지그와 재그
나는 내가 무엇을 할지 계획하는 걸 좋아한다. 잔디를 어떻게 깎을지, 출근길 운전을 어떻게 할지, 기차 안에서 무엇을 할지. 하루가 어떻게 흘러갈지에 대한 단기적인 계획이다. 머릿속에 그려진 그림이 실제로 일어나기 전부터 존재한다. 그리고 대부분은 그 계획대로 흘러간다.
몇 년 전, 내 삶을 장기적인 관점에서 평가하는 과정을 요구하는 한 교육을 받았다. 실습 과제가 있었는데, 수십 년에 걸친 자신의 삶을 예술 작품으로 표현하는 것이었다. 나는 무엇을 해야 할까? 이 과제는 나에게 완전히 새로운 영역이었다. 건축업자의 아들로서, 결국 나는 파리망(fly screen)에 털실을 이용해 내 인생의 방향 변화를 표현할 수 있겠다는 아이디어를 떠올렸다. 굵은 털실을 파리망에 곧게 꿰다가 인생의 큰 변화가 있을 때마다 새로운 방향으로 꺾어 나갔다.
놀랍게도 내 인생에는 계속된 지그재그가 있었다. 대부분의 방향 전환은 계획되지 않은 채 갑작스럽게 찾아왔다. 무언가가 일어났고, 그것은 거의 내 계획의 결과가 아니라 예상치 못한 곳에서 온 것이었다. 이 거칠고 임시방편 같은 태피스트리(Tapestry)는 변화의 지점을 강조했고, 내 삶에 큰 영향을 준 핵심 사건들을 더 깊이 들여다보게 만들었다. 그것은 다시 방향을 잡고, 새롭게 하고, 재평가하고, 목적을 재정립하고, 다시 바라보는 시간으로 이끌었다. 그리고 가장 중요한 변화가 무엇이었는지는 너무나도 분명했다! 그것은 갑작스럽게, 예상치 못하게 찾아왔고, 새로운 길을 열어주었다.
그 순간을 나는 또렷이 기억한다. 도시로 운전하던 중 예수님의 세례에 대해 생각하고 있었다. 복음서들은 예수께서 물에서 올라오실 때 하늘이 열리고, 성령이 그에게 임하며, 아버지의 음성을 들었다고 말한다. 그때 아주 단순한 질문이 머릿속에 떠올랐다. “예수님의 세례 때 하늘이 열렸다면, 그 전에 하늘은 닫혀 있었던 걸까?” 나는 말 그대로 운전대를 붙잡은 채 멈춰섰다. 하늘은 닫혀 있지 않았다! 예수님의 삶과 사역은 하늘에 열려 있었고, 하나님께 열려 있었다. 이것이 바로 예수님의 메시지가 하나님의 ‘좋은 소식’이라고 불리는 이유다. “하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔다” 혹은 마태복음에서는 “하늘나라가 가까이 왔다”라고도 한다. 이것이 그의 핵심 메시지였고, 가르침과 치유, 삶과 죽음, 부활을 통해 펼쳐졌다. 물론 그의 메시지는 사랑과 용서에 관한 것이지만, 그것은 하나님의 나라의 임재와 하나님의 본성에서 흘러나온 것이다.
그 단순한 질문은 복음서를 읽는 새로운 길을 열어주었다. 그때부터 성경은 놀라움으로 가득한 하나님의 나라를 선포하는 생생한 말씀으로 다가왔다. 예수님이 비유로 묘사하시고 삶으로 살아내신 그 나라는 기대를 넘어서는 방식으로, 예상치 못한 모습으로 다가온다.
그 경험은 내 단기 계획 성향이 하나님의 나라라는 내 통제를 벗어난 사건에 의해 압도되었음을 의미했다. 나는 “우리가 그 안에서 살고 움직이며 존재하는 그 분, 우리는 그의 자녀입니다”라는 말씀(행 17:28)이 얼마나 깊이 삶에 영향을 미치는지를 깨닫기 시작했다.

Zigs and Zags
I like to plan what I will do – how I will mow the lawn, drive to work, what I’ll do on the train. It is short term planning about how the day will pass. It is there in the mind’s eye before it happens. And mostly it is what occurs.
A few years ago I did a course that required assessing my life from a long term perspective. There was a practical exercise involved – make an art work of one’s life over the decades. What would I do? This task was new territory for me. As a builder’s son, I eventually worked out, I could use some wool on a fly screen to map out changes in my life’s direction. The thick wool was threaded along the fly wire in a straight line until a major change, when the line headed off in a new direction.
I was staggered to see a continuing zig and zag over the decades. It was obvious that most of the zags had come unexpectedly without planning. Something happened, rarely as a result of my planning, more often from left field. This rough make do sort of tapestry highlighted the change points and made me look more closely at the key events that had had such an effect on my life. It led to a time of re-orienting, re-newing, re-assessing- re-purposing, re-appraising. And it was as clear as day what the most significant one was! It came out of the blue, unexpected, and with it a new path to follow.
I remember it well. I was driving into the city thinking about Jesus baptism. The gospels declare that as Jesus came up out of the water the heavens were ripped open, the Spirit came upon him, and Jesus heard the Father speak. A simple question popped into my head. “If at Jesus baptism the heavens were torn open, when were they closed?” I was literally stopped in my tracks, hanging on to the steering wheel. The heavens were not closed!! His life and ministry were lived open to heaven, open to God. It is why Jesus message is what he said was God’s Good News. ‘The kingdom of God is at hand’, or as sometimes in Matthew ‘The kingdom of Heaven is at hand’. This is was his fundamental message spelt out in teaching, healing, living, dying and rising. Yes his message is about love and forgiveness but this flows from the reality of the presence of the kingdom of God and the nature of God.
That simple question opened a new way to read the Gospels From then on the scriptures came alive with the declaration of a kingdom that surprises, that is beyond expectations, and comes in unexpected ways as Jesus described in his parables, and lived out in life.
It meant for me that my predilection for short term planning had been outflanked by an event far beyond my control, the kingdom of God. I started to realise how profoundly life is impacted by “the One in whom we live and move and have our being – for we too are his offspring” (Acts 17:28).
