혼란한 세상과 샬롬
30년 전과 비교해 보면 우리는 여러 측면에서 훨씬 더 편리하고 풍요로운 시대를 사는 듯 보인다. 기술은 발전했고, 의료는 좋아져 100세 시대를 넘어 120세 시대를 맞이하고 있으며 삶의 속도와 선택의 폭도 이전보다 크게 넓어졌다. 겉으로 보기에는 모든 것이 더 나아지고, 더 안전하고, 더 풍족해진 것처럼 느껴진다. 그러나 역설적으로, 전 세계는 지금 그 어느 때보다도 여러 방향에서 동시에 거대한 흔들림을 경험하고 있다. 강대국들 사이에서는 헤게모니를 차지하기 위한 치열한 경제· 군사 경쟁이 계속됨으로 전쟁의 기운은 더 가까워졌고, 자연재해는 더욱 빈번하며, 뒤틀린 이념 갈등은 사람들을 서로 멀어지게 만들고 있다. 이 모든 상황을 통틀어 보면, 전 세계적인 불안의 기류가 사람들의 마음 깊숙이 스며들고 있다는 사실을 발견하게 된다.
전쟁은 두려움을, 자연재해는 무력감을, 이념 갈등은 분노를, 경제 위기는 빈부의 격차를 심화시켜 불안과 피로를 가져다준다. 결과적으로 사람들의 마음속에 평안을 빼앗는 흐름이 집요하게 작동하고 있다는 사실을 느낄 수 있다. 눈앞의 정보와 뉴스는 계속해서 우리를 자극하고, 불안과 공포는 천천히 마음의 중심을 잠식하며, 서로에 대한 신뢰는 약해지고, 결국 우리의 영혼은 하나님께서 주시는 샬롬의 영성을 잃어버린 채 살아가도록 유도되고 있는 현실에 살아가고 있다. 세상은 지금 혼란의 영이 만들어내는 깊은 동요와 흔들림의 소용돌이에 빠져 있다. 너무 많은 소리, 너무 빠른 변화, 너무 거센 감정들이 우리를 앞으로 밀어붙이며, 마치 잠시라도 멈추면 뒤처질 것 같은 압박 속에서 우리는 더 불안해지고 더 예민해지고 더 상실감을 느끼게 된다. 바로 이런 때일수록, 성경이 말하는 ‘샬롬(שָׁלוֹם)’,흔들리지 않는 평안, 하나님 안에서만 누릴 수 있는 온전한 안식이 절실히 필요한 시대이다.
평안이 무엇인지를 가장 잘 그려낸 작품이 하나 있다. 커다란 폭포 아래, 엄청난 물줄기가 쏟아져 내리며 귀를 찢을 듯한 소리가 온 주변을 뒤흔들고 있는 장면이다. 폭포의 물안개는 사방으로 튀어 오르고, 그 거대한 힘은 누구의 마음이라도 압도하여 불안하게 만들 만한 요동치는 소리를 낸다. 그런데 그 폭포 바로 옆 자작나무 숲속 작은 틈에 작은 새 한 마리가 조용히 둥지를 틀고 앉아 있다. 폭포의 굉음에도, 요동치는 물줄기에도, 그 새는 놀라거나 흔들리지 않고 고요하게, 마치 모든 것이 평온하다는 듯 앉아 있다. 예술가는 이 모습을 참된 평안이라 이름 붙였다. 평안은 소음이 없는 곳에서 얻어지는 조용함이 아니다. 요동치고 흔들리는 환경 속에서도 마음의 중심이 무너지지 않는 상태이다. 이것이 주님이 말씀하신 평안의 특징이다.
평안은 모든 문제가 잘 진행되어 생기는 감정이 아니라, 반대로 환경이 요란하고 흔들려도 내가 무너지지 않도록 붙잡아 주시는 하나님의 내적 능력이다. 평안은 외부 상황이 아니라 내 안에 계신 주님에게서 오는 영적인 힘이며, 폭포 아래의 작은 새처럼 요동하는 세상 한가운데서도 흔들리지 않게 하는 영혼의 안정성이다.

예수님은 십자가를 앞둔 마지막 밤, 두려움과 혼란 속에 있던 제자들에게 뜻밖의 말씀을 남기셨다. “평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라.”(요 14:27). 이 말씀은 단순히 눈물 닦아 주는 위로나, 흔들린 마음을 잠시 달래기 위한 말이 아니었다. 예수님은 지금 제자들에게 자신의 평안을 넘겨주겠다고 선언하신 것이다. 그분이 품고 계셨던, 십자가를 향해 걸어가면서도 흔들리지 않던 그 평안—그 평안을 이제 제자들의 마음속으로 옮겨 놓겠다고 하신 것이다.
평안은 예수님 ‘안에’ 있는 실재이다. 교부 어거스틴 (Aurelius Augustinus, (AD 354년-430)은 “우리의 마음은 당신 안에서 안식할 때까지 평안을 얻지 못합니다.” 신학자 칼 바르트(Karl Barth, 1886-1968)는 “그리스도의 평강은 상황을 없애 버리는 능력이 아니라 그 상황 속에서도 이길 수 있게 하는 힘이다.” 우리 마음이 흔들리는 이유는 환경이 거칠기 때문이 아니라, 마음의 중심을 붙잡아 줄 평강의 근원이 되시는 예수님이 없기 때문이다.
