Get to know Jesus better!

20세기 중엽에 아더 번스는 미국 중앙은행의 총재였다.그는 또한 서독의 대사관과 그리고 아이젠하워에서 레이건까지 대통령들의 고문이기도 하였다. In the mid twentieth century, Arthur Burns was the chairman of the Federal Reserve of America. He was also an ambassador to West Germany and served as an advisor to presidents from Eisenhower to Reagan. 

그 당시에는 백악관에서 매달 직원들을 위한 기도 모임이 있곤 했다. 1977년 백악관 임직원들을 위한 한 조찬 기도회에서 번스는 기도로 그 모임을 마무리 해달라는 부탁을 받았다. There used be prayer gatherings for the staff at the White House every month during those years. At one prayer breakfast for the White House staff in 1977, Burns was asked to close the gathering in prayer. 

회원 대부분이 번스가 유대인 인것을 알고 있었기에 참석자들은 이 유대인이 어떻게 기도할 지 매우 궁금해했다. 심지어 어떤 이들은 서로를 쳐다 보며 눈섭을 치켜뜨기도 했다. Because most of the members knew that Burns was a Jew, they were all curious to see how this Jewish person would pray.  Some people even raised their eyebrows at each other. 

기도회가 폐할 무렵 번스는 주저함 없이 앞으로 나와서 다른 사람들과 손을 잡고 원을 그리며  섰다. 그리고 그는 이렇게 기도하기 시작했다. Toward the end of the prayer meeting, Burns came forward without a hesitation and held hands with the others in circle. And he began to pray like this. 

. “주여, 유대인들이 그리스도를 알게 되기를 기도합니다. 회교도들이 예수 그리스도를 알게 되기를 기도합니다.  주님, 세상 전체의 모든 그리스도인들이 예수 그리스도를 더 잘 알게 되기를 기도합니다. 아멘!   Lord, I pray that Jews will get to know Christ. I pray that Muslims will get to know Christ. Lord, I pray that all the Christians in the whole world will get to know Jesus Christ better.  Amen.” 

진정으로 우리가 누군가를 알기를 원할 때, 우리는 보통 무엇을 하는가?  가장 좋은 방법 중의 하나는 그 사람에 관해서 배우는 것이다.  우리는 그 의 말들과 관심사들과 그의 열정을 공부하려 할 것이다.  우리는 그가 어떻게 자신의 인생을 살았는지, 그리고 어떻게 죽었는지 알기를 원할 것이다. When we really want to know someone, what do we normally do?   One of the best ways would be to learn about him. We would study his words and interests and his passion. We would want to know how he lived his life and how he died. 

우리는 그 사람과 가까이 있으려 할 것이고 그를 향한 우리의 애정은 계속해서 점점더 깊어갈 것이다. 그리고 결국에는 우리가 그와 같이 닮을 것이다. 그리고 사람들이 비로서 우리를 그분의 제자라고 부를 것이다. We will try to stay close to him and our love for him will continue to grow deeper and deeper. And eventually we will become like him.  And then people will call us ‘His disciples’. 

이것이 우리의 미션이며 우리의 운명이다. This is our mission and our destiny.
