믿음
믿음이란 무엇인가?
지난 몇 주 동안 히브리서를 읽었다. 믿음에 대한 구체적인 설명이 11장과 12장에 나와 있다. 이러한 믿음의 관점은 21세기를 살아가는 많은 사람들에게 충격적으로 다가올 수 있다. 우리가 눈에 보이는 세상에만 집중하고, 보이지 않는 세상에 대한 주장에는 의심을 품기 때문이다. 하지만 히브리서 기자에게는 보이지 않는 것이 시작점이다.
“믿음은 바라는 것들의 실체요, 보이지 않는 것들의 증거이다.” (히브리서 11:1)
“믿음으로 모든 세상이 하나님의 말씀으로 지어졌으니, 보이는 것들이 보이지 않는 것들로 말미암아 된 줄을 우리가 안다.” (히브리서 11:3)
그리고 또 “믿음이 없이는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 수 없다. 하나님께 나아가는 자는 반드시 하나님이 계신 것과, 하나님이 자기를 찾는 자들에게 상 주시는 분임을 믿어야 한다.” (히브리서 11:6)
그러므로 믿음은 보이는 모든 것이 보이지 않는 하나님에게서 비롯되었다는 것을 깨닫는 것이다. 하나님은 우리가 하나님께 나아가기를 원하시고, 하나님으로서 우리 삶에 참여하시기를 기대하신다. 믿음은 우리 가운데 현존하시는 보이지 않는 하나님 앞에서 살아가는 것이다.
최근 뉴질랜드 퀸스타운에서 휴가를 보내던 중, 나는 보이지 않는 분이 어떻게 현존하시는지를 곰곰이 생각했다. 렌터카를 타고 40km를 달리며 경치를 감상하고 있었다. 그러다가 우리가 광활한 U자형 빙하 계곡을 따라 달리고 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 1km 높이의 계곡은 거의 수직에 가까웠고, U자형 계곡의 바닥은 1km 너비의 호수로 가득 차 있었다. (내가 예전에 지질학자였다는 사실에 놀라지 않을 수도 있다.) 도로가 있는 곳은 한때 1,000미터 두께의 빙하 얼음으로 덮여 있었던 곳이다. 나는 처음엔 언덕과 계곡을 바라보는 관광객이었다. 다음 순간에는 언덕과 계곡을 가르며 깎아지른 듯한 경외감으로 가득 찬 공간을 바라보며 과거 빙하의 바닥을 따라 운전하고 있었다. 얼음의 어마어마한 힘이다. 나는 그때까지 보이지 않았던 것을 마음의 눈으로 보았다.
히브리서에서 믿음은 보이지 않는 우주의 힘이자, 우리가 보고 아는 모든 것을 낳으신 하나님의 위엄에서 시작된다. 이 책은 부적절한 방식으로 하나님을 느끼고 응답한 사람들의 이야기를 들려준다.
그런 다음 예수 그리스도께서 오셨다. 그분은 보이지 않는 하나님의 임재 안에서 삶을 사셨고, 우리 가운데 이 하나님의 행하심을 나타내신 궁극적인 분이다. 그분은 보이지 않는 하나님의 임재 안에서 사셨기 때문에 믿음의 선구자라고 불린다. 그분은 우리 가운데 계신 하나님의 존재를 십자가에서 완성하고 성취하셨기 때문에 온전케 된 자라고 불린다.
골로새서 기자가 말했듯이, 예수님은 보이지 않는 하나님의 형상이자, 보이지 않는 하나님의 능력이자, 한 사람의 삶 속에서 창조에 대한 하나님의 목적을 보이게 하신 분이다.
중요한 것이 있다. 보이지 않는 하나님을 발견하는 데서 비롯되는 신앙의 재정립이다. 신앙은 나 자신과 내가 믿는 것에서 시작되는 것이 아니다. 우리 가운데 역사하시는 보이지 않는 하나님의 현존 안에 우리가 있음을 발견하는 것이다. 신앙은 우리가 누구인가가 아니라, 우리의 관점으로 포착되거나 제한될 수 없는 하나님의 실재 앞에서 우리가 어디에 있는가를 의미한다.

FAITH
What is your understanding of faith?
In the last few weeks I’ve been reading the book of Hebrews. A particular description of faith is spelled out in chapter 11 and 12. It is a view of faith that I sense jars many 21st century ears. I think it is because we focus on the visible world and are suspicious of any claims about invisible unseen worlds. Yet for this writer the unseen is the starting point.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hope for, the conviction of things not seen.(12:1)
“By faith we understand the worlds were prepared by the word of God so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.” (12:3) And again. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (12:6)
Faith then is the discovery that all that is seen is derived from the unseen God who wants us to approach God, and expects as God, to be involved in our life. Faith is to live before the unseen God who is present in our midst.
On a recent holiday at Queenstown in New Zealand I was mulling over how the unseen One is present. I was driving a rental car, admiring the scenery on a 40km trip. I recognised we were driving along a vast glacial U shaped valley, the kilometre high sides almost vertical, the bottom of the U filled by a lake a kilometre wide. (It might not surprise you that I was formerly a geologist!) Where the road is had once been covered by a thousand metres of glacial ice. At one moment I was a sight see-er looking at hills and valleys. The next I was driving along the bottom of a former glacier with an eerie awe-filled view of the space carved through the hills and valleys by the immense colossal power of the ice. I saw in my mind’s eye what had, until that moment, been unseen.
In the book of Hebrews faith starts with the majesty of the God who is the unseen cosmic power that gave birth to all we see and know, the God who wants to interact with this visible world. The book goes on to tell the stories of those who sensed and responded to God in inadequate ways.
But then comes one, Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate one who both lived life in the unseen presence of this God and gave expression to the actions of this God in our midst. He is called the pioneer of faith because he lived in the unseen presence of God and he is called the perfected of because he completed and fulfilled in a cross what God is about in our midst.
As the writer of the biblical book of Colossians states, Jesus is the image if the invisible God, the power of the unseen God, making visible God’s purposes for the creation in the life of one person.
There is a vital reorientation of faith here that flows from the discovery of the unseen God. Faith does not so much start from me and what I believe. It is finding that we are in the presence of the unseen God at work in our midst. It is not so much about who we are, but where we find ourselves – before the reality of a God who cannot be captured or limited by our point of view.
