보이지 않는 것을 보는 성탄절
우리는 호주의 사막에서 모닥불을 둘러싸고 앉아 있었다. 구름 한 점 없는 검은 밤하늘 위로 은하수가 갈라지듯 흐르고 있었다. 별들은 믿기지 않을 만큼 밝게 빛났다. 도시의 불빛에서 나오는 어떤 배경광도 없었다. 그때 한 친구가 나에게 물었다. “은하수 속의 이뮤를 본 적이 있나요?”
“무슨 말이야?” 내가 되물었다.
“별을 보지 말고, 그 사이의 어둠을 보세요.”
그래서 그대로 해 보았더니, 그 수많은 별들의 띠 사이에 거대한 검은색으로 달리는 이뮤 한 마리가 보였다. 나는 비로소 그것을 볼 수 있었다. 수천 년 동안 호주 원주민들이 보아 온 그 이뮤를 나도 본 것이다. 별빛이 어두운 이뮤의 형상을 둘러싸고 있었다. 한 번 보고 나니 다시는 못 본 척할 수 없었다.
2025년의 끝자락에 서서 나는 그때의 발견을 다시 떠올리게 된다. 우리가 기뻐하며 기념하는 이 크리스마스 이야기에도 그런 것이 있지 않을까? 우리가 잘 아는 그 이야기 안에, 아직 보지 못한 또 다른 이야기가 숨어 있는 것은 아닐까?
정부의 호적 조사 명령으로 남쪽 베들레헴으로 내려가야 했던 한 임신한 십 대 소녀와 그 약혼자. 해산할 때가 되었지만 머무를 방이 없어 밤이면 짐승들이 머무는 동굴 같은 곳에서 아이를 낳게 된다. 그 후, 그들은 갑작스러운 방문을 받는다. 들에 있던 목자들이었다. 그들은 어떤 환상 가운데 “베들레헴으로 가서 한 아기”를 찾으라는 말을 들었다고 한다. 조금 뒤에는 별을 연구하던 이들, 동방의 박사 세 사람이 동쪽에서 떠오른 새로운 별을 따라와, 그 별이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지 알아보려 한다. 이렇게 모든 이들이 한 자리에 모여 하나님의 아들의 탄생을 맞이하게 된다.
그렇다면, 여기에서 ‘달리는 이뮤’는 무엇일까?
우리가 이미 알고 있는 이야기들 속에는, 앞으로 이 아이에게서 펼쳐질 또 다른 이야기가 깊이 새겨져 있다. 이 아이의 이름은 임마누엘, 곧 “하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다”이다. 어떻게 이럴 수 있을까? 하나님은 우리와는 너무나도 다른, 멀리 계신 분, 우리 눈에 보이지 않는 분 아닌가? 그러나 하나님의 생각은 우리의 생각과 같지 않다. 그렇다면 여기서 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는 것일까?
숨겨진 이야기, 곧 ‘달리는 이뮤’는 바로 이것이다. 하나님께서 지금, 우리가 잘 아는 이 현실의 한복판에서 일하고 계시다는 사실이다. 찰스 웨슬리가 말했듯이, “우리 하나님이 한 뼘 길이로 줄어들어, 도무지 이해할 수 없을 만큼 사람이 되셨다.” 아기 예수는 우리 삶의 한복판에 임재하신 하나님의 표지가 된다. 이 아이 안에서 하나님은 자신의 권능과 위엄이 어떤 모습인지 보여 주신다. 마지막 날에만이 아니라 바로 지금, 이 역사 한가운데서 어떤 모습으로 우리 가운데 임하시는지를 드러내신다. 하나님의 길, 하나님과 피조세계 사이의 사랑의 이야기, 그 모든 것이 이 아기 예수 안에서 처음에는 연약함과 깨어지기 쉬운 모습으로 나타난다.
성탄 이야기의 환한 불빛은 실제로 그 안에 더 깊은 이야기를 품고 있다. 하나님은 여기 계시지만 눈에는 보이지 않는다. 그러나 인간적인 방식으로는 보이신다. 곧 영과 진리와 은혜가 인간의 역사 속에서, 그리고 우리의 삶 속에서 일하고 있는 모습으로 나타나신다. 한 번 이렇게 보게 되면, 이 하나님은 다시는 못 본 척할 수 없다.

Seeing the Unseen this Christmas
We were gathered around the campfire in an Australian desert. The cloudless black night sky overhead was riven with the light of the Milky Way. The stars were so bright. There was no background glow from city lights. A friend asked me, had I been shown the emu in the Milky Way. “What do you mean,” I said? “Don’t look at the stars but the darkness between them.” I did and there it was within that vast band of stars, a giant black running emu. I could see it as aboriginal people have done for aeons. The light of the stars enclose the dark emu within them. Once seen it cannot be unseen.
As we come to the end of 2025 I am reminded of that discovery. Is there more to the Christmas story that we celebrate? Is there another story hidden here in the story that we know? The pregnant teenager with her partner on the road south to Bethlehem at the order of a government census. The time to give birth comes but there was no place but a cave to share with the animals that spent the night there. Afterwards, they were surprised by the visit of shepherds. In a vision they were told to go to Bethlehem and find a newborn child. Later, three Maggi, readers of the stars, have followed a new star from the east and come to find out what it meant. All brought together in the coming of the birth of the Son of God.
What is the running emu here?
The known stories have embedded within them the story that will unfold in this child. This child is called Emmanuel “God with us”. How could this be? Isn’t God far beyond us, hidden from us? But God’s ways are not our ways, so what is happening here? The hidden story, the running emu, is that God is working here and now in the midst of what we know. ‘Our God contracted to a span, incomprehensibly made man’ as Charles Wesley put it. The child Jesus becomes the marker of God’s presence in the midst of life, showing what God‘s power and Majesty look like, not only what the end will be, but now in the midst of history. God’s ways, God’s love affair with creation here in the child Jesus, seen at first in weakness and frailty.
The bright lights of the Christmas Story really do enclose this profounder story. God is here unseen but seen in human terms – spirit, truth, grace at work in human history and our lives as well. Once seen, this God cannot be unseen.
