“나는 단지 예수님의 나귀일 뿐이요”
I am merely a Jesus’ donkey.
인도의 성자 선다 싱(1889-1929)은 전 세계의 수 많은 성도에 의해 지난 세기의 가장 강력한 복음전도자로 간주되고 있다. 그는 시크 종교의 일원으로 자라났다. 시크교는 힌두교의 한 종파로 주후 1500년 경 세워졌다. 시크교는 유일신을 믿고 카스트제도와 우상숭배를 거부한다. Sadhu Sundar Singh (1889-1929) is regarded by many Christians across the world as one of the most powerful evangelists in the last century. He was raised a member of the Sikh religion. Sikhism is a sect within Hinduism that was founded about 1500 A.D. Sikhism teaches belief in one god and rejects the caste system and idolatry.
어렸을 때에 선다 싱은 미국 장로교 선교회가 운영하는 초등학교에 다녔는데 그곳에서는 신약성경을 한 교제로 매일 읽고 있었다. 그는 이렇게 회상한다. “나는 성경잃기반을 좋아하지 않았다. 하지만, 다소 하나님의 사랑에 관한 복음이 나의 흥미를 끌었다. 여전히 그것이 사실이 아니라고 여기면서 말이다.” When he was a child, Sundar Singh attended a primary school run by the American Presbyterian Mission where the New Testament was read daily as a “textbook”. He recalled, “I didn’t enjoy the Bible reading class. To some extent, however, the Gospel on the love of God attracted me though I still thought it was false.”
1903년 12월 어느 늦은 밤, 그는 하나님이 정말 존재한다면 자신에게 그 모습을 나타나 달라고 기도했다. “그렇지 않으면, 나는 우리 집 옆을 지나는 기차 정면으로 뛰어들겠노라고” 생각하면서. 그는 그렇게 7시간 동안 기도하였으나 아무런 일도 일어나지 않았다. “하나님, 당신이 존재한다면 오늘 저녁 제게 모습을 드러내 주시옵소서.” 다음 기차가 아침 5시에 오기로 되어있었고 그 시간이 지났다. Late one night in December 1903, he prayed that God reveal himself to him if he really existed. “Otherwise — I am going to throw myself in front of the train 5passing by our house.” For seven hours he prayed but nothing happened. “O God, if there is a God, reveal thyself to me tonight.” The next train was due at five o’clock in the morning. The hours passed.
갑자기 방이 빛으로 가득 찼다. 누군가가 그 앞에 나타났다. 다음과 같은 소리가 들렸다. “얼마나 더 나를 부인하려고 하는가? 나는 너를 위해 죽었고 너를 위해 나의 생명을 주었다” 그 사람의 손이 보였고 못에 찔린 자국이 있었다. 그날 밤 선다 싱은 주께 자신의 삶을 드렸다. Suddenly the room filled with a glow. Someone appeared before him. A voice was heard like this, “How long will you deny me? I died for you; I have given my life for you.” He saw the man’s hands, pierced by nails. That night, Sunda Singh gave his life to the Lord.
오랜 세월이 지나 선다 싱이 유럽 순회를 마친 후 어떤 이가 이렇게 물었다. “사람들에게서 그렇게 많은 존경을 받는 것이 해가 되지 않나요?” 선다 싱은 이렇게 대답했다. “아닙니다. 나귀가 예루살렘에 입성하자 사람들이 나귀 앞에 겉옷과 종려나무 가지를 깔아놓았답니다. 하지만 나귀는 교만하지 않았지요. 그는 그것이 자신을 경외하기 위함이 아니라 자신의 등에 앉아 있는 예수님을 경외하기 위한 것을 알았어요. 사람들이 나를 칭송할 때에 나는 내가 아니라 주님이 일을 행하신다는 것을 압니다. ” Years had passed and after Sundar Singh had completed his tour around Europe, someone asked him, “Doesn’t it do harm, your getting so much honor?” Then Sundar Singh answered, “No. The donkey went into Jerusalem and they put their garments and palm branches on the ground before the donkey. But the donkey was not proud. He knew it was not done to honor him, but for Jesus, who was sitting on his back. When people honor me, I know it is not me, but the Lord, who does the Job.
