그분은 어디 계십니까?
중동에서 그리스도를 어디에서 찾을 수 있을까요? 지금 중동은 미국과 이스라엘의 공격을 받는 이란으로 인해 전쟁터가 되었습니다. 미사일과 드론이 여러 나라에 파괴적인 공격을 퍼붓고 있습니다.
부활하시고 십자가에 못 박히신 그분은 전쟁 지휘실에 계시지도, 무기를 축복하시지도, 적을 비난하시지도 않습니다. 그분은 권력을 장악하려는 유혹에 빠지셨을 때, 그리고 제자들이 서로에게 화를 냈을 때에도, 그러한 미혹을 단호히 거부하시고 책망하셨습니다.
“너희는 이방인들 가운데서는 자기들이 인정하는 지도자들이 백성을 지배하고, 그들의 높은 자들은 폭군처럼 군림하는 것을 알고 있다. 그러나 너희는 그렇지 않다. 너희 가운데서 누구든지 크게 되고자 하는 자는 먼저 너희를 섬기는 자가 되어야 한다.” (막 10:42-43)
평화의 왕의 나라는 어디에 있습니까? 중동에서는 핵무기 사용에 대한 깊은 두려움이 권력 정치, 선전, 그리고 수 세기 동안 혼란을 겪어온 지도자들의 평판과 얽혀 있습니다. 이 혼돈 속에서 공격자와 방어자는 자신들이 성전에서 하나님의 대리인이라고 주장합니다. 기독교 국가, 유대 국가, 이슬람 국가는 각기 다른 버전의 ‘하나님의 계획’을 믿고 살아갑니다. 그러나 예수님은 이러한 주장들을 결코 받아들이지 않으셨습니다. 그는 하나님의 계획이라는 이름으로 자신을 악한 적으로 거부한 자들의 손에 죽임을 당하셨습니다. 그렇다면 하나님의 임재는 어디에 있는 것일까요?
예수 그리스도는 “어린아이들을 보라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님 나라는 어린아이들이 받아들이듯 받아들여야 합니다. 하나님의 나라에 마음을 열어놓은 사람들은 바로 어린아이들입니다. 그분은 바로 그곳에 계십니다. 그분은 이 전쟁 속에서 고통받는 아이들과 함께하십니다. 테헤란의 학교는 미사일에 파괴되었고, 가자 지구에서는 아이들이 고아가 되었으며, 이스라엘에서는 아이들이 방공호에서 목숨을 잃었습니다. 예수님은 가족들이 상실과 파괴에 충격과 슬픔에 잠긴 곳에 함께하십니다.
예수님은 수많은 공동체의 삶이 산산이 조각난 곳에 계십니다. 천막촌이 생겨나고 퍼져나가는 곳에, 굶주리고 목마르고 병들고 헐벗고 감옥에 갇힌 자들이 있는 곳에 계십니다. 권력자들이 자신들의 계획을 위해 어쩔 수 없이 감수해야 한다고 주장하는 부수적 피해자들과 함께 계십니다.
예수님은 총격과 살육을 멈추게 할 방법을 찾으려 애쓰는 평화주의자들이 있는 곳에 계십니다. 망설임과 불확실성 속에서 유혈 사태를 막을 다른 길을 희망의 눈으로 바라보는 사람들, 공포와 슬픔 속에서도 총격을 멈추고, 폭탄을 설치하지 않고, 드론을 작동시키지 않을 방법을 간절히 찾는 사람들, 그들이 있는 곳에 계십니다.
예수님은 전쟁과 역사, 주장과 반박, 정당화와 부정의 안개 속에서 길을 잃은 진실을 찾는 사람들이 있는 곳에 계십니다. 사람과 나라가 어떻게 자기 눈에 있는 들보를 발견할 수 있을까요? 무엇이 진실이고 무엇이 의견이나 선전이 아닐까요?
그는 권력의 전당을 거닐지 않고, 사람들이 그에게 찾아오는 뒷길을 걸었습니다. 지금도 그렇습니다. 그는 하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔다고 말했습니다. 권력과 통제와 심판을 버리고, 하나님의 샬롬 안에서 생명과 소망과 치유를 가져오는 하나님의 나라 길을 찾으십시오. 우리는 과연 그의 말씀을 듣게 될까요?
Where is He?
Where would we find the Christ in the Middle East? It is now a war zone with Iran attacked by the United States and Israel. Missiles and drones rain devastation on many different countries.
The risen crucified one is not in the war room, or blessing the armaments, or denouncing the enemy. He renounced and spoke against this sort of delusion in the temptations presented to him to take control and in his response to his disciples’ anger when they were angry with each other.
You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognise as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must become your servant. (Mk 10:42,43)
Where is this kingdom of the Prince of peace? In the Midde East deep fears about the use of nuclear weapons are caught up in power politics, propaganda and the reputation of leaders in a place that has known turmoil for centuries. in the chaos attackers and defenders claim they are God’s agents in a holy war. A Christian nation, and a Jewish nation and a Moslem nation each live with their particular version of ‘God’s plan’. Jesus will have none of these claims. He died at the hands of those who in the name of God’s plan rejected him as an evil enemy. Where then is God’s presence found?
Jesus Christ said, ‘Look to the children’. The kingdom has to be received like children receive it. It is the children who are open to his kingdom. They are where he is found. He stands with the children who are suffering in this warfare. A missile obliterated a school in Tehran, children are orphaned in Gaza, and children are killed in bomb shelters in Israel. Jesus stands in places where families are shocked and stunned by loss and devastation.
Jesus is found where the lives of so many communities have been ripped asunder. He is there where tent cities spring up and spread. He is discovered where there are the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, the naked, those in gaol. He is found with those who are seen as collateral damage that the powerful claim has to be accepted for the sake of their plan.
Jesus is found where there are peacemakers who are attempting to find a way for the shooting and the killing to stop. Those who have hopeful eyes that look for where hesitation and uncertainty open up other ways to stop the bloodshed. They wait with the adrenalin of horror and an ever-present grief, searching patiently to find how the shooting could stop, the bombs not be loaded, and the drones not programmed.
He is there where there is a search for the truth of the issue lost in the fog of war, history, claims and counterclaims, justification and repudiation. How do people and nations discover the log that is in their own eye? What is really fact and not opinion or propaganda?
He did not walk in the halls of power, but on the backroads where people came to him. He still does. He said that the kingdom of God is near – renounce your power and control and judgement. Find the kingdom way to bring life and hope and healing of God’s shalom instead. Will we ever hear?
