OUR DIGITAL PICK OF THE MONTH
THE BANQUET
by National Theater of Korea
The Banquet, comprising traditional dance repertories of Korean dance masters, contains the past and present of Korean dance. The piece set an unprecedented record for a Korean dance piece by selling out every show since its premiere, and its contemporary interpretation of tradition was highly acclaimed by both audiences and critics. Court dance that took place in Jongmyo ritual, Buddhist dance rituals like Barachum, and a collection of folk dance forms like Jangguchum are arranged with the changing of seasons. The banquet of dance unfolding on the white stage in five traditional colours will captivate your eyes, with the performance reaching its climax with new-Taepyeongmu (Dance of Peace), a piece which arranges 50 dancers on stage for a choreographic feat fit for a king.
