코카인 밀반입 한국인 호주 공항서 체포 [AFP보도자료 전문포함]
50대 한국인 남성이 7억원 상당 코카인을 호주로 밀반입하려다가 시드니 공항에서 붙잡혔다.
호주 연방 경찰 (AFP)은 10월 11일 (현지시간) 보도자료를 통해 국경수비대 (ABF)가 지난 8일 마약 밀반입 혐의로 한국인 A씨 (57)를 체포했다고 밝혔다.
A씨는 도쿄에서 시드니행 항공편을 이용해 시드니 공항에 도착했다.
호주 경찰은 짐 수색을 통해 A씨의 배낭과 책에서 약 7억원 상당의 코카인 2.5㎏을 발견했다.
A씨는 마약 밀반입 혐의로 재판에 넘겨졌고 지난 10일 법원에 출석했다. 보석은 받아들여지지 않았다.
호주 형법에 따르면 마약 밀반입 혐의에는 최대 종신형까지 선고될 수 있다.
호주 국경수비대 스톡웰 경사는 “불법 마약을 반입하려는 모든 사람은 수량과 관계없이 분명히 붙잡혀 법의 심판을 받게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
호주 경찰은 지난 8월 시드니 항구에서 대리석 안에 숨겨 들여오던 16억 호주달러, 1조 5천억 원 상당의 필로폰 1.8t을 적발하기도 했다.

○ Man charged with importing drugs into Australia
A 57-year-old Korean man appeared at Central Local Court on 10 October 2022 after he was arrested at Sydney Airport on Saturday (8 October 2022) for allegedly importing 2.5kg of cocaine. Bail was not applied for and was formally refused.
The man arrived on a flight from Tokyo and his luggage was the subject of an examination by the Australian Border Force (ABF). The ABF search allegedly found a white powdery substance in the man’s backpack and books.
Testing of the powder returned a positive presumptive result for cocaine – approximately 2.5 kilograms of cocaine was identified.
AFP members arrested the man and charged him with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.1(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.
AFP Sergeant Luke Stockwell said illicit drugs are destructive to our community and the AFP and partners will continue to work together at airports across the country.
“The community’s safety continues to be a top priority,” Sergeant Stockwell said.
“The message should be clear to anyone attempting to bring illicit drugs into Australia regardless of the quantity – you will be caught and you will face the full force of the law.”
ABF Superintendent Phillip Anderson praised both the dedication of ABF officers for detecting the cocaine at the border, and the ongoing close collaboration with the AFP.
“We are pleased to see this matter result in a charge. Together with our AFP counterparts, the ABF is committed to detecting and deterring illegal import attempts and protecting the Australian community from the scourge of illegal drugs,” Superintendent Anderson said.
