○ 생애 및 활동

1925년 뉴욕주 웨스트포인트에서 태어나 워싱턴 D.C.에서 유년기를 보냈다.

17세에 미 육군에 자원 입대했으며 19세에 준위가 되어 2차 대전 중 군수 물자를 수송하던 화물선에서 복무했다.

제2차 세계대전에 참전 이후 21세가 되던 1946년 첫 번째 소설인 <돌풍 : Williwaw>을 출간했다.

첫 소설 <윌리워>를 발표하고 소설, 시나리오, 희곡, 에세이 등 왕성한 창작 활동을 벌였다.

<제2 미국혁명>으로 American Book Critics에서 수여하는 상을 수상했으며 <미 합중국>으로 National Book Award를 수상했다.

정치에도 적극 참여했으며 뉴욕 주 북부 연방 하원의원, 민중당 공동대표, 캘리포니아 주 연방 상원의원 등을 지냈다.

이후 작가로서 60여년의 세월동안, <크리에이션 : Creation>을 비롯하여 <율리아누스 : Julian>, <링컨 : Lincoln> 등 수많은 소설과 희곡, 에세이들을 발표했다.

2012년 7월 31일 저녁, 캘리포니아 주 할리우드 힐스에 위치 한 자택에서 폐렴 합병증으로 작고하였다.

그의 부고가 알려지자, 뉴욕 타임즈는 지면을 통해 “그 어떤 작가도 고어 비달만큼 다재다능하지 못할 것이며, 그가 쌓아 올린 업적은 절대 따라갈 수 없을 것이다”고 발표하며 그의 죽음을 애도하였다.
