‘하나님께 속한 것은 하나님께 바쳐라’
‘Give to God what belong to God’
“선생이여, 황제에게 세금을 내는 것이 옳은가요, 옳지 않은가요?” 예수님은 다음과 같은 요청으로 답변을 대신하셨다. “세금으로 사용하는 동전을 보여다오.”
어떤 사람이 동전 한 개를 주께 건넸다. “Teacher, is it right to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” Jesus responded with a request.” “Show me the coin used for the tax,” Someone handed Jesus a coin.
동전 위에는 로마 황제의 두상(頭像)이 새겨져 있었다. 그리고 이렇게 적혀 있었다. ‘로마의 황제, 시저 티베리우스.’ The coin had an image of the Roman Emperor’s head on it, and it said, “Tiberius Caesar, the Roman emperor”.
예수께서 다시 말씀하셨다. “황제의 것은 황제에게 바쳐고 하나님의 것은 하나님께 바쳐라.” Jesus said again, “Give to the emperor what belongs to him and give to God what belongs to God.”
‘하나님께 것 (속한 것)이란 무슨 말인가? 그것은 세상일까? 전 우주를 의미하는가? 다 맞는 대답이다. What does it mean by ‘what belongs to God’? Is it this world? Is it the whole universe? They all are right answers.
바리새인들은 자신들이 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었다는 것을 잘 알고 있었다. ‘자신들은 하나님의 소유’라는 의미다. 그것은 또한 자신들이 ‘하나님의 동전’이라는 뜻도 된다. The Pharisees knew very well that ‘they themselves had been created in the image of God’. It means that ‘they belonged to God. It also means that they were ‘God’s coins’.
마찬가지로, 우리가 하나님의 동전이라고 말하면 좀 지나친 표현일까? 예수님의 결론을 다시 생각해보자. ‘하나님께 속한 것은 하나님께 바쳐라’ Likewise, is it too much to say that we all are the coins of God? Let us reflect on Jesus’ conclusion: ‘Give to God what belongs to God.’
하나님은 우리를 갖기를 원하시는데 우리가 당신의 ‘소유’이기 때문이 아니라, 당신의 ‘자녀’이기 때문이다. God wants to own us, not because we are His possession but because we are His children.
모든 인간은 그 분의 형상으로 창조되었다. 우리는 모두 하나님의 동전이다. 우리는 그분의 것이다. All humans were created in His Image. We are all His coins. We belong to Him.
