Narara Ecovillage Open Day – THIS weekend! Sat Feb 22 9.30am-1pm
– By Scilla Sayer, on behalf of our amazing Open Day Working Group
Just in case this is not in your diary – our next Narara Ecovillage Open Day is on Saturday 22 February from 10am – 1pm. The 3-hour program offers the perfect first glimpse of our ecovillage, its purpose and plans.
- Registration will open soon after 9.30am.
- If you arrive early, you can grab a drink and sumptuous snack from our fabulous Coffee Cart before the site tours set off. This is also a good moment to pre-order a yummy ‘special’ for lunch – a good idea as they often run out.
- The official program kicks off at 10.00am when the first guided tour heads off through our stunning valley site.
- A midmorning presentation back at the Visitors Centre around 11.15am gives an overview of the vision, history, current projects and future dreams shared by members of Narara Ecovillage. There will be time for a few questions at the end of the presentation.
It is a time of much activity here at Narara and after the Open Day program finishes:
- Geoff’s Hemp House will be open (by donation) from 1-2pm.
- You can also experience Sociocracy in Action through an afternoon workshop on Decision-Making, from 2-4pm. Information is available in a separate article in this Network News edition.
Life at Narara Ecovillage is essentially all about people and the way we relate to one another. At the Open Day there are plenty of opportunities to meet members of all ages and diverse interests. Sharing conversations at the registration desk, in the queue for a coffee, at a stall, on the tour, or following the presentation can lead to delightful informal connections and perhaps the beginning – or deepening – of a sense of belonging to Narara Ecovillage.
As many visitors come with similar areas of interest, we have collated a list of Frequently Asked Questions on our Narara Ecovillage website. It is worth having a look at, either in advance or soon after your visit, if you are inspired by your visit.
If you have been to an Open Day before and this is a return visit, you can see just how far the building of Stage 1 homes has progressed.
Whatever your reason for coming, we look forward to welcoming you this Saturday or at any of the other Narara Ecovillage events open to visitors throughout this exciting year.

About the Sociocracy in Action Series
About sociocracy
Sociocracy provides simple but powerful tools that help people work together efficiently and effectively.
The Series
The workshop series starts with an introduction to effective decision making, followed by more in-depth sessions focussing on the elements of ‘picture-forming’, ‘proposal shaping’ and micro-facilitation skills.
Come to Any or Come to All
While these workshops can be taken as a course, each session is stand-alone, so you can come to any or all of them.
The Presenters
The series is presented by members of Narara Ecovillage Co-operative. We use sociocracy as our process for self governance, and believe it is fundamental to the success of our community and project. We want to share our learning with the wider community, and assist to develop these truly valuable skills.
- Workshops organised by Collective Know-How (education enterprise, Narara Ecovillage).
Sewing workshops at the village
This year we are offering a series of sewing workshops. Come along and learn a new skill, or make a start on your autumn sewing. Novices and experienced sewers alike are welcome, including children with a supervising adult. We have an adjacent playroom for those with smaller children.
Workshop 1: Pants! Sat Feb 29 2-4pm
Join experienced sewer Sharyn and learn how to make a pair of basic pants. You will learn how to cut out a pattern, sew an elastic waistband, hem, add reinforced knee patches, as well as add patch or side seam pockets. At the end of the workshop you will take home your completed garment. Why not make an Easter gift for a child, or the man/woman in your life?
- Date: Sat Feb 29, 2-4 pm
- Location: Narara Ecovillage Visitor Centre, 25 Research Road Narara
- Cost: $25 per workshop, $20 for NELN/NEV members. You can become a NELN member here: http://neln.org.au/

Mens boxer short sewing will be a later class. You will learn how to cut out and sew a pair of underpants including leg bands and waist band. The earth as peppercorn
Saturday March 21 is the International Day of the Forests and, more cosmically, the Autumn Equinox. That afternoon, Narara Ecovillage member John Seed will lead a walk from the village back gate into the Strickland State Forest Arboretum.
This will be a walk through the splendid Autumn bushland strewn with this year’s bunya nuts but it will also give us an opportunity to drop into the vast scale of the solar system.
John will be leading a process called “Earth as Peppercorn” which helps nourish our ecological identity as we construct a scale model of our solar system based on the Earth being the size of a single peppercorn. We will then walk from the Sun to Pluto reverently placing peppercorns and other appropriately sized objects as we learn to feel the scale of our Solar System home.
$15 family, $10 individual, proceeds to the protection of the threatened forests of NSW.
We’ll leave the Visitors Centre at 3.45 and the Village back gate at 4pm sharp. Return by 5.30 so that those who wish can participate in the…
Autumn Equinox Seasonal Gathering at the Narara Ecovillage campsite
- Come join us celebrating Autumn Equinox!
- Bring a plate to share. There will be plenty of pumpkins ????
- Please bring your own camp chair if you wish for one.
- 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
The Autumn Equinox is a great time to celebrate our ecological identity. It has been a feature of this planet for about 4,400 million years. At that time of Great Bombardment, comets and meteorites were pelting the Earth. Finally a Mars-sized body impacted the proto-Earth with such force that the whole mass became molten once more. The intruder plunged towards the centre of the Earth and the moon was born, popping out from the side opposite the impact. This also caused the Earth to tilt 23 degrees to the side, thenceforth giving rise to the seasons of the year. You are THAT!
