
예수께서는 우리가 믿음, 소망, 사랑으로 사는 정직한 사람이 되라고 부르십니다. 그는 우리가 하나님을 알고 하나님과의 관계에서 살기를 원하십니다. 예수께서는 우리에게 기도하는 법을 가르치셨고, 하나님은 영광을 받으셔야 할 사랑하는 아버지와 같다는 것을 인정하셨습니다. 우리는 하나님의 완전한 통치에서 하늘에서와 같이 땅에서도 하나님의 왕국을 추구해야 합니다. 우리는 매일의 필요를 위해 기도할 수 있으며, 우리의 죄를 용서받으려면 다른 사람의 죄도 용서할 준비가 되어 있어야 한다는 것을 인식할 수 있습니다. 이 삶에서 시련과 악은 현실입니다. 우리는 시련을 이겨내고 외부의 악으로부터 구원받기 위해 기도할 수 있으며, 우리는 악에 공모할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 하면서 우리는 삶에서 혼자가 아니며 변화와 도전에 직면해 있다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다. 예수님은 우리를 인도하실 수 있습니다. 하나님의 영은 우리를 도울 수 있습니다.
하나님에 대한 이 삼위일체적 이해는 도움이 되고 감사하는 것이 중요합니다. 하나님은 우리를 지켜보고 돌보시는 창조주일 뿐만 아니라, 우리와 함께 하시고 우리의 삶을 경험하게 하려고 그의 아들 예수님을 보내셨습니다. 따라서 우리는 하나님께서 우리가 겪고 있는 일을 알고 계시다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 아들은 십자가에서 죽는 순간까지 인생의 기복을 경험하셨기 때문입니다. 우리는 의지할 수 있는 우리 자신의 힘이나 다른 사람들의 도움이 있을 뿐만 아니라, 우리를 강화시켜 줄 성령의 능력도 있습니다. 성령은 슬픔의 시간에 위로를 주시고, 불확실할 때 인도를 주시고, 계속할 수 없다고 느낄 때 능력을 주십니다.
왜 하나님인가요? 하나님, 곧 성부, 성자, 성령께서 우리에게 의미, 목적, 확신을 주셔서 우리가 삶에서 성숙하고 하나님과 다른 사람들을 섬기기를 원하시기 때문입니다.
