세계 어디에서나 기독교 교회는 그 여정을 재발견하고, 재평가하고, 재조정하는 과정에 있다. 크래머 박사는 기독교 신앙의 의사 소통이 어려운 이유와 타락을 통해 끊어진 인간의 의사 소통이 어떻게 회복 될 수 있는지 설명한다.
저자는 ‘communication between’과 ‘communication of’의 차이를 강조하면서 의사 소통의 기본 신학을 공교히 한다. 그는 메시지의 성격이 교회가 살아 가야하는 긴장감을 조성한다고 지적하면서 의사 소통을 역사적으로 취급한다. 교회가 문제에 더 많이 관심을 가질 수록 더 건강해지며, 의사 소통과 관련된 심리적, 사회학적, 문화적 요인에 대해 논의하고, 그 문제를 분석하고, 그것을 극복하는 데 어려움이 부분적으로는 해결할 수 있다는 가정에 기인한다고 제안한다.
언어와 방법, 커뮤니케이션 문제는 서양 문화의 연대가 무너지자 생긴 현대 문화의 특징이다.
크래머 박사는 의사 소통 회복의 주요 문제는 더 이해하기 쉬운 언어를 사용하거나 프로그램을 주요 필요로하는 것이 아니라고 강조한다. 교회는 자기 비판과 자기 성찰을 통해 본질에 대한 의식을 회복해야 한다.
‘Everywhere in the world . . . the Christian Church finds itself on the way to rediscovering, re-evaluating and restating its marching order, ‘ says the author in the opening lines of this discussion of the problem of communication in the Church. Kraemer explains why the communication of the Christian faith is difficult and how human communication, broken through the Fall, may be restored. The Author elaborates a fundamental theology of communication, stressing the difference between ‘communication between’ and ‘communication of’. He treats communication historically, pointing out that the character of the message creates a tension with which the Church has to live. The more the Church is concerned with the problem the healthier it becomes.He discusses the psychological, sociological, and cultural factors involved in communication, analysing its breakdown and suggesting that the difficulty in overcoming it is partly caused by assumptions that it can be solved by language and method. Communication problems are a feature of modern culture, due to the breakdown of the unity of Western culture. Kraemer stresses that the main issue in restoring communication is not that of using more intelligible language nor of devising programs as primary needs. It is that the Church, in self-criticism and self-examination, should recover consciousness of its true nature and calling and change its ways to reflect the truth that ‘judgement must begin at the house of God and not at the house of the world.
○ 저자소개 : 헨드릭 크래머 (Hendrik Kraemer, 1888 ~ 1965)
헨드릭 크래머 (Hendrik Kraemer, 1888년 5월 17일 ~ 1965년 11월 11일)는 네덜란드 출신의 세계적인 선교학자이자 철학자, 종교학자이다. 인도네시아어를 전공한 언어학자로서 인도네시아에서 사역했고, 그 후에는 라이덴 대학교의 종교학 교수로 봉직했다.
이슬람 문화에 정통한 선교학자일 뿐만 아니라 평신도 운동과 세계 에큐메니컬 운동의 대표자로서, 세계교회협의회 (WCC) 부설 기관인 에큐메니컬 연구소의 초대 소장으로 시무했다.
특히 2차 세계대전 후 조국 네덜란드 교회의 재건과 부흥에 크게 기여했는데, 1958년 출간된 ‘평신도 신학’은 그런 노력의 신학적 열매라고 할 수 있다. “평신도 신학”이란 용어는 이 책에서 유래한 것이다.
‘기독교 선교와 타종교’ (기독교문서선교연구회, 1993)를 발표함으로써 에큐메니컬 운동에 결정적인 영향을 주었다.
대표적인 저서로는 ‘The Communication of the Christian Faith’와 ‘Religion and the Christian Faith’, ‘World Cultures and World Religions: The Coming Dialogue’ 등 다수가 있다.
