야힘 토폴은 1989년 무혈 혁명 이래 나타난 가장 용감하고 가장 활동적인 체코 작가 중 한 명이다.

극작가 요제프 토폴의 아들이자 록밴드 ‘시보자치 (Psi Vojaci)’의 리더 필립의 동생인 토폴은 77헌장의 최연소 서명자였다.

성인이 된 이래 줄곧 정치적, 예술적 지하 활동에 헌신했다.

○ 생애 및 활동

야힘 토폴은 프라하의 유명한 문학가 집안에 태어났다.
아버지는 유명한 극작가인 요세프 토폴 (Josef Topol)이며 할아버지는 가톨릭 작가인 카렐 슐츠 (Karel Schulz)이다.
그는 아버지가 공산 정권에 저항했다는 이유 때문에 대학에 입학 허가를 받지 못하고 김나지움을 졸업한 후에 건설 노동자, 석탄 운반 등의 일을 했다. 1977년에는 15세의 나이에 77 헌장에 서명을 하여 최연소 참여자가 되기도 하였다.
’77 헌장’은 1977년 1월 체코슬로바키아의 전 (前) 외상 이르지 하예크와 『2000어 선언』의 집필자인 루드비크 바클리크를 포함한 240여 명의 지식인이 서명하고 발표한 헌장으로 인권 존중과 헬싱키 선언 준수 등을 요구하는 내용이다.

철학자이자 시인인 에곤 본디, 극작가이자 당시 저항 운동의 리더 중 하나였던 바츨라프 하벨, 시인이자 락 그룹 리더인 이반 마르틴 이로우스 (Ivan Martin Jirous) 등과 가까이 지냈다.
1989년 벨벳 혁명 당시에는 독립 신문인 Informacní servis (정보 서비스)를 편집, 발행하는 등 주도적인 활동을 하였다.

1988년 비공식적으로 발간된 시 작품에 주는 상인 톰 스토파드 (Tom Stoppard) 상을 수상하였고, 해마다 가장 흥미로운 작품에 주어지는 상인 에곤 호스토프스키 (Egon Hostovský) 상을 수상하였다.

• 작품 ‘자매’

체코의 구어체를 충분히 활용한 최초의 문학 작품 중 하나로 꼽히는 『자매』는 소련 점령기에는 탄압의 대상이었던 속어나 외설스러운 언어로 넘치고 있다. 『자매』는 현대 체코의 상상력의 독립 선언이라 할 수 있는 작품이다.

이 소설은 혁명의 초기 단계, 한 동독 망명객이 프라하에서 탈출하는 이야기로 시작하여 중심 화자 ―고독한 시적 영혼의 소유자로 새 시대의 혼돈 속에서 한몫 잡아보려는, 범죄자에 가까운 일당의 덫에 걸린 포토크― 를 지정한다. 그러나 이때부터 시간이 “폭발”하기 시작한다.

『자매』는 유럽사를 가로지르는 환상적인 여행으로, 술에 취해 단축된 사회적 리얼리즘과 뉴스 이벤트, 물불을 가리지 않는 몽상의 시퀀스, 그리고 이국적인 신화의 문장들 사이를 오간다.

이 작품은 체코의 문화에 대한 배경지식이 없는 독자에게는 상당히 어렵지만, 혁명 후 시대의 예리한 도덕적, 사회적, 정치적, 경제적, 언어적, 종교적 불확실성을 반영하고 있다.

그러나 포토크가 그의 “자매” 혹은 소울메이트를 찾아 헤매면서 감동적인 러브 스토리가 이러한 흐름과 나란히 달린다.

아름답고, 혼란스럽고, 독창적인 소설이다.

○ 수상

Topol has won numerous literary prizes, including the Tom Stoppard Prize, the Vilenica Prize for contributions to Central European literature, the Jaroslav Seifert Prize, and the Czech State Award for Literature for and for lifetime achievement. “The Devil’s Workshop,” translated to English by Alex Zucker, won the 2013 English PEN Award for Writing in Translation.

His acclaim has reached beyond the borders of Czechia. Daniel Medin, writing for the Times Literary Supplement describes Topol’s 2009 book “The Devil’s Workshop,” which won the 2010 Jaroslav Seifert Prize:

“A miracle of compression, its scope greater than ought to be possible for a book of its length. It should help to cement Jáchym Topol’s reputation as one of the most original and compelling European voices at work today.”