평안은 세상이 만들어낼 수 있는 감정이 아니다. 그리스도 안에 있을 때만 가능한 존재의 안정성이며 영혼의 집이 안전하게 자리 잡는 경험이다. 예수님이 주시는 평안은 세상이 주는 잠깐의 고요가 아니라, 예수님 자신에게서 흘러나오는 본질적 평안이다. 이런 평안은 세상에서 얻을 수 없는 평안이다.
세상이 주는 평안은 조건적이다. 상황이 좋아야 평안하고, 내가 원하는 대로 되어야 마음이 놓인다. 그러나 상황이 역전되면 그 평안은 금세 사라져 버린다. 그러나 예수님의 평안은 다르다. 예수님이 십자가를 향해 나아가는 그 길에서 조차 흔들리지 않으셨던 이유는 그분 안에 이미 하나님으로부터 온 샬롬이 존재했기 때문이다. 평안은 예수님 안에 있고, 예수님으로부터 오며, 예수님 안에 머무르는 자에게만 주어지는 하나님의 선물이다.

A Turbulent World and the Shalom of God
Compared to thirty years ago, we seem to be living in a far more convenient and prosperous era. Technology has advanced, medicine has developed to the point where we now speak not only of a “century of life” but even of a 120-year lifespan, and the pace of life along with the range of choices has greatly expanded. On the surface, everything appears better—safer, richer, and more abundant. Yet paradoxically, the world today is experiencing unprecedented instability from multiple directions at the same time. Intense economic and military competition among global powers has brought the threat of war closer. Natural disasters occur with greater frequency, and distorted ideological conflicts are driving people further apart. Taken together, these realities reveal a disturbing truth: a deep current of global anxiety is steadily seeping into the human soul.
War produces fear; natural disasters create helplessness; ideological conflicts fuel anger; and economic instability deepens social inequality, burdening people with fatigue and insecurity. As a result, we can clearly sense a persistent force working to steal peace from the hearts of individuals. News and information constantly stimulate us, fear and anxiety gradually invade the core of our hearts, trust between people weakens, and ultimately, our souls are being drawn into a reality where we lose the shalom that God intends for us. The world is now engulfed in a vortex of confusion created by what Scripture calls the spirit of chaos. Too many voices, too rapid changes, and emotions that surge like tidal waves push us forward relentlessly. We live under the pressure that if we pause for even a moment, we will fall behind. In such an atmosphere, we become increasingly anxious, sensitive, and weary.
It is precisely in such a time that we desperately need the biblical shalom (שָׁלוֹם)—an unshakable peace, the wholeness and rest that can be found only in God. One artwork captures the nature of this peace with remarkable clarity. In the painting, a massive waterfall crashes with thunderous force, shaking the entire landscape. The spray rises like mist, and the deafening sound is enough to unsettle even the strongest heart. Yet, tucked into a crevice among the birch trees beside the waterfall, a small bird quietly rests in its nest. Despite the roar and the trembling waters, the bird sits calmly, as though nothing could disturb its peace.
The artist titled the piece “Peace.” This is because true peace is not found in the absence of noise or trouble. It is the state of a heart that remains unshaken despite the turbulence around it. This is precisely the kind of peace Jesus spoke of. Peace is not a feeling that arises when everything is going well; it is the inner strength God gives so that we do not collapse even when circumstances shake violently around us. True peace is not produced by external conditions—it is a spiritual power that comes from the Lord dwelling within us. Like the small bird resting beneath the roaring waterfall, peace is the stability of the soul that remains steadfast in the midst of a chaotic world.
On the night before the crucifixion, Jesus spoke an unexpected word to His fearful and confused disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”(John 14:27) This was not a mere word of comfort, nor a temporary reassurance. Jesus was declaring that He would give His own peace—the very peace that kept Him steadfast even as He walked toward the cross. He would place this peace inside the hearts of His disciples. Peace is not an abstract concept. It is a reality that exists in Christ Himself.
The Church Father Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus, AD 354–430) expressed this profound truth: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Swiss theologian Karl Barth (1886–1968) likewise stated:“The peace of Christ is not the power to remove circumstances, but the power to overcome them.” The reason our hearts tremble is not because the world is turbulent, but because we lack the presence of the One who steadies the heart. Peace is not an emotion the world can manufacture. It is the stability of being that is possible only when we are in Christ—the experience of the soul finding its true home and resting securely.The peace Jesus gives is not a fleeting calm; it is an essential peace that flows from His very being. Such peace cannot be found in the world. The peace the world gives is conditional—dependent on favorable circumstances, on things going our way. But when circumstances shift, that peace quickly collapses. The peace of Jesus is entirely different. The reason Jesus was not shaken even as He walked toward the cross is that the shalom of God fully dwelt within Him. Peace is in Christ, comes from Christ, and is given only to those who remain in Christ. It is God’s gift to His children.
